I like to worry - sometimes needlessly- but most of the time just as part of the big picture-I like to overanalyze the stuff back there in the most remote corner- kinda hidden from view.
Ok -Ill get to the point!
I am now starting to move the pile- [my 31 roadster from the storage shack into the light of day-AND I thought about how to mount the rear end. I was going to find a set of the longer radius rods from say a 40 ford rear and attach them securely to the rear like I had them on my 29 RPU.
I am now a little more leaning topwards a more secure if not UGLIER control arm set up instead.I had a set that had one bent slightly.....so I put it in the vise and I figured it would be a chore to straighten this thing back.
Well was I in shock....I slipped a peice of pie over it about 5 feet long and one tweak[very easily done] DID THE JOB!
Rather than be happy with this revelation- I am now thinking how little an amount of tourqe I put forth to bend this thing almost three inces till straight!
This brings me to my concern-are most of these 65 year old peices about the same thickness of metal[read metal LEFT] or are a lot of them barely up to the task?I drove a peice of heavy solid rod in the last set I used to alleve the worry of failure.
This car will have a 409 with an aoto tranny. I believe a flatty that was stock and an easy throttle attitude would make me feel a lot safer than a little more torque and powere is leaving me.....
I tentd to THRASH my stuff- so rather be safe than sorry........AAHHHEM!- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[OK give your truthful testimonials in the following paragraphs!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why not set up the bones as the lower bar of a four bar?

You'd get the trad look and the bones would be loaded in compression or tension depending on whether accellerating or braking.
In any event, stay away from setting up the old bones so that they operate in bending mode.

Fwiw - most of them I've seen have been relatively rust-free on the inside so I don't think there's a problem there.

You could always drill some 1/8 - 3/16" inspection/test holes and weld em up later.

I like this idea myself. Has anyone got pics of how they've done this kinda set-up?

well thats OUT-but thanks C9-If ya think of a four bar most of the force applied by AXLE rotation -under acceleration would be applied to the LOWERS.-RIGHT?
pulling on the top would be less likely to damage than the pushing/twisting on the lowers-
I thought about installing a tourqe arm in center on top to aid the stress.
My bones I mentioned have holes in them at both ends...also I hear loose stuff in there-NOT GOOD. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Kenny....even in new condition, your 409 will turn those old 40 pieces into spaghetti the first time ya "shower down" on 'er....go with a center torque arm arrangement. T-man says he whipped one up for his T project. Axe him for photos....

I posted some pictures of my 4 bar setup using '36 bones a couple of weeks ago. I think the post ended up in the tech-o-matic.

Stupid question: Could the same 4-bar technique be applied to front suspension?

Wayne, Geoff Rae's coupe has a wishbone on the lower rear 4 bar, and in that pile of mags i gave you there's a feature of a model A roadster pickup that uses 2 wishbones on each side for the front 4 bars.

There's an idea: pairs of drilled wishbones in place of those damned ugly chrome 4-bars. Would look a little more authentic.......if not just as ugly!

Mark: you realize how long it'll take me to look through those mags, don't you?! Will have to take a look under Geoff's car next time I get a chance.

Well you wanted them!! LOL!!!

You could just disguise the 4 bars by covering the bar with the tubing from the wishbone - to make it look like a wishbone, rather than weld bungs into both ends of the bone.

Sounds kinda like puttin' Rocket covers on an SBC. Cheatin'!
I'll keep browsing the world of old-timey suspension to find what I want.
