Pinch bolt on the end of the shaft where it meets the box?
Checked to ensure there's no bolts where the floor/firewall meet the column?
Only suggestions, as I am not familiar with the car.
Hope this helps...
Dave

The column slides off the SHAFT,,,

You have to pull the box to get the shaft out or else pull apart the box. Shaft is one piece that goes into the box

ok schooled my self ,i cut the streering shaft about 4'' up from the gear box.theres enough room there now to drill a hole and let the shaft from the new column slide over the old shaft ,run a bolt through it and then mount the column to the dash.i packed some grease in the box sence its not sealed now .ill use a old shock boot between the column and gear box, that should be good enough to keep the water out until i get the power rack and new front end.

Well, you never said you planned to install a different column! Yeah, you really did school yourself. Ya done good. I used eggsactly the same maneuver when I changed the column in my 50 chevy delivery. I did one thing different tho. I cut the shaft about 10 inches from the gear box, slid a seal down over the stub to keep crud outta the gear box and then welded a rag joint receiver [from some damn car] to the stub, keeping it cool with wet rags so I wouldn't smoke the new seal. I used an 80 chevy van, non tilt column after sawing off the shifter boss and filling the hole. [I epoxied a hunka 20 gage to the inside of the hole, using a piece of wire epoxied to the 20 gage for a handle..cut it of with dykes later]
The chevy van column is almost the same diameter as the old original chevy [and maybe your ford] so I was able to re-use my chevy column drop after a little filing. Looked almost original and gave me modern turn signals.

why would you RUIN a perfectly good STEERING unit?
The TILT is FOR fat LADIES with BIG knees who can't afford LIPO-SUCTION
