View Full Version : Pulling a JUNK 216???

Well, after a day of eating rust, breathing dust and tearing up stuff, I feel I've made some progress towards ridding my old Chevy of the dead 216 boat anchor...although that anchor is pretty firmly set!

I took two bolts outta the front crossmember under the front engine mounts, then got the two long bolts out of the trans mount. The clutch inspection cover came off next, as did three of the trans-to-bellhousing bolts.

There's some funky-ass shit attatched to the torque tube that probably once operated the parking brake...gonna have to devise a plan for cutting that horseshit out and ridding myself of the useless up-through-the-floor pedals.

Now...what exactly holds the two side mounts on at the bellhousing area? Another HAMBer wants these things, so the axe, saw and hammer routine will be the last resort. They are COMPLETELY caked with some tough ass tar or something and I can't see any bolts...or little lumps that MIGHT be bolts!

I'm hoping I can yank the engine and trans up and forward, pulling it out of the trans as it goes...is there just the four bolts holding the trans to the bellhousing?

(Times like this I really wish I owned a torch...or knew a bored bodybuilder!)

While I was at it, I ripped out the stock gas tank, fuel line, exhaust system and random other crap from the car...the dudes who prowl the neighborhood in clapped out trucks on trash day looking for scrap metal will love me this week!

You say a TH-350 will fit in there, eh??? We'll see!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jay's in the hospital (again) here is the note I got from his wife today:

>>>Just a quick note to let you guys know what's up with Jason. We went into the hospital last night at 2am...AGAIN, and Jason has been admitted yet again. Same as last time...severe pain in his lower right back, and also where he had his appendix out 2 months ago...no kidney stones...all CT scans, and x-rays are normal...except for this terrible pain he has, and a VERY high white blood count...so as of now...we don't know what's up, we are awaiting the surgeons, and a few other Dr.s to give a diagonis (SP)>>>

So pray for him... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

u want me to come over and do it for you? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif to get the linkage apart.. find the rod with the two jam nuts on it and then there is the one that connects to that via a little loop job. there is one cotter pin on the end of that thats all u need to get loose to pull the motor. the clutch fork will just be hangin there so make sure u dont get that hung up when yanking on it. the two bolts on the bell housing mounts go in like the exuast bolts. u should be able to sneek the motor out by just pulling one off. thats how i do it. just take loose the one thats easier to get at. i think thats the passanger side one.. thats the one that hangs up more any way. just get tthat last bell housing bolt (swivle socket and long extension or pull the head off and u can get it from the top kinda) you will be all ready to rid the world of another useless 216 and rid into 2.8 heaven..........

The car came from Ypsi, dude, it's HARD ROCK to the core... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm out. No clue what's wrong. Colonoscopy and all turned up nada. Must be weak innards.

You want one of these "working" gearboxes I got lying around? It'd be my honor to "give" you one... (oh yeah, it'd be less to move in a month too. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

What were you planning to do with them? How do they attach? I'm always looking for '30s - '50s castoffs that I might be able to cobble together into something hot roddish.
