LOOKIN GOOD, this is how the sickness starts phase 1. Let us know if we can help ya in any way.
Got all the parts ya need for now.
Q?? What gear ratio did ya decide on ?? Seems to be a top secret with some teams but we are using a ford 9inch with 4.86 to 1 , not sure if we have enough motor to carry it out the other end but thats where we are now.
BTW if ya ever want to drive over to Indy and see ours of just make a trip some sat etc. let me know the place is yours.

With G78's on the rear at the traps we need a 3.53 for 4500 RPM @ 105 MPH.
That old mortor may end up being our radiator catch can!
If it was mine, I'd use it to slow the competition down!!
Just tell them it only works if you are in front of me.:D :D

Hey thanks for the invite:D If this weather ever clears we might want to do that. Might get up to 12" of snow here tonight...I'll be lucky to get to work tomorrow let alone drive to Indy.
BTW Our rear end is an old Winters QC so gear choices should be many.

That's what I'm saying it ain't fair. Well I guess we'll have to put it in the back.
The motor we bought is out of a '49-'50 Merc with the 3-speed & OD. We don't need no OD so I just posted in the want ads for a replacement. If any of you guys can help feel free to PM me please. The tranny we have has the large ('39-'48) snout on the front but I don't think a '39 toploader is the way to go.

The Speed Merchants tried the top loader behind there flatty and broke 2 of them. I dont think they think much of them. And they were taking of in second.

If anyone needs to calculate the RPM they will be turning the following formula will get the answer:
RPM= Gear ratio X mph / tire diameter X 336
Example: 3.73 X 105 / 28 X 336 = 4699.8 RPM

ron. . .
i assume that formula is using a 1:1 top trans gear?

FiddyFour, Actually you can plug any ratio in the formula and get the results. As an example, suppose you want to know the RPM when your in 2nd gear at 60 MPH.Multiply the second gear ratio X the rearend ratio, and plug that number in the formula and you'll your RPM at 60 MPH.Say your 2nd gear ratio is 1.75 and your rearend ratio is 3.75 and tire diameter is 28 inches then the formula would be:RPM= 60 X (1.75 X 3.75)/28 X 336 60 X 6.5625/28 X 336 60 MPH in second gear = 4725 RPMYou can change the formula around and solve for any of the variables: tire diameter, gear ratio, MPH, etc.Saves a lot of head scratching when your building the car.Ron

thanks Ron!!! awesome formula now that i actually have my head wrapped around it... math isnt my strong suit

Love that Merc. Glad to see you guys have the balls to run one. Ha, ha. We're going iwth the mid-sixties Ford three speed. We think it is the strongest (car) three speed trans. We'll find out this spring.

You're prolly right Rand Man but since we're on a tight budget for this year we'll prolly find a std. Merc 3-speed for this year and not have to worry about finding the other type bell, starter plate, clutch disk and maybe pressure plate to go that way this year. There were a couple of adapters on the For Sale section yesterday but I was too late:(
Received a PM from a HAMBer in Lexington this morning saying he has one we can have for $75.00. If we get it we'll have fortyfordguy go thru it at maybe a discount since he belongs to our car club:D

Back in the mid '60s I ran a '39 box behind the flattie in my '41 Merc. Broke several iv various street races, usually the bottom of the case departed after the 1-2 shift, though one grenaded off the line and spit the bottom of the case into the intersection in front of the car.
I don't think the box would hold up under racing for very long, though we had good luck with the stock trans in our '53 Ford K-gasser behind a much hotter flathead and never had a failure through much abuse.
In a light car I don't think the Merc trans will give you any problems.
