Scared to show your plates? I don't get it.

I didn't want to muck up raven's post about his daughter but I'm just curious why some people feel like they have to block their license plate out of photos. Don't you display them for the whole world as you drive down the street? What does the criminal world have to gain from photographed and published license plates? Are you just scared of the man? What gives? It seems more than a little silly and paranoid but maybe I'm missing the point.

i think its just that they dont want you to know that they are from florida, missouri, etc. if you fuzz out your plate theres a slight chance people might think your a ruler from california.

I'd blur my plate to avoid people seeing my "1997" registration sticker... or or keep people from asking why ive got a Kansas plate on my car, living in CA. (damn DMV wants over a grand to register it)

Other than that, i really have no clue why people blur their plates. Weird. Good question, though...

Crooks have been known to target people by their plates. They get your address from public records or from a cooperative cop or insurance agent then show up with the trucks and tools when you're at work or out of town. Also people get the address from your plate and call harrassing you to sell the friggin car. That's happened to me. That's why magazines usually block out the plate or cover them with their logo on the feature cars.

I have Idaho Oldtimer plate 1931. Every so often someone calls or shows up at my door wanting to buy that plate.

I can get your name and address from a lic plate number and so can anyone. That's true everytime you drive down the street, but probably a lot more people see a pic on the internet than a car on the street, and if you're driving it even less will get a chance to get the plate number since not everyone will have time or be close enough to get it. It just seems smart to block out plate numbers to me.

It's a little late to be worrying about privacy et al.

Bout 8 years ago when we got the Internet into work a guy plugged in my name to a free program and got back, address, phone # and map to the house.
Kinda stunned me it did.

Now, if you plug your phone number into Google it will spit back your name and address.

To top it off, a couple weeks back I was doing some research on house valuations with a view toward selling my house and hit a site that would do it for $9.95.
Figured it was a reasonable price as I thought the first real estate agent had tossed a lowball figure at me.

Anyhow, the information comes back along with every neighbor up and down the street for about five houses on both sides along with their phone numbers and the names of everyone who lived in the house with them.
Way more information than I wanted and a touch scary as well.
The real interesting part was for an extra $3.95 you could get their arrest records if any as well as assets and probably their credit report.

That's been going on for a while.
My 6th grade class and the other 6th grade glass went to the beach on a school bus for a "graduating from the 6th grade" beach party.

Anyway, right before we started home one of the teachers asked for all the native born Californians to raise their hands.

Maybe it's different for us " down under ".
We visited America back in 1979, we arrived in San Francisco, drove to L.A. and then up to Oregon to visit friends, we also drove to Nevada and then back S.F. never any trouble, apart fron some people from Oregon who told us to fuck off back to Cali.( we had a rented Cali. car ) when we explained who we were all was ok!
Now if we did that trip again would it be different? would we have to carry " protection " would we have to make sure we only drove in the daytime, would we be better to stay home!
Don't get me wrong, we spent 3 weeks there and loved it.

I grew up in Cincinnati but came to SoCal in the Navy in 1968, never went back 'cept to visit. I travel alot in my work and I see many corners of the US; it seems that no matter where you go these days there is a large number of people who live in an area/state who didn't originate there. It used to be cool to have a sticker on the back of your car saying that you are a "native" of your state; the way I see it, you can't change where you're born but you sure as hell change where you live. My motto, "Californian by choice, not chance"...

As far as privacy being gone, that's true if you take advantage of the technology that requires bites of privacy. Come of the govt data you can get around by just not updating it.

Very little data exists for me, and much of what does is incorrect or outdated. My electric bill and my Netflix account are just about the only accurate records of my address.

You guys have seen me post an image of my Waffle-House card instead of typing it when someone needs my address or phone number. That is one more small, but not foolproof, way of preventing my address and phone number from being accounted for.

Probally the biggest forfiture of information came last year when I bought a new truck and got a loan to pay for it. I tried to give them my "permanent" address - my parents - but they couldn't find any proof that I lived there.

For you land owners, the privlage of building equity creates the most public records, and allows anyone access the the largest amount of info.

It's not that I have anything to hide, but I AM paranoid and don't trust most other folks motives, particularly governments.

There are all sorts of things you can do to hide data, or make it confusing or difficult to get to, but there are plenty of security, privacy and conspiritional web sites that can give advice on those.

Similar info; guy gets a vin # off new Escalade SP? goes to GM dealer with "lost my key" get duplicate made steals car' maybe true, maybe not, here in NY the vin # is on the car and on the registration sticker.

You should not be able to obtain a new key by VIN # unless you provide the dealer with proof of ownership.

I used to be a state law enforcement officer. One of my buddies locked his keys in his car while we were training at a firing range. The car was a new vehicle, so the trusty old Slim Jim would not work.

Three of us all showed up at the dealer in full uniform with valid credentials. The guy refused to make us a VIN based key without the registration to the vehicle.

We exlained that the registration was locked in the vehicle. This fact was lost on him. I guess the fact that we were state law enforment officers was lost on him too. Maybe he thoought we were all crooked and were part of a police car theft ring...lol

Finally after speaking with the manager of the dealership, we were able to get a new key.

Maybe he was afraid it was a trap....lol
