View Full Version : Let's build a H.A.M.B. car........

I brought this up in that thread about the smashed-up '32 five window on Ebay.
What are the thoughts of building a car to represent THE H.A.M.B. at some cool shows. Wow the gold-chainers into submission.
Anyone who wants, can donate parts or time. We could title it under The Jalopy Journel... The H.A.M.B. or RYAN...or ME http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
For now, if we just get a commitment to donate the parts, we can figure out WHERE this is going to happen.
Maybe it could jump from shop to shop.
We could hand it off to a worthy H.A.M.B.er, with a driver's license.
I don't think SAMIYAM could lose a whole fucking car. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I'll start us off with a '30-'31 Ford cowl.
I think we could pull this off.
How about some thoughts...?

sounds like a cool idea BUT
We can't even pick out a friggin Tshirt design together as a group, you think we could all collectively put together a car? There's SO many opinions on this board....I dunno....get ready for the biggest bitch session ever :P http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We tried that a couple years back, in the end someone will try and keep, another will bitch about it, and the last will want to give it to Ryan.
It doesn't work, build the car yourself and give it to ryan to auction off. see if you hard work pays off.
It just never works

I think it could workif you had a bunch of local HAMBers, maybe a club, do it and then sell the car and give the money to Ryan (or another charity http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif).
Any HAMBer could donate parts so we could all be involed but leave building to one group. HAMBers could submit design ideas and maybe the person whos design was chosen could win something cool.
there already is a car that represents the HAMB, it's a black '38 Ford Coupe.

WHY does it have to be a 30-31 square body...why not a kustom...a '54 Chevy? A '55 Ford...wait...the epitome...a '49 MERC!!!

not to sabotage the thread, rather i want to add to it. i might be coming across a pickup that i think would be awesome for HAMBers to help me build. it can absolutely be passed around from shop to shop for a chop, etc. we could rock this bitch for the summer or so and then sell it and money can go to ryan, that's a kool idea. when i say i want to add to the thread, what i mean is that so far all the replies on this post are from midwesterners, no east coast people...
let's do one/another one on the east coast. this doesn't have to represent the hamb if people are put off by that idea, but this could be like the ultimate "hamb chop". lemme know what ya think...
thank you.

Sounds like the old R&C Dream Truck. Went from shop to shop and customizers each took their turn. We'd never agree on a plan. Hell, we can't even make a T shirt or some stickers. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Maybe we can get Jessie James to help, I hear he isn't doing anything right now... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

why does everyone get so hung up on 'agreeing' on a 'theme'. we all think it should be chopped. someone chop it. we all think it should have a kick ass look. someone else paint it. it's got four wheels. someone else paint the wheels and decide on tires, etc. EACH person does their thing giving it their style and signature. we all have different ideas, yes. that's what makes us interesting, but we all are into the same general stuff, so it will turn out acceptable to all, i'm sure. no one has more say than anyone else, treat it like it was any paying customer, but this time you can give more input. this isn't rocket science, this can be done...

send it to different people and let them do what the hell they want to do to it (as long as it's "traditional") and see what hell it looks like when everything is done. Then th eonly thing people can bitch about is "well I woulda done it this way..or they should done it this way..." which will happen regardless.

That is a sure-fire way to end up with a cobbled up piece of shit that wouldn't bring $1200 on ebay.
Hell, most folks can't stick to one build style or theme from start to finish on their own car. Imagine what would happen when a dozen folks were encouraged to do their own thing?
This is the craziest thing I've ever heard of. When we all have running cars of our own maybe then we try this. Even better idea - even then, we don't.
You people are nuts... but I still love you all. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

hes' right but it'd be fun. I don't really give a damn either way. Not like it'd ever make it's way to the east coast anyhoo...yes, that's bitterness....

like i said, I will provide the original truck.. no one is out anything but their time and possibly some materials...
i can't figure out how to say what i feel about this idea without making it sound like "hey, help me build my car for free"...

I think its a cool idea but I feel that the vehicle should be sold and the money donated to SEMA or some kind of car building advocate or a worth while charity if one actualy exsists?? or maybe we could build Ryan a warehouse and then fil lit with cars that would really blow away the gold chainers then we could go to all the other car related message boards like ford barn and do the same for each of there creators then a bunch of Venture Capitolist would all build car sites and the car mkt would crash and all of our eferts would be for nothing LOL

Everybody build a car, take it to the HAMB drags....
The winner is the "HAMB Car."
Kilroy that's a great idea, except after they've won who is gunna want to donate their car? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Why don't I get to keep the car? I NEVER get to keep the car! Everybody else always gets the car and I don't get nuthin.....I think I should get to keep it even if I don't contribute any time or money or parts ....because I have the most posts. I want the car painted red with purdy billet aluminum wheels and a tan leather interior with a real cool stereo. Oh, and I want the windows on my new roadster tinted real dark. Do I get a roadster or do I hafta drive a damn ol coupe? I NEVER get a roadster! I always hafta drive a silly coupe! Bwaaaaaaaaa..Waaaaaaa!
This is a small sampling of what we'll hear if the car is built, which it shouldn't be. We're too big and diverse a group to agree on a good build plan, IMHO

How about we build HAMB headers. We'll send them around the country allowing each member to do a single tack-weld.
Better yet, we'll all take one piece off of our car and assemble at Ryan's house.
Let me start this out. I'll donate a used chrome exhaust tip.

yer heart is in the right place Joe but i don't have time or money to finish my own shit. but if everyone wants to chip in parts, money and time on MY projecti would be ALL for that!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are some people here with the same tastes and ideas......and there are some members with the willingness to participate.........I think if people got past the part of what happens to the car afterwards, the build part of it would leave memories and friendships you can't put a price on...
But I suppose the biggest obstacle would be getting a bunch of particpants together on a date and location......maybe something for the future.....
Fat Hack
04-15-2004, 06:12 PM
Fuck, all jokes and cartoons aside, my car already IS a "HAMBer" car! The project began with the donation of a severly rusted Fleetline from ONE member, then slowly began taking shape over the past few months using some donated parts, or parts bought at bargain rates from fellow HAMBers...
...and let's not forget the fact that the answer to virtually ANY question one may have in the course of his or her project can be had right here if you just step up and ASK!
HAMBers recently got together to thrash away at some body and spray work on Denise's ride, and Zeke's Gasser involved a healthy dose of HAMB labor and know-how recently as well!
There are countless other examples of HAMBers coming together, chipping in, lending a hand, or offering up a part to other HAMBers that there are DOZENS of "HAMBer cars" going together at this very moment at one end of the scale or another!
I am eternally thankfull for the help, advice, insults, and silliness we share here on a daily basis...we have something good here, and even though we can get silly or out of line to the point of probably giving Ryan an ulser at times...we've all seen how quickly HAMB Bruthas and Sistahs can come together for the good of one and all when the situation calls for it!
Yeah, my car IS a "HAMBer" car...cuz it wouldn't be possible to build and enjoy it without the help, support and friendships found within this (sometimes dysfunctional!) family of ours!
Now...that said...I really DO like the idea of collective effort by a large number of HAMBers to build one hot rod, but that would be a tricky deal to organize, control and execute!
(But for now, I've got my hands full with 'my' HAMBer car! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif)

Hack, you nailed it. Would a HAMB car effectively put a stop to the independent flow of parts and thrashes (ie: HAMBchop) that goes on already? I don't know.
How about everyone comes up here to Canadia and helps me build my car for free? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's kinda what I was thinking...
After some of the "attacks" so far, I doubt anyone will want to join in this. They might think... "Here's this guy offering this idea to make this whole board more FUN and maybe add to the collective knowledge and social structure of it's members... and on top of it, offers a Model-A cowl that would probably bring him a truck payment on Ebay... and he get's a load of shit for it."
I'm thinking that, too.
First off...
Nothing is impossible... NOTHING.
That's one thing I'd expect everyone on this board to know.
Second...
If you don't like the idea, or don't want to contribute, then don't.
I just think it would be cool to have a car where each part came from a different person... or a bit of the labor. That's why I thought a "from scratch" hotrod would be cool, rather than start with a whole car... but I don't expect, nor would I want it to be up to me.
Who gives a shit if it isn't EVERY H.A.M.B.er's dream car. We could do one a year and raffle the fucker off and the winner can blow it up at Mo-Kan... or we could give it to the Vatican for a new fuckin' Pope-mobile... and if it only brings $1200 on Ebay, then so fuckin' what?
And, Finally...
We could vote on the build plan...
(I'm not sure how these polls work so I may have to edit...)
Just an assumption, and I'm not speaking for him, but...
I bet if RYAN posted this idea, you'd all have your nose so far up his ass that we wouldn't be able to see the rest of your face.
Never mind, I guess...
I'll just post pictures when I spray gray primer and expect everyone to cum all over themselves.
Later.................

i have had a few people p.m. me since i added my idea of a truck to this post, they are up for doin' a HAMBtruck. so it is absolutely possible, and right now it is also very probable...
funny too, the people that are up for it never even posted here, just sent me pm's, they're not in it for the glory, nor do they feel the need to add their two cents.
too much complainin', not enough workin'
let's do this thing!

Does anyone remember what happened after Bonneville a couple of years ago? Virtually everyone who went came home with plans to attack the Salt with their own Land Speed creation. I was fairly new to the HAMB at the time and suggested WE as a group could build a car and give it a go. Everyone contributing in their own area of expertise. Well, the idea went over like a zit on a prom queens forhead. It was pointed out then that it would never get built because of all the different ideas which would be put forth. Nothings changed in the last two years. Not a good idea.
