I recently picked up an HVLP spray gun, and would like to try it on my old bicycle before I attack my Chevy with it. I don't want to get into the expense of automotive paint yet, so can someone recommend a paint I can pick up at Home Depot and tips on thinning it properly. I don't need a show quality finish. I just want to get the feel for spraying and leave a decent coat of black paint on my Murray. Thanks

Man, I can't help you out on Home-Depot paints, I only use automotive paints.

go and get the stuff you need! Automotive Paint that is. Dont mess around with other junk!
Its kinda like saying I want to build a hotrod but I will just build a model to get the hang of it.

The cheep getto way is:
Go get yourself a pint or quart of Rust oleum-satin black works for me or what ever color ya like.. and 2010 acetone... mix at a rate of 3:1 (3 parts paint to 1 part acetone..or 4:1 depending.. you should only need 7-9oz mixed max to shoot a bike frame with an HVLP gun... But, keep in mind, every time you mix the paint with acetone it will make a slightly different shade, so make enought..
All that said, your better off using automotive panit like a basecoat. Go to your local paint place and ask if they have any mis-matched paint... I've pick up 100's of colors for next to nothing that way.. good luck...

Mismathced paint would be the way to go. flatshoebox has got the right idea. Should be able to get it cheap. Sometimes if you catch them in a good mood you can get some for free.

Definatly the way to go. I have sprayed the rustoleum through my hvlp though and I personally spent more time than I wanted to setting the gun up to spray it right. Maybe my ratio was wrong I dont know .
