HEY!...smart guys and gals...computer question

....this is nothing earth shattering,but in my quest to join the 1990's, I thought I would ask. When you copy and paste an address from your browser, how do you change it to something shorter? You know....instead of "www.blahblahblahblah.com" it might read "stuff" with the underline or whatever. This making sense?
