'40 Dash in a '28/'29 Model A

Anyone have any good pictures? I started mine tonight.

Wihtout an upper dash rail, I'm trying to visualize how to fill that gap. Think I'll need to modify an upper dash rail to do it.

Seems like someone in the Choppers club had one that "rolled" right over onto the cowl though.

Anyone?

Cut the dash to fit the rail . Or inset the dash under the rail mine is cut its in a 34 will see if I have a picture to post to give you an idea.

I put a 40 dash in my 31 roadster without cutting it in half, or doing any weird sectioning. But you'll have to do a lot more massaging to make it fit in a 28 or 29 A. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What windscreen are you using? Hallock, Duval, homemade?

you will really need to trim (or to do a really neat job, cut back approx 1 1/2") the top seam of the tank for it to 'blend in' nicely (ie you will either have to make a 'filler piece' to make the roll, or depending on how you position things, roll top edge of the 40 dash to suit).

Sorry for the clear as mud description, there is not a simple answer as it can be done a number of ways, just remember to measure 3 times, think about what you want to achieve, and then cut to suit.

Here's a old photo of my 28 A r/p/u which I've fabricated a 'hallock style' screen for from Alloy, and I've inserted the gauge cluster from a customline, trimmed back the F/Tank joining seam, and then welded to create a 90 degree edge.

Hatch put this dash in my '29 for me. He used the dash rail. Seems to work pretty good but it's a little ratty. I'm still working on it (it's only been about 8 years).

Thought I'd show my dash photo to illustrate that I understood what he mean't about the 'roll' joint, as well as the other options (again depending on his choice of windscreen and positioning of the dash from the windscreen.

Don't ask me how to do it, 'cause I haven't done it yet. But, it seems that the best looking ones keep the dash rail and reform the top of the donor dash to fit under the rail.

Example A:
Horrible photo (sorry) of Rodney's '31 Coupe with a '38 or '39 Standard dash. Rodney had to work the top roll of the dash to give it some more curve to match the Model A windshield curve. He didn't use the dash rail, but the dash he used looks like he incorporated the rail as part of the dash. Some of you guys might have a better pic. He drove it to Bonneville with the "Bonneville or Bust" white paint on the decklid.

Next is a '27 T with a '40 dash. This one belongs to Bob Wilson. But it should be no surprise. If Bob can fit him and Big Ric in the roadster (he did it at the Shop Rag Garage Crawl) and a Hemi in front of the firewall, then he should be able to mash a late dash into this car. Notice the dash bolts in and has a piece of fender welting to clean up the seam.

I'll be using a stock-style windshield and posts with an upper dash rail. I want to weld it to the dash rail and making the whole thing removable.

The closed cars and cars with a Hallock or Duval windsheild with the dash running right up to the windshield or onto the cowl look good but on the open cars with stock windshields I like the look you get when the upper dash rail is used.

Now I just need to find an upper dash rail. Thanks guys.
