Hello! My name is Andy, and I am from Horseheads NY. I am currently building a '50 Chevy Coupe. I lowered the lid 4 inches, and leaned the B and C pillars forward (the roof line now nicely compliments the rear quarters). I recently completed the frame (Chassis Engineering front and rear). I have a 350 Chevy and a 700R4 installed. My next few jobs are:

-install '67 Olds tilt column
-wire
-rebuild rear brakes ('57 Chevy rear)

Enentually, I plan on the darkest blue primer I can find (PPG has many new shades of primer coming out), with flat white scallops .I am leaning towards painting the roof flat white as well - thoughts? Wide whites on open steelies, indian blanket interior, and pinstriping galore...

Even then it won't be done. There's always more...

Hey Andy,
Iwould forget the primer, instead use a basecoat color and then top with PPG flexed & flat. There's no uv inhibitor in primers they will turn chalky eventually whereas the flat clear will give a consistant finsh for years and years. Good luck man, you've got to come to some of the shows up our way this summer, there's a killer 50 or 52 up here you gotta see.

I have been hearing more and more about the flat clears. I may yet run a season or two in primer, as I want to get on the road, then continue with some body mods (ideally, mold in a merc grill surround, and do a floating grill bar, round the hood corners). My concern is blending the flat clear. In the end, though, I think you are right - the base and flat clear would be the way to go. Any thoughts on blending with the flat clear?

What shows are you referring to? I usually make it to Norwich and the Triple Cities show at Hickories.

Thanks for the reply - Andy

Thanks! It's actually a '67 Buick column, not Olds... I like that column for several reasons - I am going to chop my seat frame, and that is one way to get the wheel where I want it (who knows, maybe I'll let my wife drive it, and she can adjust it  ) With some minor shaving, it will fit in the stock column drop. Also, for a tilt column, it isn't bulky or covered in plastic. There is no ignition on that column, so I plan on staying with the dash key/button ignition set up. Last of all, my Dad gave it to me - it's hard not to like the occasional freebie! I think it will look nice with a '59 Impala wheel on it... maybe a '61.
