I want to put some lines on my hollowbody soon and as soon as I feel I'm good enough to live with it for the next 30 years, I want to give it a go. But the layout has me perplexed. I'm not really good enough yet to know how to do a design around ALL the areas in a Gretsch or Epiphone type body and have it look good. I've seen Setzer's flat black Gretsch, but that is a bit too much for me I think. My guitar is gold metalflake.

Hey Django, There's a killer striper & lettering guy in Swanton, Ohio that does handpainted graphics and striping on guitars.

His name is Todd Hanson and he has been featured in Signcraft magazine for it. He also does superb striping on leather jackets.

I'll have to show those issues soon.

I think you have a very "busy" subject to be striping so it needs something but it needs to be conservative. (If I was any damn good at striping at all) I would stripe it in a Tommy the Greek style with a red stripe inside two black stripes and all I'd do is detail it the way guitar makers "Band" guitars, usually with inlays, around the perimiter of the front and tracing around the shape of the "ƒ" holes. That's all!

I think I'd gold plate that tailpiece too, or at least polish the fucker, and get rid of the black tailpiece inset and do it candy red instead.

That's pretty cool.

I keep looking at this, but I stil think it's too much for a flake guitar. I love it though.

That looks killer! So it seems most people try to keep tight curving strokes to emulate the body of the guitar. I KNOW I will have to practice that, cause I am weak in tight turns.

As you have see from the Weber I need practice on symmetry and line quality. The red turned out pretty good, but the cream was thinner and wasn't pulling a nice line. It was my first time using a new brush and my first ever 2 color job. So for my guitar, I want to have it down a little better.

I keep my guitars for a long time. I'm about to sell my first guitar in over 13 years! They come in but they never leave. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey Django - maybe make a plastic cut out the same shape as the guitar to practice on. Then you could paint over it to start over for another try.

I don't know shit about guitars - but it will look bitchin when your done - what colors are you going to use with gold?

later, Josh

That's a good idea. I think I'll print one out and do it in pencil first. The colors will be black and cream. Just like that bitchin Galaxie convertible in my other thread.

I say paint it GOLD METAL FLAKE. Aka leave it just like it is. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif That rocks. If you feel the need keep it simple. Flashy guitars remind of of billet choppers with too many chrome doodads.

...so flashy has never been a problem, LOL. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I know what you mean though. Pyro52 has been trying to get me to let him stripe my orange Epiphone but I love that one just the way it is. The gold one is my newest and I just got it "hot rodded" with TV Jones pickups, so the striping will go along with that theme. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
