I have no idea what they do, probably more up Bruces alley.

It allows movement at the adjuster. This lets the shoes act like modern shoes where one pushes on the next to improve pressure on drums. They work very well from what I have heard. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Is that like the difference between early brakes and Bendix-action brakes? How exactly does it work?

(Thanks, Carl!)

Looks to me like they convert the brakes into full-floating brakes, instead of the fixed anchor type they were originally.
This will work much better, allowing the full surface of the shoes to contact the drum, thereby increasing both braking and lenghtening the wear-usage cycle.
