The rules state that your car has to be "Self" starting. Does that compute to mean, The on board battery has to start the car??? OR can the on board batt. just operate the necessary things needed to make it run??. And use another "Plug In" battery to start it with. Of course with the required on board starter...

On our cars, we can start the cars unassisted, at the start line, but we do 'tricklecharge' our batteries between races.

Cheers,

We interpet it to mean the battery can be any where you want it to be as long as you can start the car. We(Ram Rods) thought about not running an onboard battery to save weight but changed our mind which I'm glad we did because it would be a pain in the ass to cart the batt and cables to the starting line.

Self-starting means self-contained. Charging between rounds is fine, but if you need a jump at the starting line, you loose.

Pretty wild. I always thought it said in the rulebook that Top Fuel & Funny Cars must be self starting too. Maybe I am wrong but that little cart with the thick cables that runs over to that "thingie" they hook onto the front of the "belt-driven tunnel ram" to fire them off seems to fit within the rules for them guys. Maybe if we ever get the opportunity to run "fuel", then we can get us a little cart w/ a "thingie". Until then, I suppose we'll all just suffer through having to carry an on-board battery. http://www.model-a-ford.com/LOL.gif

If anyone wants to try one of those little thingies, as Brent called them, they are a pain in the ass. We used them on the top fuel bikes we used to run and that means two or three guys on the starting line. If you did not have a "crew" with you, it was impossible to start the bike by yourself.

Well I was just wondering. Because on my other car (fuel altered) I have a golf cart (also for towing) all set up with everything needed on the starting line. Including 2 large batts, for more omph in starting the engine. I guess I can leave it at home... Thanks

Whose rules are you running altered under? --and do they consider your current set-up "self-starting"??

'self starting' means they dont have to be push started.

Well yes they do consider it self starting. Rules are under NHRA, VRA, ANRA, Just about every sanctioning body.Like Mitch said, It does not have to be push started.Besides I wouldn't want to carry an extra 30# if I didn't have too...

We/they simply used the wrong wording when we wrote the "rules" (they were supposed to be guidelines). The intention was self contained but the wording "self starting" allows other interpretations. I don't think anybody thought the wording would ever be scrutinized the way it has been LOL. Brad

then you dont know drag racers!:D :D :D

Particularly, old ones (and that's a fact). Where there's a grey area, there're a multitude of tricks. :D

What can I say?
