anyone know what the little toggle switch is under the dash below the light switch is for on a 49 f1? seems to be a factory job since both my trucks got them, but neither runs and its been puzzling me for some time, and I can find no reference to it in the service manual

follow the wires..

I've had a couple of those trucks but it's been at least 22 years, memory fades..

I want to say heater but I'm not gunna, sounds stupid..

where's old beet, he's prolly been driving them every day since they were new http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

On the 49-50 passenger cars, the little toggle is to turn off the insturment lights.

I don't see any wires to the engine compartment that deadend and I tried to follw the wires but it just goes into a big batch of them wrapped up and I didn't want to open that mess of wires just yet til at least I get to have a spin in the truck in the next month hopefully, and in the parts truck the wireing is pretty much hanging from the dash not hooked to anything

I was just curious is all, thought maybe it was some secret switch to get power to the coil or something

Don't know about the F-1 but on my 55 Safari there is a toggle switch under the dash(factory)that turns the lower interior lights(footwell)on separately from the upper ones mounted on the B pillars. They have a switch on the left B pillar and on the right rear panel next to the tailgate.Sounds like a light switch to me.

Maybe for an overdrive? Some Borg Warner R-10 OD's could have that.

All these guesses are very clever, but based on over 30 years of owning Clarence, trust me, it's an on/off switch for the dash lights.

Atch nailed it - the instrument cluster light switch. Powered from the main light switch (right rear post looking down from on top) by a Bl/R wire and two Bl/R wires come off the other side and go the the two dash lights - one over the speedometer and the other in the middle of the 4 gauges
