I had it all planned out in my head last night, today I was going to swap out the '36 car rearend for the '40s truck rearend for it's stength but more importantly it's open drive.

but now I'm thinking maybe just convert the '36 to open drive..

the truck rearend neads a complete going through but the '36 is in great shape.

can the '36 take the abuse of a slightly warmed over 259 Stude motor?

is this conversion as simple as it looks?

Haven't done the change yet but Paul, wouldn't the 40 ford rear have a lower gearing ratio?? Is that what you want?

Paul -

I have the same situation. I plan to use the 46 p/u ring and pinion with the 36 axles, spiders and housings.

Here is a good post about the swap

36 rear end to 46 p/u open drive (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=197022&Forum=A ll_Forums&Words=36%20REAR&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Se archpage=1&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=196230&Searc h=true#Post197022)

Keep us posted on how you do it.

NealinCA,
thanks that was very helpful, after opening up the truck rear I see it looks ok, I will try to swap out the whole center section from the truck and use the '36 axle tubes..

Remember you need to use the 36 spiders with the 36 axles.

They are a different tooth count than the 46.

What ratio is you 46 open drive? I have a 3.78, but would like a 4.11. I would like to trade if someone needs the 3.78?

ratio is a moot point http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

upon closer investigation I see the truck ring and pinion are worn beyond acceptable standards..

I could use the Stude rearend, it would mean I could just shorten the drive shaft and use the domed wheels off the Dodge to match the look of the fronts,

but I want a Banjo dammit!

If your 36 gears look good, you could go with the "Smokey Open Drive Conversion" (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB4&Number=78277&Forum=Al l_Forums&Words=SMOKEY&Match=Username&Searchpage=0& Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=77243&Search=true#Post7 8277)

A handy guy like you should be able to whip that out in an afternoon http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I doubt that there is any strength difference at all between Ford rears between 1935 and 1948, or even back to the first straddle mount ones. There are minor variations in splines and spiders, but that's about it. What's the purpose of open drive here, to get a trans with more ratios?
Either rear should easily handle non-violent driving with the Stude.

thanks guys, yeah Bruce it's so I can use the Stude transmission..

the strength question was because I see the larger axle housings on the truck rear and the skinny ones on the car.

I swapped out the center section and ring from the truck rear.

all parts are assembled for fit but it needs a new ring and pinion set.

I got a good open centre of 4.11 ratio and would like a 3.78.

Freight to Australia is expensive - but I have a friend coming to visit me in May, from OR if thats a help.

Can he pack a ring and pinion back and forth?

I have noticed the banjo is stamped with the gear ratio, do we need to trade those parts as well? Or will your 4.11 gears fit in my center section and visa versa?

How do your gears look? We might be able to work something out.

Its best to swap centres, as the we don't have to re-set it all up again.

I can only ask my friend if he is willing to bring one over and one back in his luggage.

If he is willing to carry the stuff down and back and then ship back to me, I am up for a trade.

Let me know.
