View Full Version : "Jet Age" Hood Ornament?

My only Jefferson find was this hood ornament. It's 6.5 inches long. Any ideas on how old it is or what it could be off of? It's stamped with "Pat. App. For" on the jet and "PT-612" on the base. I might stick it on my Plymouth for a while, but it would look pretty neat on a 40s streamliner.

I just looked in my U.S. hood ornament book, and it's listed on a back page as a "WHAT?"

I'd bet Oldsmobile, though. Buick's looked like rockets and Chevy's looked like birds.
Olds jets look like jets.

I think U.S. auto makers should bring back the huge, gaudy, hood ornaments.
I'm looking for a '52 Nash "flying lady" ornament for my Dodge Ram. Everyone else is too. They always seem to top out near $100 on Ebay. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Joe,

What is the name of your hood ornament book? I would like to get a copy. I have a few hood birds of my own that I would like to identify.

It's called "U.S. Hood Ornaments and More" by Lynn Huntsburger.

I got it off of Ebay.

I've got a '62 J.C. Whitney catalog but it's got nothing in there like it.
Be earlier than that if it's in a JCW catalog.

I am guessing it's an accesory piece and judging from the styling mid 50's. Has some Buck Rogers styling to the fuselage but the wings are early jet style. Just an un-educated guess.

If it has "Pat. App. for" it would be aftermarket. It has a vaguely familiar look - the Western Auto store near where I grew up had various hood ornaments like that for sale, including a plane that had a propeller that was spun by the wind. They were next to the necker nobs, mudflap lights, package shelf stoplights, and other dodads in the 50's.

I would assume that they are 50's aftermarket as well, as for its value I've got good and bad news for you, I saw several of those at carlisle.. somebody is repoping them...
however I saw another one, identical to yours except that it had YELLOW/ orange plastic sections extending from the wings (forward and rear) so i think that the originals may have had the plastic tips? anybody know for sure?
