I think it is the National Insurance Crime Bureau that puts out a book which decodes VIN's. I have a recent one but they only cover about 10-15 years back. Not sure if this is what you are looking for or not.

Which book store did you go to? I think I've seen separate books for the different car companies. I'm sure I've seen them for Ford at different Barnes and Noble stores.
I think it's called "Ford by the numbers."

Cars and Parts maazine put out a couple of books titled "Catalog of American Car ID Numbers" a few years ago. I bought the '60-'69 and the '70-'79 editions, but I don't think they ever got around to publishing any other number books. So, if you're looking for earlier info, Hollander's Interchange manuals are a good source. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hollanders lists that in the front pages of each manual.
If you can find a junkyard that has kept the old ones you're in luck.
