I have heard lots of things lately on firewall
recesses. From Little red wagons to Wheel barrows.
What have you done?

My TurfMaster 2000 gave it's life for my firewall, the back
radius was perfect, I had to widen it 3".
I used the front portion with a little more work for a
transmission tunnel.
I'll find a pic tonight to post.

Here is a Speed Center firewall I adapted to my T. Yes, I am using a supe flat tranny to fit under it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

my old sled..
I used the front corners of a cheap home-depot wheel barrow for the firewall on my old f-100. It worked out pretty well.

I did the wheel barrow thing on my 49 F1 which I put a Ford 390 in. Worked pretty good.
Heres what I did in the 35 PU. Its on Fat Cats site, which you can get to by going here in his Tech Section.

The measurements on the bowtie are setup so the big block will sit back into it nicely, will need to cut the trans tunnel still once we get it all mocked up and figure out how much we have to cut.
It's been done a couple years, a sheetmetal worker buddy of mine did the work as I didn't have the necc. tools or know how to do it back then.. (Still don't)

trimmed 5" and tunneled another 5" for 10" total recess..
used 1/4" aluminum plate for firewall.

Anybody used pieces from a 50 Gallon Drum, I've got one sitting out at the farm next to my other project and was thinking it could make a slick setback, Haven't started hacking on it yet, gotta go dump it in the ditch first.

I dig when the entire firewall is pushed in and only a slight edge remains. its a nice clean look rather then just a square hole.. thou I have seen some nice examples of those also.

Anyone have pictures of a 30 or 31 ford stock firewall reversed to gain additional space. The question is whether I could get enough space for a SBC. I know I would have to trim for the tranny. I am not sure how the bottom near the toe board would work or look. Car is a 31 coupe on 32 rails, with rear wheelwells centered on stock 106 inch wheelbase.

If you can see it clear enough I have reversed another 31 firewall behind the original looks ok and finished up well

on mine I cut the orig firewallout, left bout an inch all the way around, bent up some metal, formed it to the radius of the cowl, welded it in, voila, no body work needed...Toqwik

Bob, what are you doing for w/wipers on the 52 ?
I am working on a 53 and love your firewall .......
Here's the standard Brookville 4" recess.
As you can see it's not quite big enough for the 455 Buicks so it gets widened a bit.
You guys ought to go to DRD57's site and read his step by step on a wheelbarrow firewall on his SBC powered coupe.
The wheelbarrow firewall is about three times classier than the simple recess on my 31.

How did that work out with the big block? Did you have to make it wider

I am using a old refigerator door, the old style like from the sixty works best. Sorry no pictures. They are the right size, have nice raduis, and look cool, also most of the time you can score one for free!! I you are real lucky you can get an old style that mat have a detal punched in it that will look nice on the inside of the car. This is a trick I learned from some old builders, they told me back in the sixtys they used to get all they could for all of there rides, check out the firewalls on some old rods, you will see some.

Eric, the wheelbarrow worked fine with the big block in Emilio's car, there's room to spare. Thanks for the idea, it worked great and saved some money. You'll have to come out and check it out sometime.
