... something compact, 12V, small enough to go under an r/pu, but LOUD enough to get through to an SUV pilot on a cell phone with the windows up and the air on. What are you runnin?

One of my buddies runs electric air horns under the floor boards of his Harley... I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to hide them on a hot rod. They are umm very loud and surprise a lot of people. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I had a semi with train horns honk -- just to say hi, I was in the 29 -- as I was pulling onto an offramp. Scared the sh*t outta me. For a split second I was wondering where the train was, till I saw the trucker (or maybe f*cker) waving. He thought it was pretty funny. I'll pass on the train horns. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Almost got T-boned by a phone truck this weekend. Jerk was looking at some girl and didn't see me till I hit the horn. He never hit the brake, turned the wheel and went up over a curb and through some bushes. The next car is getting air horns!

Dave, Hella makes some nice, real loud 12v horns...
I run a pair of them in my 510, and people
WILL hear you when you honk at them..!!!
I ordered mine thru the Volks Cafe just so you know...
but if you want to swing on by the shop sometime,
I have a Hella catalog you could look at too...
Take it easy, Jack

Get a horn that sounds like a car horn. You scaire the shit out of them with a train horn or some super loud bullshit thing and they'll panic and lock their brakes right in front of you till they figure out what the hell just scaired them. By then, it'll be too late. Grab the dual horns out of a 70's car. The different frequencies of both horns seems to get thru to the tone deaf bastards.

510s rock.
I've been looking at air horns recently also. My stock horns don't cut it these days. They just arent loud enough for cell phone drivers. A buddy of mine put a 24" train horn that runs along his front fender with a small compressor wired to stock horn. Thing sounds like a freight train. I've been keeping an eye on ebay for a large one like that. I only honk when its necessary anyway.
The high pitched ones aren't as fun as a fog horn.

Hey Jack, thanks for the tip. I'll go down the block to the Volks guys and check 'em out -- maybe then come see you to hear 'em honk http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Do they need a compressor?

I have a few beep horns that are small and loud. Napa sells them for about 23.00 and I get 7.50 plus shipping. Have sold about 400 without complaints.

We were talking horns at lunch today. They ones we have in stock are too wimpy sounding. Jason, the young guy at the shop says you can adjust a stock GM horn to have a deeper pitch. We went out to look at his beater 80 Caprice and sure enough, there is a Torx looking screw that he just turns with a set of pliers to get the desired sound!
All the years I commuted by bicycle, I carried a rechargable air horn. Damn thing is SO FREAKING LOUD I scared ANYONE I blasted it at http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
My 54 has no working horn right now, I am thinking of a loud option for it and my Touring.
VW Bug horns are nice and small and have a reasonable tone.
Not so loud that they're not usable in traffic, but loud enough.
I thought the one I have on the 32 sounded like a RoadRunner horn until I heard a for-real RR horn on DRD57's coupe.
I have another V-Dub horn for the 31 as well as a 12V all steel Ahoogah horn.
Both of these are going on the 31 with a selector toggle switch.
If you use a V-Dub horn make sure you get the doubled up spring steel mounting straps for it.
I didn't on the first horn and bolted it directly to the 32's hood top frame. Damndest thing you ever heard when the horn set the hood to vibrating.
Sounded kinda like a Lion with a raspy throat.
With the straps, the familiar VW beep-beep we're all familiar with.
I ran a similar deal on a pickup a few years back.
Stock Ford horn and a pair of what seemed to be high pitched Hella's.
I think they're named Hella's cuz that's what they scare out of you.
They're not so loud, but very difficult to ignore. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Along the same line, has anyone ever wired horn to a foot switch? I'm thinking that could be pretty slick with the boat wheel.

I agree with hankcash. I had the dual 6v horns wired to 12v, it would scare people outta there skin! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I get around to it, I would like to run a Buick Tri-note horn. Like the ones that came on the Roadmasters of recent. Fer now, however I agree with the 6v horn on a 12v system. The one on my Plymouth sounds so sickly that it gets noticed from sounding fucked up.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't know about a foot switch, but I'm planning on this project getting a horn button in the steering wheel. My '38 has it up under the dash, and it's pretty awkward when you're in a hurry. On my '29 I wired it up to a starter button and put it right on the dash. Looks like it belongs there, and it's a little easier to get to when I'm in a hurry. But nothing beats having it right there in the center of the wheel. I envy you guys that live away from the kind of traffic we have...

Never thought about it but I guess I am lucky, only thing I ever have to use the horn on my vehicles for is to call up the cows!! They come running, means feed time!

Hmmm...6v horns with 12 volts going through 'em are pretty LOUD, eh???
Ha Ha...I still have the two big 6v horns I yanked OFF my car...might have to put 'em back ON!
Around here, you NEED loud horns...after spending a day on the road in and around Metro Detroit, I think driving anything less than a Stacy Keach SEMI in traffic is futile!
The yuppies are like cattle...they'll sit there at a GREEN light chewing their cud on a cell phone, or watching Keeanu Reeves on their DVD player until you give 'em a shot in the ass to get 'em moving again!
Loud horns work to some degree, but I've found too many can still ignore 'em. A nice rap on their back bumper tends to drive the point home, though!
(You know how cattle need to have them dogs run up and bite their ankles to get 'em going? Same deal!)

My 6 volt horns on a 6 volt car are pretty damn loud, I can't wait to hear them at 12 volts!
And I don't want train horns to scare old ladies or anything, just to scare my friends! The stock ones are pretty good motivators as is, but most people around here are in such a hurry, the sitting at green light thing is rare. It's more like- "Look at the old car, we should pull out in front of it!!" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
