I read a the new smokin shutdown magazin - there is a nice article about several old style cars and questions to the owners - one of the questions was: what has been the longest trip ever you made with this car --- and that makes me wondering - the most ownes said about 150 to 400 miles one way --- that's not a lot --- -- my longest trips with the roadster last year were 900 miles to germany and about 700 to italy one way
-----------witch was your longest trip???

One trip in my '47 Chevy ragtop, May/June 2000, 21 days,
Detroit, MI to San Berdo, CA to Panama City Beach, FL then back to Detroit. 6,400 miles
The longest to date is roughly 600 mile's one way.
I had a pretty much stock '66 Impala SS that i drove to the 'James Dean Run' in Indiana back in '95.
That totaled around 1400 miles in 4 days.
The next closest was last year, i drove my '33 pick up down to York Pa. total of around 800 miles in 4 days..
Thats not all that much i guess..but the ride in the truck felt like 10,000 miles.
Anyone one who has ridden in it with me would understand.
It's channeled 9"..

800-900 miles 12-14 hours in a hot rod isn't too bad. I've done it many times. Make sure the ergonomics are right and you'll enjoy it.

Idaho Falls, Idaho to Philadelphia, Penn and back in the old 73 Chevy pickup if that counts in 4 days. Took me about that long to get my gas pedal foot to stop hurting. I'm a believer in cruise control now.
I make a few trips over 1100 miles each way in the Chevelle every year. I put about 350 on it just today and wound up right back where I started. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A thousand miles in a day is a pretty good shot. I have done that a few times in my roadster.
I went on an extended trip in 1997, about six weeks or so. Took in the LA Roadster's show, Americruise and the Street Rod Nationals, in addition to a bunch of other events. The west and east of the trip were the Pacific and Atlantic oceans near San Diego and Boston, respectively. About ten thousand miles on the car. Did I mention it was a BLAST?

Hmmm... the longest trip I've taken was in '02. Coast-to-coast and back, about 6,400 miles in 3weeks. That included an Americruise, Speedweek, Vegas & Pasedena.
Last year it was 2,700 miles in 4days out to Rocky & Grimlock hauling parts and back.
If you enjoy driving your car a little, imagine how much fun it is to drive it A LOT!

Gonna do it again this year in the 52 rag but from B'ville we are going northwest through Nevada, Orgeon, Washington, British Colombia, Alberta, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Home to Wisconsin.
Should be a blast, Me and Maggie in the chopped 52 rag and a bud and his wife in their newly built 49 Olds vert out of Iowa. Kind of an adventerous break in run, EH ??

Somwhere in Illinois....... already covered about 3,000 miles in the first week. Total trip was over 8,500 miles in less than four weeks. And to ensure it wasn't easy..... I was riding shotgun for most of the trip. Although to get this shot, I had to run alongside holding my camera to my eye. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My two longest trips were both in 2002, driving the chopped '48 Chevy p/u.
Calgary to Winnipeg to Minneapolis (BTTFs) then home, around 3200 miles in 10 days.
Then Fargoguy and I drove it the 1000 miles to Bonneville in August in 17 hours.
Back in 1995 my wife and I drove our T-bucket 1500 miles in 9 days, hitting runs in Kalispell Montana and the 25th anniversary run in Yellowstone.

Last week I went 200 miles round trip & thought I was going to need a kidney transplant along with back surgery. A flathead powered '35 pickup w/ stock running gear (3:78 rear end now......thank God!) & Coker WWs (non-radials) makes for tough long distance traveling. The way the hiways are maintained (not) in Oregon I now have a true appreciation for bump steer. While I was in the Navy I traveled accross country (coast to coast) four times driving my Suzuki Samurai. I love my '35 pickup, but I think she would have to be shipped before I would try that with her, unless I had lots of time to get there and recover!
Hey Carps, who was driving DRD's coupe in that picture? It kinda looks like Claude Raines http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
Santa Rosa to Bonneville and return, 1300-plus miles, four times in a roadster. Santa Rosa to San Diego to Idylwild and return, 1400-plus miles in my roadster. Santa Rosa to Los Angeles and return, 980-plus miles, four times in a roadster, with a Burbank to Santa Rosa return trip of 420 miles in a Pacific Coast frog-drowner the entire distance. Damn, that was a great trip! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I've driven my Buick to alot of places in the west--Moab a few times and to the Leadsled in Wichita in 2000. It is much more comfortable than a hot rod (I don't know how you hot rod guys do it--especially the chopped and channelled cars), but it is still running the old nailhead and Dyna-Flush tranny. I've put over 30,000 miles on it since I bought it in '99 and it sits all winter.
My longest trip in it was last year to Paso. Went just over 3700 miles in about 10 days. Getting ready to do it again. I'm not sure if I'm taking the '62 or my Ford wagon this time. I guess it just depends on how much I get done to the wagon in about the next month or so. We'll see.
Me and a cousin took a spur of the moment trip from WV to FL once, about 950 miles. This was in a beat-ass 83 Caddy Seville (the ones with the funky back). This was a $400 car, we had just gotten the windows to roll up and down again, and I pulled the radio from my car to put in it so we'd have something to listen to.
It was a fast trip, we made it in 12 hours, where it's typically 14, and we accidently went 200 miles the wrong way. It was a very comfortable car, easy to drive, and comfortable seats even though they were broken and locked into position.
Drove it for a week down there, and on the way back it started over heating. We'd go for 200 miles and stop, then 100, then 50... until by the time we were back in WV, it would only run for 5 minutes before cooking over. It was 3am, we were both tired, and were gonna blow it up if that's what it took to get home. I figured the head gasket was blown (aluminum block with iron liners, complete junk design), but it turned out the radiator just needed flushed. Needless to say, my boy got his $400 worth out of her.
Fun trip, I really enjoyed it.

The longest in time and mileage has to be in 1975 in my old 35 Buick 2dr with a 390 Cad.
From NH to Niagra Falls, and then a stop in Cleveland, down to experience Nashville and into the NSRA Nats in Memphis. The return took me to see my folks in Hendersonville, NC, then to the Outer Banks and then back home which included a trip up Broadway in NYC on a Sunday morning.
This was with my wife and 5 & 2 year old sons.
Time elapsed was 2 weeks, I have no idea of the mileage.
The Buick performed without a hitch and that huge back seat area was a playground. Since trunk space was a minimum I outfitted with a flea market luggage rack (off a 30's Packard) and big steamer trunk.
The 53 Vicky has made two 10 day trips to the Canadian Maritimes and the 68 Impala SS-396 ragtop has made similar 10-14 day trips including one entering at Niagra and continuing to Newfoundland.
Since I include my family, large comfortable cars with plenty of trunk space are mandatory.
My ultimate goal before I croak is a full USA tour in a 40-48 Cad 60S or limo with a 472/500. That would tow the 26T coupe which would rumble and lope into HAMB style meets.
I'd have to hide the restorod Cad far away!

Did a fairly long trip about five yrs ago, borrowed an old Caddy in LA that hadn't been run for a few yrs, fixed it up a little & was dubious about even going as far as we planned
as it still had no fuel gauge, temp guage, no heater & only half a dipstick.
Headed out through Arizona...New Mexico...visiting Clovis then on to Lubbock, from there to Memphis & Nashville, heading back we stopped Columbia MO & decided a non stop run to Las Vegas in time for the all Harley Drags....22hrs & roughly 1600 miles later we made it, went to the drags & spent the next day in bed ill.......exhausted!!
Finally back in LA 3wks & 6,000 miles later with no major faults, & that Caddy ran better after every mile we clocked up.

In 1990 I drove to Panama, took a cargo ship (ferry) to Brazil, drove all over Brazil for a few months. Then I made the trek to Tierra del Fuego just to say I'd done it, back up to Columbia, back through Brazil and on another boat to Florida, then back to Houston. I think the total trip was around 42,000km - or 26k miles. I did it in a 1967 Volkswagen bus - the early style. Not a hot rod, but still a vintage car that I built myself.
Highlights of the trip: Driving into Brazilia, standing at the end of the road on an island very close to the southern tip of the Americas, and purchasing a new VW head at the corner quickie mart in Porto Alegre, eating fabulous grilled beef untill it came out my ears, and generally being exposed to aspects of the world that folks in the US aren't taught about.

a couple of years out of high school i had a chopped and channeled 32 pick-up , decided to go to speed week, then nor-cal pleasenton ect its 2,100 from mn to santa rosa , i think its about 5 something to LA , did that back and forth 3 or 4 times cant remember, so thats between 2-3000 miles , then going back i took the long way home about 3,500 miles, plus all the sight seeing i think was about 10,000 miles total in 2-3 weeks
i did it by myself , broke down twice, once was fairly serious, and required the removal of a head to replace a valve that got sheared north of the keeper, luckly i had the n.s.r.a. fellow pages and a rodder rep had a garage he let me use in wyoming, and hooked me up with a machinist friend on a sunday no less, i was on the road in 6 hrs, the other was just a broken rocker i had to replace a 100 feet or so from the mexican boarder at 2 am(la migra wasa curious what i was doing, and hung out long enough to give me a scare....quote"90-95% of the illegles are good people , but some will slit your throught for a nickle... be careful" end quote...guess he figured i wasnt a coyote cause no-one would fit in the truck
i was scared as hell when i left, but came back with many new friends and knowledge
-i have had nothing but good experiences and respect for the n.s.r.a. types, found most to be extreemly nice and generous(those that are true car guys)
- taking a 3.73 geared high 12-low 13 sec. chopped and channeled 32 p/u 10,000 miles is not the best idea , but you will come back with lots of storys and be deaf and crippled for a month later
- be prepared in your budget for gas prices gettin lots higher than where your from (i slept almost a week in that truck cause of this and breaking down)
breaking down and not knowing whats gonna happen its part of the fun!!!!!!its about the journy.........gave me a profound respect for covered wagon days and the whole grapes of wrath deal, i had paved roads (kinda) my trip from hell was nothing in comarision to what these people went through
- im dumb enough to do it all over again if i ever get the chance it still wouldnt be the same as the first though

So far my longest has only been 500 miles or so (to the HAMB drags last summer)...Not very long and I'm still young and stupid enough to endure a really long (maybe slightly painfull..?!?!?) trip sometime in the near future. I do a lot of 2 hour one-way trips back n forth to college, but that doesn't really count...
All you guys talking about cross country trips makes me wanna do one REALLY bad this summer. I have just one more semester of college left and I really need to work fulltime all summer so I can afford it....but I REALLY wanna do an extended road trip over the summer.

probably had the best holiday of my life, not long after I got the 5 window on the road. 2 months, 7000 miles, drove from the east coast here to the west coast here and back using my hot rod everyday, to spend time with family and great hot rod friends. Can never remember a time when I have been at most peace with the world than on those long stretches in the middle of Australia just me and my hot rod!. Of course since then the coupe has been all up and down the east coast here as well as nine 1800 mile trips to the salt ( but each of those is a story in itself) to push our race car, the last 3 or so with a lil teardrop in tow. Longest stint behind the wheel 22 hours. I am not one to stop and look at the sights. But me and the coupe have done it all, I think it is one of my best friends!

thirtytwo, that ain't dumb. That is just showing you enjoyed what you did. I did a similar trip to the west coast here a couple of years ago in my '55 F100 daily driver, hauled back a '29 coupe body. As you said nothing like doing a big trip in something you built, knowing that you can repair most stuff that might confront you. And another aspect is that you are letting people see and old vehicle that they may not have otherwise seen. We are all ambssadors for this car thing. Anyone can do it in a late model!!!

The longest trip in my chopped 55 Olds was to the Leadsled Spectacular in Springfield, MO, from NJ. About 1800 miles, one way. Drove out for the weekend, and came back home, but took a longer route home, to do some sightseeing. About 4000 miles in 6 days.
Hmmm... let's see, I'd have to say either riding my old RD400 cafe racer from NC to Daytona, with clip-ons and rearsets, I was 18 and had to go see the races during bike week. The ride home sucked. or... circling the country in a early 70's purple dodge van with dingo balls and 2 out of 4 bandmates that I didn't like.... or babysitting the Flat Duo Jets for 4 months on the road, inumerable miles and headaches... These probably aren't the farthest I've driven but damn they seemed that way...

I did Memphis to Orlando in 94, was about 2600 miles in a shit box rental Olds... Windshield wiper fell off when I turned it on as I left the rental lot! Took it back, and they replaced it, seems as I was dropping it off in Orlando, they didn't want to rent a 'decent' car!
Was a trip tho, took in Graceland, Sun Studios, Tupelo (where Elvis was born). All the way to New Orleans, and then along the coast to Florida. Visited the air base where the Blue Angels are homed. Went to the Gartlits Museum in Ocala, as well as Daytona.
Spent 3 days in Orlando & then flew back to the UK.
I was over here for a month in total, the 1st two weeks I spent in CA, did over 3000 miles as well, so in all, it was the best part of 6000 miles. CA was fun, went to Pomona for the Drags, Petersen Museum (had just opened that summer) and the Otis Chandler museum in Oxnard, before he sold the cars & got into bikes.

I put about 700 miles on the Buick last Labor Day weekend... from Houston to the folks' place in Mexia (proud hometown of Anna Nicole Smith! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif), Mexia to Plano for Pistons-n-Paint'03, back to Mexia for the night, Mexia to Austin for Lake Travis debauchery, then back to Houston. Aside from that, too many weekends between Houston and Austin to count!
In the summer of '94 my bro and I drove the Alaska Highway in a rental Mazda. He rented it in Austin and drove it up to Calgary... I flew into Calgary and we spent 11 days driving the highway before I flew out of Fairbanks. Afterwards, he drove up into the Artic Circle, took a snapshot or two, then turned around and headed back to Austin... 13,000 miles in a little less than 6 weeks, and the car was useless when he returned it.

I used to drive my '59 Chev BelAir from San Francisco to Cincinnati on leave - had to trade it in after a straight through trip because the motor died. But I got a '61 Pontiac Ventura bubbletop for a new car and was VERY happy.
Most of the trip was on the old Mother Road - the Interstate was being built then.
Longest trip (not in a hot rod) was from 1995 to 1998 when I was touring the country - 88,000 miles in the motorhome with my roadster in tow.

On the way out to Utah I was running with two other woodies, we cruised at around 80. We came up on an old hippie driving an early VW bus, bunper stickers all over it, must've been doing about 40. Our voyage then took us to the Hot rod tattoo convention in NYC. This was in 2001 we left there on 9-11 at 3am. We woke up in philly, and saw the news. Man did we haul ass the rest of the way home, listenin to the news all the way. When we left kansas my car had maybe 100 miles on it, boy were those first 200 mile stressful. I drive that bitch as much as I can now and have no doubts in her making it anywhere I wanna go. See ya all in Paso

in one stretch only 280 miles.....stopped for gas once (no gas gauge) that is what it takes to get from school to home. drove to the brickyard 400 last august....220 each way and did it all in one day. left at 3 am and got home at 1am. not bad for a 42 yearold bottom end and rear and tranny and drums.

Did not know you then but I sure did. You stuck out a little with a sign on the door of your last car! I have been on five Power Tours and two long hauls. Doing the long haul this year again. I was hoping to stay up there for a week after and do BTT50's but it looks like that might not work now.

I've done 3 PT, twice doing the long haul. I won't be on it this year but my dad will in his two tone blue '56 Olds. He's doing the whole thing from TX to WI. If you see him please go up and introduce yourself. His drivetrain and suspension is a work of art. He'd love to show it to you.

Around 84 85 my brother and I drove from Macan Gorgia to Fremont California in a 65 Corvair, 19 hours the first day made it to Witchata Falls Texas. Got to see the Mississippi for the first time and it was all mud. Two flats and and one burned valve but we made it.
I have driven my 48 coupe from Portland to Bakersfield and back and also to Paso and back and Pleasanton and back and Paso and back and BP and back and drive it to the coffe shop and back. I guess I drive it back and forth a lot....Danny

Back in '93 I was returning stateside from the UK, I was in the Air Force. Anyways, I brought an old Mini Clubman wagon back with me. I had it shipped I should say. Drover her from the docks in NJ to Las Vegas, NV where I was getting stationed. Matt black, of course! Had a tuned 1300cc with a straight pipe. Stopped in MI to visit the folks.
It was really funny. First off it was in Jan and it was a blizzard in the NE. So I was snowed in for a day. Then when I went to the docks, I was told the car had to be towed off the ship. So we went out and I said, well let me give it a crank so I can start to diag. So sit down and two dock workers that were with me were standing outside and I pull the choke.... Whats that they ask!?? Well, needless to say she fired right off! After MI I took the southern route through TX, NM and AZ into NV. Pretty uneventful, replaced the vacuum advance in MI and filed the points in AZ.
Fun cars!
