My son,the infamous "Race" got his frame back yesterday from Curbside Hot Rod Parts, in Danville Ohio.

I bought him a set of ASC stamped 32 rails for his birthday last september. A few months ago he droped them off at Curbside to be Boxed in a Jig and then placed in yet another jig to be squared and have the front and rear x- members installed. There is no question as to the straightness and truness of this frame and that is why the extra money was spent to have it done in a jig by someone that does it all day long.

You will notice in the pics the way cool boxing plates with the belled holes. They are from Ionia Rod Shop(our own HOTRODDRUMMER here in the HAMB). These have to be seen in person to appreciate how cool they really are.

In the front he wanted a flat x-member and the rear will use a 40 leaf with a narrowed truck 9" Ford so he has the 5 1/2" bolt patern for the 16" steel wheels.

He worked on the road all winter and saved the cash to do this rod and now can't wait to get into the build.

A beautiful 32 Ford Pickup body will be mounted next. It was found here on the HAMB, (thanks again TrailerEd). It will have a shortened 32 style box, and no fenders.

We will try and show most of the built up here. I can't tell you guys how proud I am of this kid. His intentions are to build a very traditional style rod with good parts make it save, make it nice and then dirve the wheels off of it. All I'm saying about the drive train for now is it will have a 4 speed. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's some pics of him assembling some of the pieces.

Sounds like your son has his head screwed on straight, and it sounds like he's had some good parenting as well. Congratulations to both of you, and I look forward to watching the build as it progresses.

Leaves do not fall far from the tree.........

There is a passage in the Bible that says ' lead your children in the ways of righteousness and they will follow ' ..........or something close to that...... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the post Rudy. I know Race isn't a registered HAMber but he is a HAMBer in every other way. I know he would rather be out in the shop than on the web and that's cool. Race will do a fine job and I can't wait to see it. Keep us posted.

Way to go Rudy. That's how you form a solid relationship with your son, by participating in a mutually satisfying activity.
Way to go Race. You should know that your dad is very proud of you and he doesn't just express it here on the HAMB but in conversation with others whenever your name comes up. He sure missed you this winter and I can only imagine how nice it is for him to have you back.
Way to go guys. I'm expecting a ride in that pickup sometime this summer so lets get building. I'm also in agreement with you to build it safe, it's the ONLY way to go. Now take your time and do it right (only hurry, haha).

Keep us informed of the progress - Will it be up and running this summer?

Is he a HAMB member yet?

Thanks for the nice words. Here is a pic of the super nice body. It will be chopped 5 inches. but the rear window will be less. I was very inpressed with the way Tman cut his at the top and made a new flange to bolt the top to and reinstalled it. SO I(we http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif) will look at doing something along those lines with the chop.

My son come to me this evening and told me that he wanted to keep the 50 merc that I was trying to sell. In the beginning he wanted to trade or sell and buy a 60 caddy. He told me he wanted us to build it together because he could learn more . His mom told me he knew how much "I" really wanted to do the merc.Makes you feel good about how you raised them. TP Oh yeah, he's 13.

Damn Denise , I was going to volunteer to do some welding for Race, just so I could say I had contributed something. If you've got the welding covered maybe I'll just clean the shop for them so they won't have to stop progress to do it. Running a broom is something I do have experience with. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif,
It happens every time. An appprentice gets his (her) journeyman's card and they just have to show off. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Nice. I will starting on a pickup soon and hope to post some pictures. I'll be following your build-up, so keep us updated with pictures. We all need the inspiration! Looks good so far.

Coincidentally, I just picked up a set of black '40 wheels with the same caps and trim rings on Friday. I hope to get the tires mounted soon.

Although speeking of Rockys old truck, I think the chop was about perfect. Do you remember how much it was chopped?

Good for the two of you.
Looks like you're more than a good example and Race has learned the value of patience as well.
Far better to work for a longer period of time and end up with something really nice and dependable and good looking and fun and all that stuff.

You're right on the boxing plates, those are cool.

As a small side story, my rod shop owning friend who was running a 31 on 32 rails roadster at the time got together with his son and they built a nice full fendered A sports coupe.
Complete with A/C - which was a rarity in the late 70's early 80's.

So they're headed for one of the first Tulsa big-time get togethers - about 1200 miles or so away - and the temps are about 105.
Dad's roasting in his roadster, kid pulls alongside on the freeway, opens the window about 2", sticks his hand out and waves from the confines of the chilled down A.

There's a lesson there somewhere, but I'm darned if I know what it is.

Good foundations are good . . . whether in life, houses or hot rods.

You done good raising that boy.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

My p/u and Rocky's were both cut 5&1/2". Gives you a 6" windshield (legal min. in WA state) PM me if you need any pics of the flange set up for the roof or the sleeves for the posts.

You guys with the older boys "turning out right" need to post the HAMB guide to raising a hot rod son.

Nice story and always glad to hear familys sticking together!

MATT!! I was hoping to get your attenion. The "Belled" boxing plates are a big hit here at the garage. Our buddys think they are bitchen. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. I told Race it's too bad we have to put a body on the frame once it's done.

Hows that shop truck coming along. You guys better get it done OR I'll be forced to build my own version http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's what i did, didn't mess wiith the top flange, just cut up and around the rear window, then chopped it as a seperate section. My main goal was to avoid a "mail slot", and get the rear window more "centered" in the panel. I think the results are worth the extra work no matter which route you go, I like being able to see out the back!
