When did Metallic paint first hit the streets? When did it first become popular?

Wow, thanks.
I was thinking it was first used in the 70's. I was WAY off! From that message board Mutt posted it was used in the 20's too! Thats cool.
What about on Hot Rods and stuff? Anyone know when it was used on them?
Nick
In case you were thinking of Metalflake and not just regular metallic paint, Metalflake was first used around '58, if memory serves correctly.
Dick Scritchfield's Deuce Roadster was an early recipient

Hey, DrJ, I was talking of metallic not metal flake. But that is still great to know. Thanks!.
Nick
The Hot rod coverage of Scritchfield's roadster being painted with metalflake was '60 or '61 IIRC. It was being touted as the hot new thing...

The first time someone took a can of it outside and spilled it.
I remember noticing some of the new GM cars with metallic paint in the fall of 1967, when the '68s started showing up.
