Well Bob , ill teel ya what its been busy here the last few weeks just thinking bout this here HAMBer car thing.
The crew here at Bubbas have been workin overtime just gettin it done. Beings as the shop dont have heat we only work on warm days ( dry ones that is). We did get the rear axle done last week and uncle cletus is pissed as we stole the rear end out of his 58 Edsel. Our women bought us a set of them Coker tires for christmas and we found this 37 Morris frt axle laying in a neighbors yard.
This ole GMC truck motor came all the way from tennesse and was in uncle otis's log truck. He said it ran really good hauling logs up the mountain. I have been busy working on the dragster tow vehicle.
Ill send more pics as the time allows and we get the frame rails welded up. Scooter is gone now to borrow some welding rod, got any 6013 rod for my lincoln welder???:) :)
Oh yea we may need to fix that brazed up hole in the oil pan, uncle otis missed a shift going up the mountain with a load of logs and said the tach went over 8,000 before a rod left the area! He blamed it on the Howard roller camshaft. Said he would never run a roller cam in a log truck ever again.

Looks like it will Christmas soon and the neighbor is going out of town.
Then we can steal his kids swing set for tubing on our dragster. Pretty cool stuff ( already powder coated green) , lots of spare material and Tom thinks the slide will make one hell of a seat.
Should be light enough to braze and run.
Uncle Otis just called from Tennessee and boy is he pissed! He just found out that GMC engine is missing, I had to promise him a used flathead ford and a rambler bumper to get him calmed down!!

Well another one of them ther holidays is coming up and i can get some more work on the dragster. Lindross wire brushed the tubing from the neighbors swing set just like Tom C told him to and he did a good job. Cost me 6 moon pies, a pint of Knob Creek and breakfast at the Waffle House but it was worth every penny.
I got to loking inside this old truck motor and it has some wierd parts. The lifters has some odd shaped little rollers on the bottom ( i guess they just wore that way ?) and the ignition coil ( called a rev-pol) has more wires than usuall to hook up. I jumped to a battery and turned it and lindross said it felt pretty good to him although it made his arm hurt a little bit!!
I guess i am going to run em but those pistons musta swelled up a bit at the top as they stick out of the block just a tad and for somereason Uncle Otis must have put some Ford valves in the head. Must have be really rusty as they appear to have been ground out a lot until its pretty smooth in there.
I borrowed some black rustoleum and painted the engine ( didnt want to work real hard on cleaning it up) adding some engine hardner from eastwood and let it spray!
We made us up a oil pump drive rod out of another old distributor and put it in a drill. Oil shot to the far wall from two or three holes , i guess thats good pressure ? Lindross measured the farthest the oil squirted and it was damn near 25 feet. Best i can figure thats 50-60 psi , shes a keeper.
Well got to go now and get those old afb carbs cleaned up a little. Using sno-bowl from the doller store, man does it clean up a carb.
Uncle Otic is mifed aboth them too, they came off another old truck motor he had laying around ( said 409- 425 hp on the valve covers) he was going to use them on his racin chain saw before i found them.
Well maybe we can fire this beast us next week and have lindross video the start up for you guys, as i dont know much bout them video things. :) :)

Another update. Tom C and Pete came by the shop yeaterday and picked up the tubing and i had Mike drove the rear end assembly off last night on his way home. Pete came back and picked up the little 37 Morris front axle and springs later in the day.
WOW , the are on the throttle! I stopped by after lunch today and here is the progress already , Tom had me set in the chair to see how wide he needed to make the rail for my big ass. The semi elipitical front springs are pretty cool as well. The springs go back into the 3 inch tubing and we have the rear axle on top the lower tube. ( havent noticed anyone doing this so far ????)
Walt and I test fired the motor today and holy shit does it sound good. A few carb bugs but still has one hell of a lope and hits the rpms right away. Walt demanded that we strap the engine to the big old steel roller cart. ( made for detroit diesels).
Tom want the engine right away and i just need to change the bell housing to a blow proof and mount up another high torque starter motor.
In the interest of time we just used a old gmc truck housing and starter today without a clutch.
Got a few more tricks up our sleeves but share them later.
No one has really spec-ed out their car on the builder forum but we will show it all before we are done. Hope all of it works like we think it will???:D

Funny thing about engines , they are blind and stupid. They dont really know if they are in a car or on the floor. Just add spark, fuel and some proper timing and they will run.:)
Other than a couple ( fixable) carb problems the engine sounded very good. Bill and Walt each ran a carb and i ran the starter and ignition. Pretty picture huh. The osha folks would have loved it .:D :D

I agree there nothing more bonding in a friendship than a engine running on the floor sharing responsibilities with friends. One dude is the fuel guy, the other is the timing dude and one other is in charge of the starter and ignition switch ( thats a wire holding on the jumper cables) Another dude is raising and lowering the garage door to thin out the fumes!!:) :)
We all went to the Indy swap meet today and found some neat dragster shit. A Model A emergency brake handle ( hand brakes) and
a composite Tilson master cylinder ( Tom says i either got to off set some weight or quit eating them damn Waffle House Cheeze Eggs and Waffles, cant quit the eggs so lets lighten the car. I figure the plastic Tilson unit will let me down another couple dozen waffles ??
):) Also picked up one of them killer little gear reduction starters, can't imagine one of those little shits cranking this big ole motor with some compression added but lets think waffles here!!
Tom said i need to come by tomorrow and look at the cage ( they bent and welded it up yesterday) and if i would bring the engine by early this week it would be done by thursday. I guess at this time you all have figured none of us ole guys sleep much. I think the theory is if ya got to get up and pee every night might as well work on the car while yer up??
Will put some more pics up tomorrow afternoon , gotta go now I am working on Waffle Steak for a sponsorship!!
What ya think, free waffles from Indy to Mokan wouldnt cost em a bunch ??? We dont use maps any more we use wafflequest.com . Just travel from Waffle House to Waffle House.

Tuesdays update:
Missed my Waffle House cheese eggs this morning because i had to come in early and get this Jimmy done for Tom.
Pete ( the welder) is havein a fit because i dont have the motor over there. If they cant do a car a week Pete gets upset so i came in early and got er done!!
Makes a Bubba grouchy without them cheeze - eggs .
The chassis cage is pretty much done and i do need one more fittin session with the new seat. ( came out of the same combine as the steering box.)
Had DB ( DB Sprinters ) make us up a couple bars and a tie rod and we got them on the front end today.
I think Toms got er figured out where everything is goin to fit etc. I still need to get the combine steering wheel cleaned up so we can fix up a wheel.
Maybe tomorrow we can get it on the wheels .
I think Toms come up with a great idea on motor mounts that would allow the motor to be jacked up and just roll the chassis back for repairs etc. Seems that the way it was done. (once upon a time)
By now we have all captured Ryans orginal goal of " The Spirit of The Bug" and are using only pre 1962 stuff ! (even pre-62 people) Tom even found some old welding rod to do the chassis up with.
You know that old 6013 rod will keep forever in a old fridge and a light bulb for heat.

Thanks we like the word "professional" .:)
In reality i have been more than blessed with a ton of friends that just happen to share my vision of having fun with cars.
Our hot rod shop ( Bubbas Hot Rod Shop) just happended as i have another building away from my main business (Linder Fuel Injection) on Gasoline Alley in Indianapolis. Gasoline Alley as well as Indys west side is a dream place for car junkies as there are tons ( too many to count) metal fab shops etc in this area. Many of which are not only "old school" they are just plain old guys still hammering metal etc.
Tom Culberson ( Culberson Customs) is also on the west side. Tom can turn a car out using almost no resourses quicker than anyone i have ever seen. He is the magic on our dragster !
The problem is ( yes it can be a problem) is that anything you can imagine can and does happen on the alley. Want a part , there is more than likely a guy that can make it and get it done today.
Our dragster is a combo of that talent !!!
Me? I just had the vision provided by you guys at mo-kan last year and some ole stuff laying around. We ran the single engine flathead dragster and had a ball.
Hopefully all you guys will attend our Bubbas Trailer Park " Spam-a -rama at goodguys Indy this year.
We have two events set for the Goodguys event and would like to have all the hambsters on display at each. Friday evening is the spamarama at Bubbas Trailer Park and Sat is open house cookout at Culbersons Customs. Both will be a jam packed event with tons of all kinds of cars etc.
You coming to Indy for this event??

Shes a roller !! Took Tom the rod ends and some other little stuff yesterday . The hambster is on its wheels! WOW, these guys are gettin it done.
Tom fitted the steering shaft and seat to me yesterday and i need to get by the belt guys shop today and get some belts so they can finish the seay and blet mounts etc.
Pretty cool, the GMC is set back quite a bit and i still have tons of room setting in the car.
Looks like everything is pretty much servicable on the car and it is amazing how simple the car really is!
Setting in the car gives ya a bit of a rush when you think that everything on this car is pre 1962. In reality all the parts could have been aquired in 1957 ! The " Spirit of the Bug" is pretty realistic on this ride.
Next ? Is the body and brakes and then back to my shop for tear down paint etc. I have some basic idea on paint scheme and graphics .
More to come as the week goes on.

Well i didnt really get much done today with the dragster. One of those days i guess, Tom got some more stuff done with the throttle linkage ( some cool mechanical rods etc) The gas petal, brake handle ( model a ford) and steering wheel are all hand made by Tom. He made a really neat butterfly steering wheel and 29Sedanman picked it up to make the little wood handle inserts.
I picked up my new set of seatbelts and harness stuff today and took them to Toms and found out they didnt have any hardware with them. Got to go back tomorrow. Also picked up our driveshaft tunnel tube ( a six inch by 10 inch long 1/4 inch steel tube) Tom thinks it is too heavy!
Didnt get the header tubes bent today as the muffler shop dudes machine broke yesterday. May be mid week before we get them done.
The entire vehicle looks like it just rolled out on a street in 1959 or so. I will get some more pics tomorrow morning after breakfast and get them up for the week end.

Some detail pics of the HA/GR car.
The throttle linkage is pure mechanical ( no cables) with a toe strap to be added for extra release if needed. Brakes use a tilson cylinder and a model A brake handle. Rear view shows cage construction and cage shot shows head placement for helment at back.
Front view shows the Morris front beam axle ( 19 inch wire wheels) and elipical springs. Gonna ( is that a word :) ) make a single front shock center mounted next week. Steering is a Tom C work of art with a Crossley box and home made ( torch cut) drag link etc. Intake is a two four homemade unit out of a rectangular piece of steel, thin wall.

We have an old three speed ( short trans) out of a truck. May only use high gear?
From what i have read the 270 is a torque monster as well as the 302. I read somewhere that the 270 would take a huge bore job.

Went by Toms shop today and he has got the body looking killer. We decided that i already had some aluminum from my teardrop trailer shop ( www.bubbastrailerpark.com (http://www.bubbastrailerpark.com)) that we should make the body out of aluminum. We used .052 material. Tom rolled out the top and both sides with a small bead at the top and a large triangle bead on each side . Pretty cool , changed my mind about painting the car, i think we will just polish the skin and decal it from there.
We only have a couple things to add before tear down and paint the chassis etc. Got to get a fuel tank , fuel pump and seat belt hardware. 29Sedanman had the steering wheel ( homemade butterfly) putting wood grips on it. he does good work and kinda volunteered to do them.
Check out the old mailbox for a air cleaner. The News hasnt been in business for some time in Indy so that fits the spirit as well.

A couple of pics. Tom has a dragster than we ran at Mo-Kan last year. Seems the half moon mounts are a period thing. A hose clamp or two actually holds the engine plates to the frame in a couple spots. Found a pic of one of Garlits frames and thats the way they did it back then.
Makes all the sense in the world, for service just raise the engine with a jack and roll the car backward for clutch etc.??

The hamster is home and ready to be taken apart and painted. Color will be a secret for a day or two. Got some clutch work to do and a bug or two in the carbs. Accell pumps didnt seem to work like they should when we lit the engine last week or so.
We are on a two week deadline for the world of wheels car show in Indianapolis. It will be there finished or not. Would love to fire it up in the building once just for grins..:) :) :)
Thats me in the car with "Grumpy" one of the crew.

Bubba,, Are those front wheels the english Anglia wheels??? I have a set of Harley rims laced to a hub for early Ford spindles. Look quite a bit alike. I was going to take the spoke wheels off my altered and put them on the HA/GR, then put front-runners on the altered. But I just might use the harley wheels

English Anglia is close on the wheels. The wheels and front axle, springs and hubs are from a 1932 Morris. Morris made a scaled sown 32 Ford style sedan in 1932-1933. The picture below is a 1933. Pretty cool stuff the chassis ( i bought a rolling chassis at a swap meet a few years ago- it was cheap and had tons of cool parts ) used a aluminum rear end third member, fluid shocks on all four courners and tranferse spring front and rear. It also had new sears allstate tires. I still have the little differential and springs if any one can figure a need for it. We used the entire front end and springs.
Cliff ( The dog catcher) has the dragster frame as we stripped it down today and trailered the chassis to him. Knowing him, it may be done tomorrow sometime. He came over and helped us take it apart, only took a few minutes.
The pic shows Cliff hard at work.
The trans tunnel, sides, cowl and belly pan all are pretty easy to get off with the quick release fastners.
Other than a little clutch final fitting and some engine work we should have it ready for the Indy world of wheels. In Two weeks.

Except that you probably got the last set of wheels in the entire US of A, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a set with hubs. I have some reason to believe that the hubs may fit Anglia spindles. Dream on.

The front end is complete now, Steering is operable, The rearend is mounted, Master cylinder is on and brake handle hooked up. I will be tearing the rear apart to install the spool this next week. And installing the brake lines. Since I'm the only one working on the car it takes a bit longer. Bubba,
We were actually going to us the steering wheel/yoke??? out of a B-24 on our car but it was a little tight around our knees so we couldn't use it. It was cool......had a button on top of the right hand grip that was to drop the bombs, but it would work great for our nitrous system.
Now I have to find somewhere to hide the damn nitrous switch so you guys won't see it.

We have had the car back from the painter most of the week and it looks really good. Decided the aluminum body is too nice to paint Mikes been polishing on it most of the week Rear brakes are done ( Thanks to Wally) . We adjusted the clutch ( had to do some machine work on the throw out etc) using a chevy flywheel ( redrilled for the GMC) and a early ford clutch and pressure plate. Gas tank is mounted as well as all the wheels, Just decided this afternoon to use moon caps front and rear, they look really good and Tuck next door made us some neat clamps to hold the front moons on the wires.
Wally, 29 Sedanman and i put the engine in the chassis before i left work and Little Bill ( the pinstriper) is coming tomorrow for lettering etc.
The new gear reduction starter turns the jimmy over pretty well and i had to light it with carb cleaner just to hear it run through the new headers. I have a lot of pics and just havent had time to post them , maybe tomorrow sometime. Shes a beauty!!!
Appears as if all issues have been resolved and all parts sem to function together well. I still have some carb work to do with some internal passages etc as both accel pumps dont appear to be working well. Been a blast , looking forward to the summer races etc.:)

Just because the builders forum has been dead for the last couple days thought i would do another update.:)
The Indy World of Wheels car show was great. Tom Culberson and the Indy Road Rockets had their own area for the traditonal pre 1962 cars to display. The area was one huge room with no ropes stations of any kind. 70 cars filled the room and the action was lively each day and night. The crowds loved the open walk up and touch atmosphere!!! Even though i had to work i did get out friday evening and sunday afternoon and evening. The other times lindross was there with the cars and the dragster. I printed up a couple hundred copies of the HA/GR rules and lots of folks talked to us about the car. Hopefully there will be a couple more cars coiming out of Indianapolis.
The car is back at the shop now and we just placed it today where we can put the finihsing touches on it.
A couple little things to do and its finished.
I need to change out the front sping bolts with some grade eight fastners just for some added safety. ( 8 bolts)
The carbs ( although i did rebuild them) leak and overflow fuel from one or more vent tubes and the accel pumps dont squirt good at all. I have another pair coming off the hamb board and will pick my best pair from the group.
My vintage ignition is a Mallory Rev Pol and uses a split primary coil winding and uses two circuits with two points and two condensors to alternate twin coil primary firing events. I ran it on the distributor machine and it works great. The problem is i havent tried to hook up a tach to it yet. May be a problem???
I dont know what rpm to expect out of the engine although i expect it to be a little higher than normal with the roller lifters and roller camshaft. I really will need 6000 plus for the 4:86 gear ratio and the 29.5 tall tires. The GMC's dont really like much more than 6000-6500 max and prefer 5500 or so. Will need a couple test drives to get a final figure on this.
I need to properly align the front axle, as i can tell from just pushing the car around it needs some adjustment. The axle fights itself because of tons of caster and the tow is incorrect.
My clutch petal is too high causing me to raise my leg up in the cockpit and i need to shorten the petal arm to allow my foot and leg to get down lower in the car. Car is very comfortable with a fat man seat of over 18 inchs wide. Gas petal needs a heal support built in for comfort as well. I figure these rides need to be a comfortable to drive as possible. Especially for us older fat guys. :D :D
Anyway shes looking good and i cant wait until summer to get some track time .;)
Remember guys we are feeding all you for dinner Friday evening at my place and Sat night at Culbertsons Customs . Just bring your cars eat and enjoy the night air. Hopefulley this year it will be dry air.

The dual point conversion shouldnt change anything on a reg coil hook up and almost all tachs should work very well.
On the rev-pol i have it has two primary windings in the coil and each set of points runs three cylinders. ( a early Mallory set up)
This makes me need a tach that will do three cylinders i think.

Yup, or just use a 6 cylinder tach and divide by two as long as it will read high enough. A 14,000+ RPM tach ought to get you there. An enterprising person could actually make a new face for their tach so it would read right, but have a nice, wide easy to read spread.

Been working on AFB carbs the last few days and have had some experiences. Got a matched pair of Chrysler/Plymouth AFBs on there now and fixed the intake leaks. WOW engine sounds really good.
I have aquired a couple extra AFB early carbs if anyone wishes to try one on there HA/GR car.
They are pretty hard to find in working shape but they fit the pre 1962 guideline pretty well. They were used from 1958 up on tons of cars and range in actual cfm.
I will do a tech post on this forum on a couple of them as i get time.

WED NIGHT UPDATE:
Wed night is hot rod night at the shop and we got a few issues put together .
My tach problem is prety well figured out. Te Mallory rev pol when used on a six cylinder has two coil primarys and a three lobe cam in the distributor. This means that the distributor has two sections firing three cylinders each. It also means we cant run the engine hooked to both sides at the same time. So we have to run the tach using only three cylinders. No one seems to make a a tach for a three cylinder so the next best thing is a four cylinder selection. Using the four cylinder setting works well but the reading is off 25%, so 6000 actual engine rpm is reading 4500 on the tach.
So we are creating a new HAMB tach face with new numbers etc. I took the face off a new tach and will take it to the graphics shop next door in the morning. ( Will post a pic when done).
We tried out our secret weapon ( only if needed :) ) tonight to see if she fits the seat and can see over the steering wheel. Her name is Jody and she weighs in at 110 lbs. May need the weight advantage when we run Hiney?? What ya think??
Got the engine running really well with the new ( rebuilt) pair of afb's and it starts and runs really good for now, still go a couple little bugs on the list but we should get to the burn out stage soon.
Also i want to weigh it out with some portable scales front to rear ratio and total weight.// Any one done this ??
Hiney or anyone heard the deal regarding Goodguys Indy ??? Should we be signing up?? Other classes have got their entry blanks in the last couple days????

Been more than a little busy with other projects and every now and then my real job gets in the way.
Thought i would share my latest up date on the HA/GR project.
Remember i had a tach problem with the use of the period Mallory 3 lobe cam Rev Pol ignition system? The coil is divided into two banks of three cylinders each. The thought was that at higher rpm this would increase spark output based on a twin primary coil. I actually found another new old stock coil for a spare and decided to use this system after running it on a distributor machine.
The problem came when i tried to hook up a tach. There doesnt seem to be a three cylinder tach.
The answerr seems to be to find a tach with a four cylinder setting switch and then the reading would be off by 25% as the signal was three and the tach was thinking four.
Knowing it was 25% off i had my friend Pete at Freelance Grafics ( shop next door) make me a HAMB face with the new settings scaled to read the correct 25% lower numbers.
Knowing this engine should not be spun much over 6000 makes it easy to just stop at 6000.
So there , is this the first ever HAMB tach ???:D :D

A May update on the HA/GR Waffle House Special:
I had read somewhere that 10% of a car build takes 90% of your time. That seems to be true with this car. We have been so close ( yet so far) for our first burnout it seems.
Problem :
1- Carbs- First of all finding good early afb carbs is a bit of a problem and i have built a few in the last few weeks and ran them on my test engine ( a flathead:) ) and finally just tore all the intake tubes down and had every part milled as i felt i had a air leak i just couldnt over come. Well that fixed that problem engine now sounds really good with a lopey idle you would expect from a roller camshaft.:)
2-Front wheel studs, using a 1937 Morris front axle makes finding some parts ( like wheel studs) a problem . The hubs really wont allow replacement due to construction etc and we had to make new lug nuts ( 6 lug wheels) and that required a world search for the correct tap. Tuck next door got them done last week and we torqued them all on the car.
3-A new problem with a drivetrain vibration when running on the jack stands . Removed engine for another input shaft to transmission and blow proof housing alignment inspection. It now appears that the engine adapter ( required for the GMC) is off center quite a bit. The locating dowels for the chevy lakewood housing are off to one side some. ( enough to make it bind the shaft).
I bought this adapter a few years ago from a supplier on the inliner site and never did like the overall appearance of the plate, looks like a major redo for sure. I will go to Bendtsons this time for sure.
On the bright side , looks like we have narrowed it down to just this problem before a test drive , other than a clutch petal change ( for driver comfort). Looking forward to Indy Goodguys and the HAMBer Spam a Rama......:) :)

WOW is all i can say!!!
After fighting some transmission alignment problems and a million air leaks Lindross and I got her done today.

Dropped it on the ground and drove it out the shop door , around the building , lined her up and popped the clutch . Holy shit, this thing will get it across the parking lot!!!!
I have the throttle set for only half throttle and had no problem smoking the tires. Now i know how you guys feel, this is great!!!
Lindross asked what the tach was saying , and i said what tach ??
All i could do was hang on to the wheel. Next time i WILL buckle up for sure.
Bugs ?? You bet but what a challenge this is going to be!!!
You guys that havent built you one of these are missing the blast of a lifetime!!!

Mac,
This is much more of a thrill than i had ever imagined...:)
We had hoped for a tuesday evening try out session before Goodguys but Goodguys may be our first runs etc.
We will be very happy to just finish the full quater mile and not break anything at goodguys.
I already think i dont have enough clutch.
A clean straight 15.00 will make us smile. its all about looking good at this point right ???:)
I am not a "track tuner" my ideas have always been unload run a clean run and "fight " the gremlins at home not at the track..:) i

You know with my old bracket car I refused to work on it at the track, it was always ready before we got there, and it always worked out. But now this over carbed old flathead running heads up just won't work out that way. It seems we are always looking at the plugs and rejetting the carbs. All so we can squeeze a little bit more out of the damn thing.:D
I bet you run faster than 15.0. the KEY is getting the trans to shift right, trust me.
Bubba, I hope you do not do like I did. Carried mine up to Georgia this past weekend for it's maiden voyage down the 1/4.
It showed it's ASS!
I have run it on the road in front of my house and it spit and sputtered at little bit when I launched it, but spun the tires and went. Well, when it hit the track, it did not spit and sputter, it would leave the line and then SHUT off, roll about a length and a half and come back on again. I tried everything that I knew to do and it would not do any better.
I am pulling the intake off of it to see if that is the problem, so I am almost back to square one.
Even though it showed it's ass, I still had fun!

REJ,
Sounds like too much air. I've had similar problems on other race cars. Keep trying.
Rand Man, I thought the same thing. I'm trying to run two carbs on this motor and everytime the second carb would kick in, the motor would shut off. Even with one unhooked, it still did it, but not as bad.
I'm going to try a single with the stock manifold and see if it works that way, then I will start over and try again.

Think you're right. Had that prob when I first did the BBD (two barrel) on the Toad, (temporarily riched up the idle and just rolled the pedal more 'til I could work it out, took a bit of tinkering).
We're hoping the vac/slide SU carbs will handle that aspect of over carbing ours.

What carbs are you running? Can you send me a picture of your set-up, I may be able to help. I specialize in ignition and carburation tuning.

Hi Ron, maybe you can help me on my holley carb. It runs fine, but can't seem to make very much power, Do you know much about Holley 1 barrels on a stock slant 6? My best time was only 15.61.
Ron, I'm running two BBD two bbl Carters, or I should say I was. Took the manifold off and installed a stock two bbl intake and carb when I got home yesterday. I need to weld up a pipe for the stock exhaust manifold and block off two holes on the exhaust and then I can see what it does.
I built a log manifold and had the two carbs on it. The problem was that it was getting too much air when you opened the butterflies off the start line, but the plugs were showing the mixture was right after a full 1/4 mile pass. It is probably an intake design flaw, I do not claim to be an engineer, but I am sure I did something wrong when building the intake.
I'll get the single running and probably run it that way untill I get the "race" motor built. It will probably handle the two carbs better than the stock motor.
As far as pictures, if you look under the thread about the "Nightmare" being complete, there are some pics of the two/two intake setup.
Well, seems if several of you were right on. Took the two/two manifold off and installed a stock cast iron 2bbl intake and ran the car down the street last night.
I am going to have to learn how to make it leave the line without spinning the tires now. It spun all the way through second and half way through third gear. I admit I was leaving a little hard after the episode last weekend, but I did not think I was leaving that hard.

REJ,
It sounds like the accelerator pump isn't injecting enough fuel when you hit the gas pedal, and you have a bogg from too little fuel. With the engine shut off look down the throat of the carb while you quickly open the throttle. You'll see a "shot" of fuel come out ot the accelerator pump "shooter". The small hole in the shooter needs to be enlarged a couple of thousands then try it again. You'll have to creep up on the final size of the hole until the bogg goes away. If you make the shooter hole too large you'll get a bogg from too much fuel. This condition is similar to giving a cold engine wide open throttle in the winter time. The problem is compounded when you have too much carburation on a small engine. Just go easy on drilling out the shooter and your problem will be solved.
Another thing: remove your distributor and weld the advance mechanism so there isn't any mechanical and vacuum advance in the distributor. Then set your timing at about 36* BTDC. The engine will start and run at 36* all the time. You'll be surprised just how responsive the engine will be. Be sure to run good gas so the engine doesn't "ping".
Let me know how it runs. If you have any questions, call me at 816-436-6108 any evening.
Ron

Joe,
You simply have too small of a carb to make any power. Originally the slant 6's were in an economy car and weren't required to make very much power. Similar to the old VW bugs. The best thing you could do to a VW bug was to install a 2 barrel carb on an after- market manifold. Then they would run a little over 100 MPH.
Modify your manifold to mount a Rochester 2GC carb (they came on all General Motors cars thru the 50-70's). If you can find an after-market 2 carb manifold it will really wake your engine up and would be much better than modifying your stock manifold.
Also modify your distributor like I described in my answer to REJ above.
What are you running for an exhaust system?

Hi Ron, today I took that one barrel off and installed a Offenhouser four barrel manifold, with a carter AFB off of a fifty eight plymouth, and along with that a six into one hooker header, instead of the old exhaust manifold, this should make it move some air mixture, I never did believe what those earlier seniors used to say, "It needs back preasure", Thanks for your help Ron. Joe.

REJ, what Ron said about locking the dist advance is good advice. I'd do that if I were you. Our dist has been locked since day one on our flatty. Starts good, runs good.
Brad
Ron, thanks for the info. I will probably run with a single carb for right now, and soon as I get the "race" motor built, take your advice on the carbs.
Brad, I have an old distributor that I am going to try that with. I'm running the advance higher than normal now, and was assuming the mechanical and vacumn advance would put it in the ball park.
When I was drag racing the bikes, we were running mags that had no advance and did the same thing.
I may have to run a late model starter as I have noticed that when it gets on the hot side, it does not want to start. The old dodge starters were gear reduction and did not spin these things over very fast. I noticed that this was happening over the last weekend and thought maybe I had it too far advanced.
