Hey, I'm about to finish school and head home for the summer and lose my internet access. I know its still a ways away but, before I get disconnected, are there any of you nevada or nor-cal guys that go up to Hot August Nights? If so, I'll put my phone number on my profile. If anyone needs any help or tools or anything while they're there, we can get it done. We have access to a bunch of shops, parts, resources, ect. Or if you just wanna hang out and drink some beers, let me know

As Yogie Berra would say..., "Nobody goes there..., it's too crowded"...! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I have a small group of friends from Wisconsin that make that treck every year! (that's right I have friends..., and I pay good money for them! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
It's a great place to sell your car and possibly find another project. Although most of the cars fall into the finished high dollar bracket..., there are bunch of projects that show up for the fun!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
It's a wild show if you can find a place to stay!

When the mini trucks, fake gang bangers, and muscle car mullet heads started taking over the place, I stepped out- It turned into a 3 ring circus.

You guys quit goin the same time as I did, wasen't any fun watchin yer back all week! Was fun the first ten years, really sucked the last year I went.........OLDBEET
We stopped going in 95, and some friends said that since then it's gotten better so we went up for a day last year and it was worse than ever. A real cluster @#$% Won't waste the gas money on that trip again. Almost as bad as that joke in San Bernardino in September.

I go every year but then I am only a little over an hour away, and I still have a free place to stay. I usuall go mainly for the swap meet. It does have a lot of junk that has nothing to do with cars but I do still find some good deals. got my WWW tires there last year. The big show down Virginia street is kindof lame. If you stick to the smaller shows that are at most of the casinos it is wuite a bit better, not nearly as much BS. The Peppermill and the Hilton both have pretty good shows. Shawn

"it provides an opportunity for those who didn't experience the 50's and '60s firsthand to enjoy the era."
Good Lord... If you survived that, who would want to re-live it? :)

I went one year and one year only. I still have the newspaper article about the riot that started just down the block from where we were standing. The article described how the police had to send out the rubber bullet squad and didn't feel they had control of the streets again until about 4 am. I'll take BTT50's any day.

I went last year, there were several reasons.#1 my wife will let it pass for a real vacation,#2 I had not attended a big auction before,#3 heard the swap meet was good(and it was)
I will not go back this year ,rooms at $189 a night at the peppermill and air fares are not a bargain either. Instead I can visit Vegas for the drags, and have the money left over for Cancun besides.
I was not worried at Reno ,nor was I given any indication that "mini truckers or gangs were any problem".The police seemed to have everything under control as far as I saw.
If your a purist and think that hot rods should all have rust you probably won't like it there.A lot of chrome and flash.

I enjoy going and live only half an hour away.Things have improved the last couple of years since the riot happened and this year it has been expanded to 5500 cars.It has taken me three years to get my truck in so we will wait and see if it was worth it.

It used to be a blast about a decade ago and it would be killer if it regained it's former glory, BUT, as stated in some of the posts above, I whatched it get RETARDED around '94... too many tough guys struttin' around like it was a prison yard and lots of shitty '80's Buick Regals with juice and bad panel jobs. Of course I haven't been back since '96(ish), so maybe it's cool again. I do remember rolling over to the town of Sparks was always a good bet. Lots of cool cars and a real happenin' cruise through the downtown area(if you could call it that). Either way you could gamble your ass off, if that's your thing! ;)

Hi
We are thinking about coming out from New Zealand to go to this event,
our son is racing in Utah ( downhill mountain bike Norba round ) and we could go to both events. What I have seen on the forum puts me off a bit, I'm not into mini trucks and easter eggs, surely there must be some real rods there?
What do you think

Hey 1932tub if you come out here you let me know.I live a half an hour away and I think it is a great event. The swap meet is pretty good and I also do a day or to at the auction as that can be pretty interesting. You can't beat looking at 600 cars in an air conditioned building.Virginia Square is where you want to view the cruise thats the most layed back place.I always stay away from downtown.Don't be turned off by a lot of the replys on this post as you can see by there time frames most of those people haven't been there for quite a few years.:D And believe me there are a lot of Rods.

5500 cars from 36 states and you guys are complaining about having to see a minitruck? by the way they do have a cutoff for cars that can be registered.

check it out I highly reccomend this show. but if you are a tight ass who cant stand to see a car you might not like then dont go. there are so many cars there is something for everyone.

Allow me to toss in my $0.02: What was said about the riot is true. It is also a part of history that has not been repeated since. In fact last summer, cops from East Bay gang units rode with Reno and Sparks PD and collared a bunch of punks before they made any trouble. I work the Sparks Cruise and every year I throw out anyone who tries to sneak in with a '73 or later car. Last summer I bounced a guy driving a 2005 Mustang convertible filled with high school girls. The guy pulled into a gas station parking lot and came at me shouting "I'm going to kick your ass!" He was intercepted by a Sparks cop who moved him back in the direction of his under-aged car. The guy shouted at the cop "He humiliated me in front of my own daughter!" In a commanding voice, the cop said "No, you humiliated yourself when you chose to ignore the pre-1972 rule." The Sparks PD does an excellent job of keeping a lid on things. Of all the display venues, Sparks and the Hilton (Now renamed the Grand Sierra) are the best. Stay out of Virginia Street (downtown Reno) after dark. I add my vote to those who have said the swap meet is good. The Sunday morning parade down Virginia street and under the Reno Arch is worth seeing, at least once. For a couple of years I worked the staging detail up at the Univ of Nevada Parking lot. When all those cars fire up to head out, the soft rumble is what I imagine a WWII bomber base to have sounded like at oh-dark thirty. I now step quietly down from my soap box. ;-)

I've been in Reno 4 years now, had a running car last year. I've taken to just riding my bicycle around to check out the cars because of traffic and all. I'd say maybe 5-10% are worth seeing. And I hope nobody thinks that goofy shit that keeps people away from h.a.n. is indicative of Reno in general. I like it here. Those wierdo's just come in for the weekend. And for the last two years, my friend Walt, with a cool 58 Ford puts on the Anti-Hot August Nights. Just traditional locals, mostly, on the last Saturday of the event at his place on Virginia a little south of downtown.
