My old boss was telling me about his first car...sez it was some sort of early 60s Pontiac wagon with a four cylinder that he called "a 389 V8 cut in half" and a transaxle in the REAR???
Has he been breathing the fumes from his Mini Cooper too long, or did they make such an abortion?
(And, no...I don't WANT one...but it'd be cool to SEE one if it was for real! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif)
I reckon that would be an early 60's Tempest wagon. They had that kooky half a V8 / transaxle set up.
M/Thompson used that engine at Bonnville. in a what was basically a FED with a liner body.
Look here at it. http://www.thompson-motorsports.com/attempt.html
The Tempest Transmission was a modification of and similar to the Corvair Transaxle.
My Aunt bought one new, but she never kept cars long...She even traded in my Uncle's 50 Chevy pick up for a new pick up while he was at work. He wnet back to the dealer and bought it back because he liked that old pickup with the '57 Olds J2 he put under the hood http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
hacksaw, pontiac indeed did make a 195 cubic inch 4 cylinder engine that was basically based on the early 389. the factory horse power ranged from 110-166. these were manufactured from 1961-1963 and are good reliable engines and dr.j beat me to the M/T info. not only did micky build 4 cylinder stuff but he cut a 4 in half once, and built a 2 cylinder front engine dragster and broke all types of records at march air field.

Here's a Tempest 195-cube 4-banger that has been built for a '63 Lemans convertible. These engines suffered from balance problems, I guess you have to expect that when you remove half the rods and pistons from a V8. They shook so bad that they often cracked the accessory brackets. They used a special heavy-duty timing chain set that was and still is coveted by Pontiac V8 performance builders, good luck finding one these days. A Super Duty version with 11:1 compression was produced in '62 that made 184 horses with a 4-barrel carb. More sedate 166 HP 4-barrel and 110/115/120/140 HP 1-barrel versions were also made that year.

This was the crook's car in My Cousin Vinny. Remember the reference to independent rear? The driveshaft was the mosat unique, a 1" solid shaft with an intentional 5* bend in the middle. Here's a forum http://forums.performanceyears.com/eve/ubb.x?a=frm&s=7286011111&f=3246078811

I used to have a 62 LeMans, 4bbl., 4 speed transaxle, 15" x 4" wheels, squirmed all over the road on the radials that came on it, put bias ply trailer tires on tracked perfect. I could smoke the tires almost all the way through 2nd.
Some bizzare combo The great Fat Hack has not seen?????

The driveshaft wasn't solid, it was a wound cable, like a speedometer cable...or one of those MII steering couplings that are prone to break....
No, hack, you really don't want to put one of these setups in your chevy...
