Hey HAMBers! I can finally post a picture of my ride (as promised) to add to my previous intro. Am curious about opinions on painting it. Was wondering if I should leave the original paint alone. I'd like to paint it but I've been told the value would decrease tremendously... I'd like to hear your opinions about that. I have a few dents by the wheel well from a towing excursion that need fixing and the pinstiping that someone did was awful. Does anyone know where I can get the trim that runs along the bottom of the doors? It is flaking and dented but I haven't been able to find replacements. She is also spewing oil like crazy but that is another post all together. Once I figure out where it is definately coming from I'll be asking about that too I'm sure. Thanks for all the help. Any advice would be appreciated. I am new to owning such a piece of history and I don't want to screw it up. Thanks for all the advice on the previous posts.

paint it any color you want
it is YOUR car

the trim peice at the bottom of the door is chrome?
bring it to a shop to be rechromed

clean your engine compartment real well
put on new valve cover gaskets
then watch where the fluid leaks
note if its power steering, oil, or tranny
and when it leaks

my advise
not really worth alot tho

04-22-2004, 04:47 PM
yeah, that's what I think too (about the paint). I got the car from my dad when he died so it isn't like I will be selling it. I'd rather have the color I want. Thanks for the advice.

if you plan on repainting
you'll be taking the trim off anyway
check and see how many peices you might want rechromed
see if the shop might be willing to straighten for you too if you don't think you can do it
then you can get both things done at once

ideas anyway

Can someone tell me what that housing is next to the battery that looks like a coffee can? What is it's function? Just learning so bear with me. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Don't mind the wood piece on the battery http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif It was too small for the tie down brackets so I rigged it with wood to keep it in place...yikes...

trim - go to the pomona swap meet and look around... youll find the trim. do a search for 66 galaxie trim on google and look up the repop prices... used, it shouldnt cost much... maybe 50% and below the price of the repops - your car is common.

clean off the shite pinstripe... and keep the paint if it isnt screwed up. if it is, go to HAMBr lownslow (imperial customs, Burbank) for some FLAKE work http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

you going for mild custom or stock cruiser?

74ina66
04-22-2004, 05:04 PM
also, was wondering if anyone knew about the rims. It seems as though they had been painted black in some spots. Just wondering if anyone knows how the originals look. Thanks.

04-22-2004, 05:06 PM
don't know about the coffee can

but i'd suggest getting a different battery hold down in place
most auto parts stores carry a variety of them
you don't want it wobbling around
looks like the sides of the hold down just wingnut down? if so keep screwing them then break off the excess with a pair of vise grips

also if it doesn't fit right are you certain you have the right battery size?

are you planning a resto or mild custom with your car?
your questions seem to lean toward the resto
just curious

Thanks... do you know the particulars about the Pamona SM? Also, what would I use to remove the striping? It looks like it was done and then cleaned up where it peeled at some point with paint with an unsteady hand...it is really not cute http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Well, it has it's problems of course. Right now I have a bad oil leak. So far with owning this car I've been lucky and it's always been a cheap fix for me. This time I am afraid it could be something bigger. It has some tranny leaks too and it could probably use a rebuild. It slips from drive to neutral on it's own when I am stopped occasionally and at higher speeds I feel the bands slip. It has some slow acceleration but I'm hoping timing will fix this(?) any advice is appreciated. I am anxious to start learning how to repair it myself. Thanks so much for your reply.

Nice looking Ford, how many miles are on that rig?

Oil leaks are usually not a huge thing to fix, unless its a rear main seal, then it can be a pain in the ass.

Paint it how you want it! You can always change it later if you want.

it has original 80,500 on it. Unfortunately I think it IS the rear main seal... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I guess if I have my tranny worked on that would be the best time to have that seal replaced. The oil is just pouring out. It sucks. This weekend I am going to hose the engine out and try to find out where it is coming from, take pics of it and ask for help on here. Unless you gto at least $5000 to have it done right... DON'T PAINT IT!!!

I know the old yellow paint ain't FLAT BLACK like all the Betty Page Chicks dig... but it's old... so leave it that way.

Also... there is a company called Ano-Brite down in SoCal.

They don't speak good english... but they kick ass at straightening, polishing and re-anodizing 60's and 70's trim pieces.

I believe those rocker panel moulding pieces are NOT chrome... rather anodized aluminum. A different process than chrome.

Anyway, cool car... don't change it much for the sake of changing it. Your views over the next few years of what a cool car is are going to change... so the best thing to do is WAIT.

Sam.

A 7-Litre Galaxie? Don't mess with it, keep it as original as possible. One of those rocker pieces might be stainless -- relatively easy to straighten and polish.

Those things will tromp most stock mustangs and other muscle cars of the era -- some of the fastest luxo-cruisers built. One of my authors has one, loves to tell about the time he humbled a boss 429 from a stoplight.

There is a 7-Litre galaxie registry -- check out these links:

<font color="green"> Hey another '66, sweet! I have a passenger side rocker molding for it but I don't know how much it would cost to ship to the west coast, seeing as it's about seven feet long. As far as the leaks go, I have had/still have them all. Power steering, valve covers, intake, pinion seal, trans, TRUNK! Imagine driving all the way to Montana and then find out you have no dry clothes thanks to a rain storm in Oklahoma/Kansas. Did you know that at 70 MPH rainwater will run UP the channels between the trunk lid and body? Then it finds that little weather stripping seam at the top and pours into your trunk?! Well, I didn't! My suitcase was soaked! Everything in the suitcase was! I had to throw away two good magazines! Two! And don't get me started on how the clothes smelled! Two days in weather from 40 degrees in Nebraska to 93 in western South Dakota they marinated! One of my best shirts was...

...sorry off track. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

About the paint, leave it alone unless it's just completely shit. In fact, leave the car as much stock as possible (I know that's blasphemy here) and find an old runner with a 352 (like mine), 390 or even 289 to beat on. If you do paint it, FLAKE! Lots on the roof and a good solid color on the body.

Well, it's time to go. Have fun with that beauty. If you get a chance, send me a bigger pic of that Galaxie *cough* and you *cough* to stare at.

7466 As said before that isnt a galaxy. A friend restored one in the past 3 yrs and paid $1,200 bux for just the rear 7 litre trunk badge. Im a nut for those cars. I drive a 66 LTD daily but with the 390 that 428 has MANY morehorses and are a great runner when in good shape.Be careful who you deal with and what you change, that is a valuable car. The Galaxie club would be a good choice. Snoop around and see who you might trust. With only 80.000 miles I would get a new steel timing chain installed soon. The old plastic one is probably chipping apart and in the pan.Move to Seattle I will help you get that FE running like it should.--Feder

I'd gas weld armor plating on it, equip it with a propane powered tennis ball cannon and crash it through the gates of a Bad Guy's Hideout and shoot the place up...then scram before Decker or Fullbright arrived in their souped up drab green Volares and Aspens!

Ha Ha Ha...Maybe that's just the Mr T in me talking!

Ya got a cool car there, and it'll always be special to ya cuz it was your Dad's. I'd say do what ya WANT with it...there's almost nothing that can't be UNDONE later, and changing the look of the car while keeping it alive mechanically will help you to enjoy it more as your tastes change and evolve!

The car is an heirloom, and a PERSONAL piece of family history to YOU. Let the Blue Oval fanatics drool on their socks and whine about how it oughtta be restored to 100% stock condition. Is that what Dad woulda wanted? Is it what YOU want?

Fact is, you could Earl Scheib it PINK today, then paint it three more times over the next five years...and STILL penny up for a full resto if you opt to go that route sometime!

If it were me (seriously...I mean, I can't weld...but I could build a cannon if I needed one!) I'd lower it, bolt on a nice wheel/tire combo, clean it up and have it sprayed a hot, yet not overpowering color...then seal up the leaks and deck the mill out with some Cobra LeMans valve covers, maybe a dual quad set-up, oval Cobra air cleaner, headers...somethin' like that!

Not cheap, but way COOL! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's a sweet ride as is...whatever you decide to do...have FUN and take the time to ENJOY it...I know your Dad would be happy that way!!

Dudette, that is one really great ride you have there, i went to work for Ford in 1968 &amp; you have one of there finest cars! A guy i worked with ahd the same , exact one, but his was a 289( I think, that was my drug years!lol).
The rear seal can be replaced right in the car, you don't have to remove the engine. The tranny is a C-6, really bullet proof, one thing about them is that you have to run ford ATF!!, type F,try draining it completely, replacing the filter,I think the converter has a drain &amp; putting type F in,not dextron, or type A or any shit like that!!go to the auto store yourself &amp; buy it if you have to.Also it has adjustable bands, I think if you find a old mechanic, he'll have the special Torque wrench that slips when it gets to the right #'s.For some reason 10# sticks in my mind, but i can't remember if its inch or foot lbs!!
You can do what you want to the car, it is yours, but with those seats( only the second time i've ever seen them)I'd try to keep it somewhat "stock" looking, add some cruzin acessoriers thats can be "reversed" if you ever change your mind in life, throw in some cool style ols shit like one of those fuzzy cats whos eyes blink with the turn signals, etc.&amp; skirts, maybe twin antennas on the back. The hubcaps are rweally nice, I think there also stockers.
I'm not sure what a 7 litre engine( sorry, I'm still an american, I only speak one lang.!!)But i'm sure you mean 390, a strong ,strong motor!! If it was a 427 you could write your own check!
I envoy you, you have one of the finest rides henry made,Be real proud of it &amp; keep it forever.

...but in MERCURY talk it went either way...the 1968 Cougar GT-E (rare cat!) came with 427s very early, then got 428s for the final few hundred. Either way, the fender tag just read "7.0 Litre".

My number one absolute DREAM ride, as far as production cars go...only about 600 were built, and only the first couple hundred had the cross-bolted 427 side oiler...all were automatics, though!

<font color="green"> I have a passenger side rocker molding for it but I don't know how much it would cost to ship to the west coast, seeing as it's about seven feet long.

Neppy,
Do you also have the rear piece of the passenger side?

That's a big 10-4 good buddy. In fact, I have all the trim I pulled from mine. The driver side rocker moulding was gone (stupid bastards who gave it the cheap-o paint job ruined it and the fender lip chrome). Mine had a similar trim package as yours it appears from the pics so I think I could easily help with any parts you need. Mind you, they're not perfect (90K+ miles when I pulled them) but the lower pieces are in much better shape than the ones you pictured. And I'm still waiting on that picture. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif </font>

If yer hosing down the engine, don't get any water in the carb or oil, put plasic bags on all holes that take gas, oil or air.

Hey, you said you are a new to this. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
