Fulla questions this morning ain't I?

Anyway, was trying to describe this thing - on the left - to a guy and couldn't decide what to call it.

I've been calling it a Drill Jig, but the name doesn't seem quite right.
I've heard Pattern Plate, Masking Plate and a couple of other names.

As you can see it has the Ford 4 1/2" x 5 pattern so it can be bolted to a wheel or used as a pattern for same.

(Not showin off stuff here, I'd like to know the proper name for it. I made it 4-5 years ago, called it a Drill Jig as noted above - which confuses some - and now I'm not sure what to call it.)

Jig doesn't seem to far off but I'd probably call it a template.

Some people would be confused if you called their nose a breathing aperture. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd call it a [Drilling] Template if it's used to lay out a pattern.

Jigs are for fishing...or dancing http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Actually it gets down to whether it guides a cutting tool, which could be a jig (or a template,) or just locates a shape so you can trace the pattern which would be just a template, or now that third word, pattern.

Damn British put too many intersecting words in the English language didn't they? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just call it a PENTA-PORTER© and market it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, how about "Wheel Bolt Pattern Drilling Jig?"

Now, ya have to show us how it works!!

Here's the original reason it was made.
I needed five 1/4" holes on a 4 1/2" circle so as to mount these home-made caps.

The 1/2" holes locate the "Penta-Porter" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif onto the wheel and the 1/4" holes guide the drill.
Worked pretty good.

The original plan was to drill and tap regular closed mag lugnuts 1/4-20 on the ends and mount the caps to those.
Didn't work because I clamped the mag lugnuts in the lathe chuck by the hex flats.
As you know, the hex part to a bolt - or mag lugnut - isn't truly centered.
Should have clamped the mag lugnuts by the round section where they are centered.
Once I'd knocked out five of them, I found they were far enough off that the cap wouldn't match the hole pattern in the mag lugnuts and I couldn't get all the 1/4" allens on.

So, not desiring to buy more mag lugnuts, I drilled and tapped the wheel proper.

Wanted a little different look to the slot mags and believe I succeeded.
Now I've decided they are a little too square looking and am striking off in a different direction. (I'll show you the results in a few days.)

Finally decided that with the lack of straight lines on a 32, the square edged caps didn't work that well. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Here at the Rocket Factory, we call them Drill Plates. Certainly the same thing, just a different name! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Template is good, I might call it a fixture. Both should be understood in about any machine shop in the country.
Good piece, the ones I have are all made from plexiglass. And some are getting pretty warn, so I may use a chunk of metal next time.

I donno Jay, they look pretty "spiffy" to me!

Is there enough "meat" to radius the edge and give them a "rounded" look?

I "vote" for keeping them!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
