Rear shot...

...and in its most recent incarnation... it is all orange (frame included) with a white wall rear tire.

The bike appears to use the front half of a swing arm frame with the rear half of a rigid frame... I just want to know if the two are compatable (front swing arm frame w/rear rigid section).

Originally, the swing arm frames had a center tube that went behind the tranny... and the original rigid frames had the center tube that went in-between the motor and trans.

I have a swing arm frame that I want to rigidize with an original hard tail rear section... I know there may be some fabrication to it... (at least I hope so) I just want to know if this is what this gent did.

Thanks guys,
Sam.

That.... is one of the coolest Triumphs ever!

There were pics of it with the orange frame and fender in a thread on here a while ago... And I think, that they mentioned an owners name too.
Don't know what the name of the thread was anymore though... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The oil tank, battery tray, and rear engine plates mount to the seat tube, (down tube), it's there.

I like the first incarnation better. More businesslike.

Yep.

Notice how it is behind the motor?

That designates (as I am told) that it is an original swing arm front half.

Here's one with the tube in front of the trans...

Looks like a swingin' arm cradle with an aftermarket hardtail. Doesn't mean that an original hardtail can't be mated to a swing arm cradle though. Just a minor redesign and a gusset or two and you should be there.

SamIyam

Porknbeaner...

I sorta think it is an original hard tail... if you look real close, you can see the cast ends that attach right below the seat... the ends that hold the rear tire look factory too with the fender lump and the bridge looking thing that is verticle... and the lower rails look to be one piece all the way up to the front... here's a factory one to compare.
Sam.

I think you're right Sam...from comparing the pictures.

It seems that mating the two together would be fairly simple.

sam, I am almost positive it will work... that black bike I almost bought was set up like that. It makes for a short bike, you use the primary from the swingarm setup, which is shorter.

all this is for preunit... I thought you had a unit setup?
questions like this seem to go over well at Britbike.com if you have not been there... but the board is SLOW

Bass

That Britbike board is so slow you can check in once a month and not really miss anything. There is some good info there, however.

Sam, you're going to have to do a bit of cutting and welding already to mate the unit motor to the pre-unit front section, so you might as well go ahead and use the early rigid tailsection if that's the look you're after. It's going to take some time to get it all put together properly, but I think it'll be worth it.

Not trying to be critical, but you probably could have started with a unit front section and an early pre-unit hardtail and saved yourself some time. The neck and top tubes look pretty much identical.

I like the concept, though...it's going to be a cool foundation for the bike.

Gregg, I'm building sort of a bastard... it's a unit motor in a pre-unit frame. If you have ever seen Keith Weesner's poster "Custom Sickles"... you'll know where I got my inspiration. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Only I didn't want the fuss/cost/issues that are sometime's associated with the pre-unit motors and trans' (i.e. I got this unit motor and parts from a friend in a trade).

Said friend is a Brit bike mechanic... and primarily deals with unit stuff... which will help in the long run.

As far as the choice of the frame goes... Brian is right, they are very, very similar... but that first down tube (I don't know the correct name of it) is a little more vertical in the early frame... and I believe it, along with the pre-unit forks, tuck the tire in a little closer. I also wanted the spindley lower rail mounts up front.

I've even copied the ball tank that is seen on the Weesner drawing. Without giving too much away... it alone will make you drool. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As many of the Triumph guys on here know... I've been struggling with the rear tire size for the bike... but have been encouraged by one particular gentleman to forge on with what I feel will look right.

I don't want to sound too secretive... it's just that I only have a few parts made and a whole lot of shit torn apart. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When I get the bike mocked-up(TM), I'll post pics so you all can see how close it looks to the drawing. (sans pre-unit motor).

Anyone want to pic the color out for me??

Sam.

So are you going with the 18" on the rear or not?

I can't wait to see the oil tank. I bought an almost new round (cylindrical) oil tank for my Triumph at the swap meet this weekend. Haven't decided if I want to go through the trouble of changing it yet.

As far as color goes...do you want loud or subtle?

Django

I don't want to hijack the post, but how would you guys suggest building one of these bikes with a passenger seat and still retain the look? I don't think my g/f would go for one of those suction cup seat on the fender deals.

SamIyam
05-03-2004, 05:58 PM
Looks like I'll be going with the 18" rear... and as for paint is concerned... I want WILD... Gold flake has been done too much as of late... so I'm thinking light green flake or light purple... maybe even blue.

And the only good looking seat (for two) for one of these bikes is referred to as the "King and Queen" (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7900553509&catego ry=35566&sspagename=WDVW) seat...

I just so happen to have one that I'll sell you! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
(not the one on e-bay)

SamIyam
05-03-2004, 06:07 PM
Ok, so I'm kidding about the seat...

There is one however, that is like a bates seat... but then goes back over the fender... I'm not sure that ANY lady would ever want to ride on the back of one of these things... and for me, the solo seat is an intregal part of the look of the bike.
Sam.

Django
05-03-2004, 06:14 PM
True, the solo seat makes the bike. But my g/f only rides with me on my Ducati if she has too. I am thinking about a second bike that will be more g/f friendly, and you guys keep posting these pics of bad ass triumphs, and well, frankly I'm hooked...

I have a small removable seat pad on the rear fender. The only one willing to ride with me is my 10 year old kid. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I dont thing its possible to make a comfortable AND good looking passenger seat on a rigid trump rear fender.
The pad is partly hidden by the helmet in this pic.

Sam...here's a shot of the '56/'70 hybrid I was building in the mid 80's. It used a '70 Bonneville engine and a '56 frame. The frame used a factory rigid rear section mated to a swingarm front. Worked great for the unit engine. I'll see if I have any other pics of it for you.

Hi donnie!
When are you going to post that crazy video you shot up in Modesto a couple monts ago??? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Allan, I like what you had going!

Did you leave the engine backward in the frame? (the pre-unit lower rails mount the engine back about an inch)

I'm thinking I'm going to move that lower mount forward an inch.

Got any more pics?

Also, how did you mount the center tube to the lower rails? I take it that it wasn't a "bolt in".
Sam.

Colours?
Here are two 'clips' of a photochopped Mai ki EK.
The colour combinations are both awsome, although I'm biased on the soft purple (heavy flake all round of course http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Cheers,

Drewfus
05-03-2004, 11:05 PM
And final, My favourite purple flake of all time, on "Kustom55's" Chev.......

Note: all o the above colour swatches would work great with the white trim, as well as the chromework.......something to consider http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Cheers,

Drewfus

Thanks, Sam! I sure regret selling that beast. I never finished it. I'd like to try and duplicate it with the 650 Yamaha I currently have.

I'll have to dig through some boxes to see if I have any more shots of the bike. I was into "old school" bikes before they were called old school! LOL

We never got the engine mounts completely finished, but I know that the unit engine dropped right into the frame.

Rick sent me a couple shots of the digger... but true, I'd like to see the ones he did of the midget...

That car, with Ricks pics, deserves a spot in TRJ... with all it's history and all being that well documented.

Thanks v8Minor!!!

That helps a lot!

Incidentally, I won the auction on the maroon frame pictured... seems the price shot up a tad after I posted this (hmmmmm, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif ) but when you snipe stuff... you rarely loose. (A friend did it for me... had to keep this purchase "under radar")

Anywho, it looks as though he shortened the frame at a point that allowed him to lower the bike a tad... once I get it here... I'll dope it out and post pics...

Thanks again guys!

Sam.
