i was talking to an uncle today and he told me on small parts, like motorcycle fenders and tanks you can put masking tape on the whole piece after painting it then draw your pattern on the tape and then cut out what's going to be another color. He said you could buy wide tape for this.I can draw beter then free handing that that thin tape so is this an option? How do you get the tape residue off of the rest of the part once your done?

Use a good quality tape like the 3M brand......I use 3M and never had that tape residue left on the paint.....
Make sure it is their top of the line stuff too, sometimes I run into a lesser quality version of 3M..

Thanks, what's the widest tape you could use on objects as small and curved as a motorcycle tank?

a trick i picked up was put the tape on your jeans fist before you put it on the painted piece. this takes alot of the bite out of the tape, so theres no chance of it pulling up the paint when you remove it.

just be carefull not to cut into the underlying paint with the razor! Good luck though, and what are you puttin the flames on?

if you use 3m tape you dont have to do any blue jeans trick but be carefull not to cut to deep always use sharp blades so you dont have to push hard to cut tape
another trick is to paint a brite white on the flamed area first, then when it dries put a boarder of the thin masking tape around the edges, spray the flame colors & when it dries peel the thin shit off & you'll have a perfect, nice pinstripped edge around the flame.
