It's probably a satin clear coat, but to us old farts it just looks like or reminds us of clear lacquer that hasn't been color-sanded and polished yet.
In other words it just looks like he's too lazy to finish the job, or brought it out in public without finishing the job.

Not convinced.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

basecoat paint, sealed with 2060 flexed & flat clear. you can mix in the 2021 clear to get the sheen you desire. works killer.

If memory serves, and most of the time it does'nt, you can achieve that effect by replacing the hardner with a catalyst. This should kill the gloss and in turn give you a nice satin metalic paint job. I know that Cole painted his truck with a flatened out metalic pearl paint job that looked bitchin. Really nice soft highlights. Maybe he can chime in and let ya' know how to go about doin' it.

Yeah, isnt that one of the many Cole Foster specialties.(not the car but the paint style) I would love to have a paint job like that. Please let us know how its done..

my car has a similar finish and it was just basecoat without clear . lay it on kinda heavy and it lasts along time . I dont know about putting clear with flattener in it over that , like Doc says it is kind of cheating . my car will get a shiney clearcoat one day when it is ready , but for now it is better than primer or flatblack . it looks like the red mrec might be basecoat that has been rubbed out . dont know but that car is amazing .

Local paint guy suggested that I use flat clear coat, which is intended for use on bumpers. Probably that "Flexomaticsheeesaw" that somebody mentioned. Folks at the paint stores flip out when you tell them you arent gonna use a clear coat. Atleast in San Antonio they do.

So far no one has poured any gas on my car . . . I couldnt tell you http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif maybe it would ? if it did it would be easy to match the finish .

There was a better pic of that '36 in Custom Car ( UK mag ) about a year ago, looks great. I like the finish..

Theres a '59 chevy wagon over here thats in a satin green with a dark green flake roof. Looks better every time I see it.. Heres a pic, you can't really see the flake in this though

Ask Ricky Racer what he sprays. I forget the part number. It is a satin clear.

I tried putting flatner in the clear and the guys at O'reily's thought that I was crazy. I guess they were right because I didn't get the look that I wanted. Mine looks real kool in the dark, but in the day light it looks like just a bad paint job. The Merc has enough road rash now that I'm going to have to re do the primer again. Root you said there is a part number for satin clear coat? Thanks for the tip.

Happy Trails,

Mick

flattener sucks. ppg makes an awesome flat clear. (2060 flexed & flat clear) the cool part is you can add regular gloss clear (2021) to it to give a sheen or eggshell finish if you want. kind of works backwards of how flattening agents work. it works pretty bitchin. flattening paste is cheap, but never works and it actually changes your color a bit cause it gives it a white tint. spend the extra money for the ppg 2060 clear.

believe -mike- is on the right track, wife's late model mustang with a candy paint job has that same effect in the inner fenderwells where no clear was applied. Inside of gas door is the same way and there's no damage after 2 years of daily driving and surely by now someone would have dribbled some gas on it.

it may b single stage paint with a whole lot of flatner added?
