View Full Version : bone weldin'
today is the sixteenth day into my modified series,
I am back at work now so I only have a couple hours a day to work on it
so daily steps will be small steps.
today I welded up the rear wishbone, I had the whole thing all nice and tightly fit in order to tig weld it but was unhappy with the geometry of the drive line so I broke the tacks at the rear joints, rolled the pinion down and was left with some pretty good gaps at the bottom of the joints so I mig welded them and the front joints too. I also added gussets to both sides of all four joints to spread the weld area a little.
here's some after shots, you can deduce the process by viewing the end results.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Rear;
as soon as it's cooled off a little I'll throw it back together and post a pic of the much improved angles.

that's all for today..
to be continued!!

it's a 40 something truck center I got from Dave Seacrest at a local swap meet.
the olive drab paint on the snout and yoke is kinda curious..

Paul,
Your driveshaft looks A LOT safer now...
Ed
I set it up like a short ladder bar might be set,
pinion at a negative one degree, drive shaft level and tailshaft at about three..
carbs are leaning forward a degree or two.
this will change slightly as the car becomes loaded, with the front coming down a little more then the rear.

Paul,
Looks good.
Because an extra set of eyes is always worthwhile , thought I'd bring this up, it may just be the pics or a dirty line on the bone.
In the pic called "rear again" there looks to be a crack running from the right hand point of the triangle off to the right, you might want to take another look at it.
Just something that caught my eye, it may be nothing. That's what ya get when ya look at cracks in metal for a living, I start imagining cracks everywhere.
thanks Dreamweaver,
I'll deffinately take a look at that..
Paul
yup, it is a crack, almost imperceptible to the eye, without the flash it may have been missed.
if it aint one thing it's another http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
thanks again.

Your posts are awesome! Keep 'em coming. I think that I have learned more by reading your build posts than others in recent HAMB history.
Thanks 60!
I'm working towards the stearing, pedals and linkage.
I'll post more in a few days.
thanks again,
Paul
