View Full Version : A few Oldsmobile engine questions.
I have a 324 that had an amateur rebuild. I pulled a few of the valves and they are a bit sloppy, can the valve guides be pressed out and replaced on the Olds motors??
If so where can I get guides??

It's best that you take it to a machine shop that does heads. the guides can be replaced, but let them do it and hone to fit the valve stems & etc.

knurling the valve guides is a lot cheaper/easier,and works just fine.you might wanna take a micrometer to those valve stems though,i was gonna re-use my intakes until i realized the stems were worn about -.005-6 apiece-george

Knurling and new push rods should do the trick...! If you already have it apart..., you should do a good 3 angle Valve job with hardened seats to handle the unleaded gas.
Just as an ounce of prevention while it's apart will save you headaches later.

If you do take the heads off..., mic the cylinder walls and check for run out and for a ridges..., these might give you more problems as the valves seal better the old rings will create blow-by.
It's amazing how one cure to a certain problem will cause other problems! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Good Luck!

Thanks guys,
Ill drop the heads off at a friends machine shop and mic. the bores. Someone has already honed the cyl's and installed 3 new STD. bore pistons....but who knows if they knew what they were doing.
