Here’s a pic of an axle I picked up after a more than interesting weekend. Came out from under a 36 Ford three window and I understand this is a popular year axle/wishbone combo for trad cars.

Regardless, it looks good to me, but I am curious if it is a 36 axle.

Anybody know for sure?

This pic shows what is supposed to be a 40 Ford brake on the axle shown above.

I’m not sure here either, but it looks like I think it should.

Nice part is, the axle has the brakes already set up and I’m guessing all it needs is some fresh parts.

The wheels that came with the axle look to be 40 - 48's, I think they’re all the same.
They measure 5 ½ x 15 and have four external lugs for the caps.

Once the 36's rear axle gets replaced with a nine incher I should get the other two wheels and have a matching set.

Measure between the perch bolts. If that span is around 36 3/8", the axle is '35 or 6 with the spring forward setup.

The backing plates are `46-48. The `39-41 have two adjusting nuts at the bottom.

The ends of the wishbone curve out to the spring mounts. That is an identifier for the 35/36 front ends. The axle is the same width at the perch bolts as 28-34 so could be used for a spring over set up. 40/41 wheels were 4" and 46-48 wheels were 4 1/2", I think! If they are wider you may have pick-up or Lincoln. All the parts shown are very desirable in these parts. Good find.

The wheels (15" with the hub cap nubs) sound like f-1/f-100. 40's Mercurys had 15"ers also but he Fords were 16"

oops misread the post both the above would have the internal nubs.
They could be garden variety Ford p/u from the 60-70s

Those are 42-48 spindles too.

backing plates look 48( no bottom adjusters) axle would be 33-36 ford bones should have a 2'' perch 35-36 would be the only ones like that i believe 37s have a 2 1/4 perch

Not to rob the post but what if the axle is 38" between the wishbone bolts and 49" between the king pins (measurements approx).
Just curious, and trying to ID an axle I have.

Porknbeaner has a 1937-41 axle.

Thanks
I remembered that the 32 perches were different but couldn't remember if they were wider or narrower.
And the axle width is something I never did know. Unless I was peeling it off a car I just looked for an axle that was about the right width and worked with it.
I guess I should chase down a table with dimensions.

C9....check out the brake setup I "invented" in the "Hey, Tuck...." post. This is all '36 stuff....axle and spindles, etc. I'll be springing it with torsion bars.

Thanks for the info guys.
It does measure out to be a 36.

Appreciate the info on the brakes as well.

Fwiw - the wheels look to be 5" wide - measured bead wall to bead wall.

Not 100% sure what I'm going to do with it, but I have a few ideas.

Nothing like collecting parts for the next project before I know what it will be.
