View Full Version : What have I done over the last six weeks

I lost a lot of sleep, ruined my credit rating and beat up my walet pretty good. I worked on my truck untill 10pm or later every day of the week, after runing my shop. Didn't go to any shows or hangouts. Only went out to dinner twice, one was a Denny's. And called in just about all my good guy points.
What good came of it all, I am about to show you all the fruits of my labor. But first I want to give out some kudos to those that deserve them:
My Dad, Len Szymanski, for literaly working his fingers to the bone sanding and doing the body work and paint.
55Safari, Gregg Grisham, for ignoring his family for the last two weeks to help prep for paint and wiring duties.
Chip Quinn, my best bud and punching bag to blame shit on when it went bad. He did a lot of stuff I didn't have time to do.
My Unk Don, general goofball and in charge of painting and polishing.
Jock and Gwen Evans, lending a hand and working hard.
Rick Gantz, former employee and owner of the burned 61 Olds. He did a great job of cheerleading my on when it was getting tough not to mention helping out with prep work for paint.
Tom Roth, My other best bud for body work and cleaning.
Gettingreasy/MrsGetting greasy, Jesse Nathan and Camile and Deyomatic, Steve Deyo for staying until 5am Thursday night putting parts on after painting. You guys rock!
If I forgot anyone I am sorry for the oversight but it has been a hell of a buildup for me.

I have pics of the progress from painting to completion but I will spare you (and myself) from some of the deatails. I think you can imagine what seven people ganged up on one vehicle at the same time looks like...
Fast forward to Friday morning, the day we leave for Vegas

Thursday consisted of a old carb that needed to be gone through, Chip and Jerry cleaned it up just fine. Solved a vaccuum leak caused by a new thick carb base gasket. A few more adjustments and we put it on the ground...

Friday morning was a clusterfuck. Everyone was ready to go but me, still needed to adjust the clutch and I kept throwing belts. Went through three sets in an hour. Did some "adjustments" to the Alan Grove engine brackening and we were on our way.

We left town after 5pm Friday.
I forgot to put a vent in the gas tank, this caused a problem puting fuel in. OGNC came through with a NC member Damon, who opened his house up and tool box for some midnight repairs on Saturday.
I had a blast, got killer gas mileage due to the Tremec TKO trans. No real problems to overcome other than spiting belts of when I got carried away and revved it over 6500rpm, even dropped one on the "strip". No real drama untill we left town Sunday afternoon.

Made it home without too much trouble. The throttle was sticking a bit which made driving over Hoover dam a bit interesting. I think the anti-freeze from boiling over after losing a fan belt did the linkage in.

Must feel good being able to thrash on your own stuff. Being in business the customers come first, but there are times when "IT'S MY TURN". Truck looks outstanding, is there anything else you've planned to do besides drive it?

Damn that grill looks bitchin'!!!!
Thanks for the pics!.......love that interior too
guess I need to get my ass to Phoenix so I can look at that bad boy in person...great job....
That's one of the sweetest looking late model trucks i've ever seen. There's not a thing you could do to improve it's looks in my opinion (and i'm one to want to cut shit to pieces)... it's very singular in it's style.. I can't see it as anything else. Absolutely love it.

<font color="red"> I had so much fun Thursday night/Friday morning helping finish up. I really wish you guys had let me know you were working on it sooner. Damn, I could have saved Len's skin from being rubbed off. It looks awesome! It's even more pretty, I mean handsome, in person. Great design ideas. I learned a lot of stuff and can't thank you enough for letting me pester ya a bit.

Great paint scheme! TWO thumbs up!
El Pol, I think that is the nicest 60's model truck I have seen. The grill looks like it was made for it. The paint is perfect. Ya'll did good. TP
It looks better in person. Most excellent job...

We've been seeing glimpses of that truck for quite some
time. Glad to finally see some action shots on the road.
That's quite a bit of confidence to finish building it and
run to Vegas the next day. Was the shakedown run to the
gas station for the first fill up?
That Deyo is a travelling helper, he was just here in Texas
tearin shit up a couple weeks ago.

I concur...two thumbs up! The paint scheme, grille treatment, stance...it all works. Fantastic job.
What's the motor-vation? Looks to be a big block in the open hood pic, but I can't make it out exactly.
It's amazing what you can accomplish with a lot of determination and a goal in just a matter of weeks.
The engine in that truck is a very potent 427 Chevy. The truck looks fantastic and plain hauls ass as well. I was really glad to see it out there. It's been a long time coming.
Thanks to ElP for parking next to me, that's the only way my old yella heap will end up in any pictures http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
Holy Shit Steve!!! That Truck is fine. Very cool for a "late model" PU http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Who gets the credit for the paint design??

This is such a coincidence...
My brother is just days from getting a great deal on a PU from nearly the same vintage as this one. He asked me the other day to do some renderings so that he could try to decide on paint and I told him I thought two - maybe three tone or scallops would be cool. That paint looks almost exactly like what was floating around in my head!!! Different colors maybe but the lines are right there. I was trying to "hide" or "camouflage" the area above the grill. You know? Visually shorten the lines there?
I will be directing him to this post none-the-less. Last night he was asking me if I thought going the gasser way would be cool. I am worried about that look. I am trying real hard to see it, but when I think gasser I think Willy's/Anglia. Is that wrong? I am too young to know - they probably made everything into a gasser - they were a little more adventureous back then.
I should have been paying closer attention during the gasser posts......
