Well I guess I'm a 'Buick guy' now. Just dragged home a 1960 Le Sabre convertible to keep the 59 Invicta wagon company. And to think I wasn't going to go to the Carlisle flea market so as to avoid temptation.
ScaryLarry found the car there and is a ruler- I may name my first born after the guy. SoWhat checked it out and Motor Mikey dragged it home so thanks to all.

This is one of my favorite body styles and will definitely be a keeper getting the custom treatment. I was smiling the whole way home while following the tow truck- amazing how a new toy can improve your disposition.
Anyone have photos of other custom 60s? I'm mainly looking for paint ideas, although it'll probably be a while till it gets that far. Any sources for rockers and quarters for these cars?

Anyway, thanks again to Larry, Clark, and Mike. Hope everyone else did OK at the swaps this weekend!

Man that car is bad assss. I always loved that bodystyle of Buick. Did you get a good deal on it? Does it run and drive? You're one lucky SOB. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks all. It was 4k, runs like a top with the 364 nailhead. Has one wheel cylinder that's locked up so I'm grounded until that's fixed. Opened the trunk and there was a new wheel cyl there so as soon as it stops raining I'll throw it in and be roadworthy. Well roadworthy, but not 100% legal and inspected.

The chopped black Buick belongs to a friend of mine here in Rochester. He's an official "geezer" and as such winters in Florida. He should be home soon, or not as we do live in the Alaska of New York! Still having frost warnings and it could snow!!! Anyway, let me know if you need any info on the car.

Great looking car. I would shave it, drop it lower, and paint it metallic copper. There, that was easy. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd personally leave it all one color with no scallops, panels, flames, or other hoo-hah to junk it up -- let those cool bodylines do all the talking.

Rob,

That is indeed a most excellent score! I'm so bummed I missed Carlisle, although the rally this weekend was awesome. I took the little projector and loops with me and they were a huge hit last night!

Congrats on the new car!

Hey old and krusty, does your friend know anything about the story of the black buick? The builder, Jerry Hill, was like a father to me...(RIP http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif). If he needs to know any details of the build, I can probably help. It's one hell of a road car, and a really innovative custom. Glad to hear it's in good hands. I would have loved to bought it after the family decided to sell it, but no way could I afford what it was worth. I did buy the last project Jerry was building, a '53 Buick hardtop...it's gonna be wild whenever I finish it.

Wasn't Jerry the guy that built the wild two tone blue 60 Buick wagon, too? Think I remember seeing a write up in the KOA or KKOA papers about both cars.

Hey Kustom, my friend did know the guy that built the Buick. How well, I don't know. He had seen the car at a couple of gatherings and had got major wood lusting after it-which is really a feat when you are a geezer! Anyway, he had made an offer to buy, I think, but was rejected. At some later point in time he became aware that the car was for sale and he jumped on the opportunity to buy it. He learned that the family was offering it for sale, as Jerry had died. If you have more to the story, I'm sure Dick (the new caretaker) would be very happy to learn more about it. Also, I'm certain he would love to see the Buick you acquired (and so would I!) so how about some pics? Please let me know and I'll try to hook you up with Dick.

To answer both question, yes Jerry built the wild chopped '60 wagon as well, it is now owned by a friend of mine in the Cincinnatti area..he was a master of metal work, painted almost all his cars black....he also had built a wild late model custom, a '79 Malibu 2-dr hardtop wagon/sedan delivery. It has been sold as well, not sure where it went. Like I said, he was a master at metalwork, and I was just the apprentice... I had so much to learn, and little did I know I would have so little time to spend with him. That's a long story...I'm planning on writing it all down one day. But, back to the cars. The last three years or so Jerry was with us, I was with him at almost every show he attended, and know almost all the construction details of the cars. The family entrusted me to take the Black Buick to the Rebel Run in Lima a few years back, as they were giving away a Jerry Hill Memorial Award. Talk about a trip, getting to drive that bad ass car all weekend... About the '53, Jerry had built a '53 in the late '80's, and sold it (it was somewhere in the New York or New Jersey are last I heard). This car was one he was building to "fix" everything he didn't like about the first one. Pretty much complete handbuilt frame of his own design, the ride height at the rockers was planned for about 5". All the restoration of the body was complete, the chop is all marked out on it, but was never done. It has one of his "signature" flowing consoles from the dash to the package tray, with a built-in cooler in the center. It's currently hibernating in one corner of the shop, awaiting the day I feel up to completing it. I feel that I need to develop some of my building skills to a higher level before I tackle it, it will be a tribute to him, and there are certain areas I'm not sure how he planned on finishing, so it will be a combination of both mine and his work. I'll see if I can dig up some pics of when I brought it home later and post them.
