View Full Version : 32 roadster update

It was bound to happen. A guy can only take so much temptation, or was it torture. One day I snapped, or as one of my more colorful friends says “He busted a spring”.

I’ve been working away in the shop, trying, sometimes in vain, to keep the coupe in one piece and sanding on the Cadillac. Sanding, sanding, sanding…. While there in the corner under a thick blanket of dust, mostly primer dust, patiently waits the deuce roadster. Well, not so patient really. Every time I look over there it seems to scream “HEY!!!!! What about me?!?!?! When’s MY turn?!?!?!

I keep saying “after the Caddy is done or at least mostly back in one piece”. I’ve set a completion date for the Caddy for Paso ’06. That’s two years plus at least another two to re-do the roadster means I can’t drive it for at least 4 more years. That’s too long but I can’t just put the Caddy on the back burner for 2+ years while I build the roadster besides I don’t have enough space to have both of them completely blown apart for that long.

So, a few days ago I came up with a scheme that gets me into the roadster within a few months and still keeps the Cadillac on schedule for Paso ’06. The basic plan is to buy a basic, low buck, repop roller deuce chassis, put the roadster body on it as is and drive it while I finish the Cadillac. Then when the Cadillac is done, I’ll build the original deuce chassis the way I really want it. The deuce body will get the appropriate body work and paint before being installed on its permanent chassis. Then I’ll buy a repop body for the repop frame, paint it and sell it.

I’ve been refining the plan over the past few days and it’s coming together well. Originally I thought of using the low mileage Cad500 / TH400 slated for the Cadillac for power. That would have necessitated getting replacement cores of each of those to rebuild for the Cadillac. However, after some quick measuring I determined that combination would not fit under the stock hood with the stock firewall and I don’t intend to cut either one. Plan B: I’ve got a TH350 under the bench and Frank Klein has a complete ’64 283 without a home. Some Ram’s horn manifolds, an old pair of ‘vette valve covers I got from RottenRodney, and that grody old Edelbrock 3X2 manifold with 97’s on it should work just fine (probably need to get Jere Job to give the 97’s a once over. Anybody got his number handy?).

I ordered the repop chassis from CSR Mfg. but I had to make some changes to their basic entry level offering. Making this prime vintage steel ride around on a repop chassis is bad enough, I can’t make it suffer the indignity of it being a 4 bar chassis with coil overs, disk brakes and a tube axle. By the time I got done with upgrades, downgrades and swapping in a few old parts out of my junk stash, I ended up a few bucks under the base price for the chassis. The 4 bar front and tube axle will be swapped out for a beam and hairpins. The rear 4 bars and coil overs will be swapped out for hairpins, a buggy spring and covered shocks. I’ll supply the Vega box, spindles, and ‘56 F100 brakes for the front. They’ll add the appropriate bungs for the fenders and running boards. I’ll run the fenders while the car is in its beater state. When it gets mated back up with its original chassis it’ll be a high boy.

Some other parts from the junk stash that will be used: a set of small Guide headlights without the parking lights, a grody old headlight bar that I think is for a deuce (it’d be cool if I could get that one dropped), a ’39 banjo wheel, Signalstat, a set of 46 Merc caps (Lance, I told you I was gonna use them for something), a set of ’56 Ford truck wheels (I might need to dig up 2 more of those), and ’50 Poncho tail lights. The dash insert that I got from SoCal for the Auburn dash will be a bit shiny for the beater state but it fits the dash perfectly (maybe I’ll have to throw some dirt on it or something).

Other stuff I have to buy: 5.60 & 7.20 bias plys, gauges, exhaust (I’m thinking just tubing, no mufflers), driveshaft, windshield glass, radiator, shifter, and all the miscellaneous little stuff like wiring, bolts, hoses and stuff . I was thinking of making a steering column but a 40 column with the shifter would be too cool. I’ll have to see if I can dig one of those up.

That’s the plan. I’m excited. Hopefully I’ll be able to cruise this heap to Bonneville.

Well, so much for my fantasies about someday being able to offer you a wheelbarrow-full of cash for your car. Of all of the cars that I've seen here, it's very close to the top of the list of the ones that I'd like to have. Talk about a survivor. As I've already told you, you're very lucky.

Be good to her, and tell her I still love her.

I love that Roadster.
It has got to be my favorite HAMB 32 roadsters. I'm sure it has been eating away at you not being able to wok on it. Your plan sounds good to me. Only thing You might want to consider is the rear tire size, 8.20-15's might fit better.

Seems like another bonus is that you get to build the original chassis up while you still have the car on the road.

Make sure and post pics as you go, I'm sure you can find someone with a digi camera http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don - That sounds like a neat plan. I look forward to seeing both build ups.

It will be bitchin put together with the body the way it is.

Are you going to get it down on the ground like the jive five?

Wow
I can hear her shouting all the way down here in Texas.
How can you concentrate on anything with that waiting in
the wings?

Sounds like a smart plan too.

Boy, no doubt in my mind what would be on the back burner and it would'nt be the roadster. You CA guys have all the luck, shame on you for hiding the deuce and not working on it instead of the Cad. The "Deuce" screams for an early Caddy motor and 50s "Goodies". I wish you all the best!! Part of the reason for putting the roadster on the back burner is the desire to do it "right". When I build up the original chassis it will get the 365 Cadillac engine out of my 57 Coupe de Ville along with a 5 speed and a V8 quick change.

Sounds like a great plan!
When I first saw the thread title my first thought was, "But what about the Caddy?"
working some on both can get both done in the same time frame I think.

Sounds great to me, I'm looking forward to a ride on the salt.

Did you buy a house? Or are you just keeping it at a buds place for now?

Makes perfect sense, do you wish you had thought of it sooner? Another chapter in the roadster's history!
Can't wait to view it on your website.

I bought a a complete 32 rolling chassis from my friend (He went big bucks and bought a "COMPLETE" TCI for about $13k) so he sold me his old one which is ready to go less some rear susp changes I'm doing. My idea was to get my chopped 5 window on the street again after 42 years, That way I could set up my orig they way I wanted and still enjoy the coupe. But then I run into this guy selling roadster bodies, so things have changed again. OH WELL, WHAT THE HELL, however am seriously contemplating the 471 blown 390 with goodies to go in the roadster, if not an alum head 426 Hemi w/EFId Hilborn. Should make it "Scoot" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Davey

Don, I'm with the Jivulous one on this. If you paint it in this iteration, I will consider hurting you. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Sounds like an excellent plan, though. I'm churning on the '36. Bonneville, huh? Wayno

hahahahaha nice try.

I need a favor. Can you tell me the distance in inches between the bottom headlight bar bolts for the 32? I've got a few headlight bars laying around here but I don't know if any are for a deuce.

Thanks,

Don

If it has oval bolt holes it's 32. Model A's have square bolt holes. And I'm pretty sure 33 & 34 pickups didn't have stainless on them, but they may have had the oval holes.

I gold chainer bought a 32 coupe with a 25er on it. He wanted a Rootlieb 3 piece. I paid half the price of a new Rootlieb and he gave me ' His old butt ugly original 25 vent hood'

Don, The Deuce car headlight bar is the only one with the stainless tube in the middle. If it has a hole in the middle, it came with a V8. It has cast ends where the lights mount with a stainless tube between them. It's the only one like it. A commercial H/L bar will fit but it's all cast like a model A.

I suppose this means that you've rejected the idea of selling me that car so it would quit cluttering up your garage. On second glance I see there are flaws in the paint so it's probably just as well, too much work to make it driveable again. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
