car running funny, need diagnosis

My car has been running funny the past day. It wont idle good and acts like it has a wild cam in it, but its a 170 6 cyl.
If i punch the throttle in first or second gear it will go like a bat out of hell, then if i let off the gas and try to cruise it will start jerking and acting funny again??
I tried to adjust the carb, but i probably messed everything up by doing that, i would say the fuel pump works good because i have vaccum wipers and they act fine?? Im going to put a timing light on it and see what that tells me. What else do you guys and gals think i should check?? Thanks Nate

1. Vacuum leak
2. Bad carb base gasket
3. Ignition timing
4. dirt in the "cruise-circuit" in the carb.
5. Old gas

check you coil wire & also take your air adjustment vavle out of the carb spray some carb cleaner in the hole & then blow it out with some air, put it back together & see if that helps.
You can also try & pinch off the fuel line at the carb( if its rubber) & let it run, as its about to stall take the vise grip off the line, sometimes the surge will get rid of anything caught under the needle & seat.

got it all set guys, thanks for the help, i cleaned the carb and fuel pump and adjusted the right way and to its setting and adjusted the timing and its running pissa!! Thanks again. nate
