I have a new goal. take my 1962 plymouth savoy S/S clone, and build it for bonneville. Inspired by "plymouth in a hurry" in july 1962 car craft, a hardtop plymouth similar to mine, only this one had 2 paxton blowers on the 413. the car turned mid 12s in the quarter, and around 165-175 wide open on various courses. My savoy turns 12 flats in the quarter, out of tune, spinning off the line. Accounting for the tire technology, they would be about an even match i'd say.

the chassis on the savoy should be good to go, with a rollbar or cage, whatever the rules are on that. I need to get some real tires, swap in a fourspeed, and build another shortblock for it. The motor in it now is very good, but i built it for 1/4 mile at a time racing. I have a giant list of questions, and obvoiusly, this is still well in the planning stages, i was hoping someone could point me to some answers. Here are a few: the motor ought to make maybe 550hp at the flywheel, about what kind of gear should i run? figure a realistic redline of 6500 rpm, or maybe 7500 if i go with aftermarket rods. what modifications need to be done to get the oil back into the oilpan? i think extra breathers are a must have, windage tray, and maybe some baffles to keep the oil off the cam on it's way back down from the heads? this might be in the rule book when i get it, but what kind of tires are the ones to run?

This isn't going to happen soon, but i think if i do the homework and plan it right, i'd have it ready for next year. production sedan class, B engine, i bet the record is way higher than what this motor could pull, but, it's about having fun, right? David

Sounds cool but S/S cars are wayyyy cooler. I've always liked "Suddenly", cool car right there with a BIG early Hemi and a 6-71 on it I think. Could you post some pics of your car while your at it?

David -- You would probably run in CGC class (Classic Gas Coupes & Sedans, 1948-1981), in B displacement category (373-439 cid).

Here's your competition . . .

B/CGC, The Daytona Charger, L. Sicillo 10/03 225.372 mph

The '04 Rules & Regulations book is "at the printer" and should be available soon. For info on records and joining SCTA, go to . . .

You're gonna love it! Good luck.

I sent off my BNI membership today. I need advice from people who have run big block mopars at the salt before, no get to know the little tricks and such. The old racers around here pretty much just drag race, they don't know much more than that. Is there any other resourses, tech articles, or people i should talk to? Does the rule book have recomendations in it, or is it just whats legal and whats not?

The car now has, GASP!, disk brakes on the front, i was thinking drums would be better, less drag and because the shutdown area is a few miles instead of less than 1/4 mile. what are some thoughts on that? thanks, Dave

Don't buy any parts until you've studied the rulebook.

Engine set-ups are very similar to what you'd run on the strip, but you can increase the clearances. Depending on the class, competitive engines somewhat resemble what you'd see in sprint cars, Pro Stock, Pro Mod, and Top Fuel.
