I got a question- with the 14" tires -I believe they are 205-70's that I have on the '58 El C it seems so incredibly low geared at 70.I believe I have a 3:70 gear now......
how much improvement can I expect from say a 235-75 15 on the rear instead?I would say its about 2-3 "taller a tire than whats there.
Ive been thinking of a set of chrome reverse/baby moons to replace the ol 5spoke MAGS as they are cheap and are available in the offset I need.will this be enough to make a difference or not?

It sucks that lagitimate questions like these fall off the front page... but here goes.
According to my Mark William's Gear Ratio "computer"... each inch that you gain in tire diamter, you will lose a tad more than 100rpm at 70mph.
It shows that a 25" tall tire, with a 3.70 gear at 70mph will make your motor turn a tic over 3500rpm.
With a 28" tall tire your rpm's drop to about 3150 at 70mph.
FWIW, the effects of changing to a 3.56 gear are as follows:
25" tall tire, 3.56 gear, 70mph = 3390rpm.
28" tall tire, 3.56 gear, 70mph = 3000rpm
Now the hot ticket for hwy cruising is a set of 3.08's
25" tall tire, 3.08, 70mph = 2900+ rpm
28" tall tire, 3.08, 70mph = 2600rpm'
Or better yet, swap in a 700r4 trans and keep your low gears and go with a moderate sized tire...
Sam.

Sam's right
Drop in a 3.00 to a 3.26:1 gear and then say a 26-28 inch tall tire.
Good all around gear.
I have a javascript here attached to an article on gearing. I never could figure oput how to post it so it never made tech week.
I think I could e-mail you the article or put it on a floppy for ya. Then you can compare gearing and tires to your hearts content.

I thought the Bel Camino was sold a few months back? Wasn't it on ebay? I'm glad you still have it, that was one of my favorite vehicles at the HAMB drags.
I always play around with the Richmond one that is posted above. VERY helpful.

FWIW, in case ya didn't know:
195/65/R15
195 millimeters wide
65% of the width of the tread is the height of the sidewall
Radial for 15" rim
That might help with picking out tires in these damned metric sizes. I hope my info was right
