I finaly got my car to start. Problem is that it only does it when it's cold. Once the engine's warmed up, it doesn't want to start, even with starting fluid. It's a stock 6V '55 Plymouth with a flat 6 and stock 1 bbl carb, lots of miles. Any suggestions? Thanks.

My buddies 49 Dodge used to do that.
Soon as it got hot it wouldn't start.
Turned out to be a bad ground.
Take some jumper cables and go from the battery ground to the frame, see if it will fire up.

Yep, timing. If not its either a bad cable/connection or the starter.

My '55 did that when it was really cold out (and the engine was hot). Apparently, from reading the replies here, the only solution is a complete overhaul of everything under the hood http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

90% of the time it is ignition related, according to Doc Jacobs. My ballast resistor gets hot in the summer... acts just like vapor lock. The Doc set me straight. Went through the whole electrical sys and added one of his units. Boss starts every time. himmelberg

What about some kind of heat spacer for the carb? Did you leave one out when you put it back together. Just another thing to think about.

I had the same problem changed the starter and set the timing but it turned out to be a bad ground.
