They are waaay cheaper if you buy them directly from FTM which is Excels dealer in the states, If your powder coating them you can get them unchromed also, trust me I researched this. Buchanan charge 80 bucks for lacing and truing service, spoke set run about 80 bucks, and about 1 a spoke for polishing, I had full custom rims made there.

Yeah, I can lace em but you are better off to find someone that is doing em all the time and has the parts, spokes, nipples etc.

BTW, The Horse did a cool DIY article in the last couple years.

FTM?

Do they have a web site?

So if I am hearing you right... I'd buy the rim from FTM and then the spokes from ? and have someone lace them up?

Excuse me if I'm being a moron... but I'm new to this stuff.

Sam-Midwest cycles in Arnold Mo. are the main source for"aftermarket" Harley parts-for almost any catalog house you order from.
I got some stuff from a place in Georgia on Ebay and it was dropshipped to me from midwest!hell I bought it "right" in the first place with a no reserve deal on ebay-PLUS I got out of the sales tax-from an outa state vendor!
If you look at most sites and catalogs they use MIDWEST and merely order it for you and Midwest ships the stuff the catalogs never even have.
I bought my rear 16 for 100 or so[new]
were you wanting to lace a wheel to a drum?
the little chopper my son has uses a 16" harley rim laced to a 750 Honda drum brake [so it is do-able for sure].
that is a huge brake leaving a short spoke and looks good.

Sam, sounds like your looking for a WM3 40 spoke rim. Are you looking for steel or alloy? Also, what type of hub or brake are you using as it will be indicative of how the rim will be drilled. Buchanon's have been around forever and offer very good quality. You can also purchase polished stainlees spokes from them or CCI instead of chrome

Mr. Midnight,

The one I am looking at on the web-site is a WM6... a 3.5" wide rim. I want one that is wider than the stock Triumph rim. I also have a stock triumph hub to lace into it... and probably want stainless spokes.

Sam, Kosman does it all, and also machines their own aluminum hubs. They've been around for decades, and have designed and built many excellent frames, wheels, and rollers for dirt track, road racing, Pro Stock, and Top Fuel. They're great people to deal with, too.

Here's their wheels page: http://www.kosman.net/wheels.htm

Sam, how big of a tire are you looking to use? A WM6 will take a BIG bisquit.

Mr. Midnite,

There is an Avon SM MKII that is a 4.00-18 that I was planning on using. It measures 26.7" tall... and the overall width is 4.4"

Is that too narrow for a 3.5" rim??

I have not been able to find anyone that sells an 18" x 3" rim... 40 spokes, please. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Anyone know of one?

Sam.

Sam, the overall width on a motorcycle tire and the bead width is two different measurements. Nothing at all like a car rim. The tire you mentioned will fit on a WM3 or a WM4 rim just fine. It is a big & wide tire though and you need to make sure it will fit up into your fender ok. Also, your choice of using Avons is excellent

Sam,
to expand on my previous post, you haven't found a 3" rim because they don't exist. But again, you need to be looking at the bead width, not overall. A WM3 has a bead width of 2.15" while a WM4 has a bead width is 2.5". Then it jumps to a WM6 which is 3.5". The tire you want to use will work with the WM3 or 4. I sent ya a pm,

Robert

Choprods, the boys bike is looking sweet! I kinda liked the other bars he had on it... but then again, he has his vision of the bike.

Hi donnie... I miss you. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Here's a sneak peak of my project... early pre-unit frame, unit motor... things will get more interesting when it is more "together"... trust me. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

SamIyam

The lower rails will get shortened ahead of the pre-unit motor mount so I can use it with the unit motor... it will then also line the center tube up with the unit rear motor mounts... I cut the center down tube off just on top of the original swing arm mount (So I could get rid of that big old hnk of ugly steel)

This is it for now...

Took a good two inches out of it up front... and an inch out back... brought it out of the fat bob realm back into something more Triumph-bobber'ish... oh, it will also get a high tunnel... I live too close to 'Frisco to have my tank up that high.

They told my parents "he's smart... he just doesn't APPLY himself!"

I had a nun at the Catholic church ask me one time "do you eat cereal with a lot of sugar on it?"

My buddy John had told me a joke "what does 7Up and a Nun have in common? ...never had it... never will"

We were like 10 years old... and I just began laughing hysterically... in church... and then she comes up behind me, grabs my ear... and asks if I eat cereal with sugar on it... that's RICH! Hahahahahahaha...
