View Full Version : question of style
is it possible for one artist to create in more then one style?
or a hot rod guy build a car that doesn't have the same style as everything he's ever built?
why do my cars always end up looking "60's Style"??
I had every intention of building this little truck to a style from an earlier era like 1951 to 1954, but as it evolves it's starting to look like the hot rods that captured my attention as a youth, from a time in the early to mid sixties..say the summer of 1963...or 1964..
An important part of the build is the mock-up, this car has gone together and apart almost daily since I started working on it, this is what it looks like at this moment..

I'm with you Paul, I don't think you can help it.
My '54's got toatally traditional '50's mods but it's gonna get Radirs and thin walls with metalflake. I've seen cars that were built in the '50's but ended up being altered over the years using paint and rolling stock, but their bodies remained essentially the same.
To those that hem and haw about mixing up styles I have to say that it was done back then.
Personally I'm a sucker for '60's style and even early '70's.
Talking of which I still need a pair of 8x15 Chrome slots with a 5x5 bolt pattern.

What's that blue stipe on the door?
Aside from the metalflake wheel, what else on the car screams 60's?

Hi Jeff,
they're a pair of formed plastic cheapo's from the Eames era with the legs pulled out,

What it needs is a set of 15" F150 wheels and a set of narrow WW bias plys.
Then get yourself a set of 64 Corvette hubcaps, which can be purchased from me for a comparatively nominal fee. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Or traded for that monospring

Paul,
I'm not really diggin' the seats, steering wheel, or stripe. Loose those items and your 'era' shifts back about five years. That being said, you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm just some jerk on the internet.

At least you've got style. Your coupe friggin' rocks, and that l'il jalopy looks like it's going to be damn cool too.
Personally, I think I've got the "what the hell is that rusty POS?" style nailed.

'60s,
You an I grew up about the same time. '60s style rods just got in your brain.
Most of what I build has a 60s twist to it and always has.
Note: heavy emphasis on the word twist, I ate the watermelon at Grace Slicks birthday party.
Don't sweat it its just your style, every rod is a reflexion of the builder. You're just a good example of what I been preachin' for ever.
There are h Hot Rodders and there are people who buy and collect cars. You must be a Hot Rodder. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Personally I like it, but what do I know I'm a 60s kid.

Lose the seat, steering wheel, and stripe and it looks like every other RPU around.
Why try to adapt your style? I like it as is.
Besides, if you did it differently you'd have to change your HAMB name.

PS- when ya gonna build the bubble-top for it?

The Brooding Swede knows how much them eames chairs go for.
I just saw one with rockers on the legs go in the $300 range.
Last year the Swede sold about 500 of them and made enough to fund a revolution. Too bad he wasted it all on loose women and ATV's....did I mention he hails from Kentucky? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
60's Style, I'm with Brush....MAN, just let your FREAK FLAG FLY!!!
You seem to take stuff in the right direction....IMHO.
