From my previous post.
"I have been holding this in as to not jinx myself, but the other day I stumbled across an old hot rod that has been setting dormant for over 40 years. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to close the deal so I waited 'til it happened before I told ANYONE (ok, my wife knew).
Today I closed the deal. I'm am so freakin' excited.
The roadster was build by the father and an old boyfriend of the lady I bought it from. Her father has passed away and the boyfriend is long gone. She counldn't remember exactly but guessed it was built around '59 or '60. It's basically a hand built body and chassis. It's pretty complete except the motor, wheels/tires and front and rear axles have been pulled. It's going to need some steering work as the linkage seems kinda screwy. I'll be the first to admit that the workmanship is far from professionial but hey, for what I had to pay for it I am not complaining. The lady had decided to liquidate most of the family belongings (I think she really needed the money) and this happened to be part of it. I picked up several other really cool things but nothing car related...oh, except a BRAND NEW pair of 1959 Michigan license plates. Never was put on a car. Wouldn't they look cool on the roadster and just the right year too.
I'll post some pix asap."
Here are the pix.
By the way, did I mention it's a go cart?

Looks like a Coca Cola sign...
Cool..

Good eye. If the sign was still intact it would be worth way more than the car.

I'm looking for some soapbox derby wheels. I've been told to use a Maytag kick start motor (ok, that may take a little searching) and paint Zalinski's Hardware, Bay City, MI. on the sides of the cowl.
Here's some background. Zalinski's Hardware closed in 1955. Mr Zalinski's plans were to reopen the store after he retired from Dow. Long story short, he didn't. Several years after his death his Daughter (granddaughter of the original builder/owner) decided to liquidate all of the inventory plus many personal items. It was truely amazing. The store had stood still in time. Many items were "brand new" (in 1955), some things still in their boxes. Some things were priced quit reasonable and some things were going at market value. There were well over 200 people there. We were lucky as I was the 19th person thru the door.

I got 2 of them old motors and 1 actually ran a couple years ago, its sitting in a corner still bolted to the piece of sheet metal from the old wash machine, I was useing it to run a very small water pump and I can tell you it'll never run a go cart! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are you saying it's not powerful enough?

I think Paul Beck has one(washing machine motor) on a simplex cycle frame.

Thanks.
I don't know much about them but it appears they offered single and twin cylinder models.
I'm open to other ideas as long as it would be period correct. You can see in the first photo that there was a slot cut in the rear for a belt or chain drive.
The woman told me she has some "parts" that fell off when they were moving the car. She said she thought it was an axle but she didn't really know. I'll go pick it up Sunday. Sure would be nice if she had the wheels.

Great find! What a neat toy.
Old style wooden spoked wheels would really look cool on that thing.

a rebuild or some sort of upgrade to one of them old engines might get you on your way?
it would be interesting to have one of them old kick start engines in there instead of an old briggs and stratton pull rope engine

would it be period correct to install say an old pioneer or homelite chainsaw engine in there?

I guess anything from the '50s would be cool as long as it was a horizontal shaft.

that motor UPCHUCK has is the same as the one Paul has on his little motor bike (Iron Horse). it ain't dfast but i rode it and it is fun. it got ALOT of attention when he took it to Bonneville and rode it around the pits. i'd just run that little sucker in the go cart if you want period correct. if you want it fast go with a Briggs or something but i think the Iron Horse would be way cooler!!

Yeah, speed is not important. As a matter of fact, at this point I just would like one to mock it up. The car will probably end up hanging in my garage.

Donzie,
Those little Maytags run OK. A friend of mine in high school put one in a 20" bike frame with a Gleaner combine pulley bolted to the rear wheel. Damned thing would run 40 MPH without provision made for brakes! Wore out a pair of shoes riding it around town one Sunday afternoon, Mom was so proud of me! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
