case of beer, a few buddies and a couple bb guns.
seriously, pick up the big nasty green pellet d-con. and put it around the garage floor for a week. just dont let the kid out there.
or get you ride down to an 1/8th tank of fuel and start her up and close the garage door. (you might not want to be in the garage during this time. Then start hunting for bodies.

We get the fruit rats down here in attic when the oranges start falling off the trees

I put the green blocks up there with the Large size traps, the green stuff de-hydrates them and they look for water or food.

Put a little peanut butter on the traps and you won't have to hunt for the smelly little carcasses in the attic, or, you can leave them and the smell goes away in a few days because of the drying action of the green blocks.

FONZI, Try placing a bar of Irish Spring soap in the car. I had a problem with mice getting in my cars and was told to put a bar of Irish Spring in the car, I have not had a problem with mice in the car this year. It might work for rats.

had the same prob (when i had a garage), put out poison, tied it on safety wire and not let the dog in, thought i was safe. bad idea, the fuckers took it off the wire and i found the shit in my yard! stay away from poisons. plus they have a habit of wedging themselves in terrible places when they go to die so there is a chance you wont be able find it or get to it when you do and will have to deal with the sick rancid rotting smell. the bb gun thing? c'mon... (maybe i lost my sense of humor this morning here at work). this is serious... they can eat a lot of shit up and wiring too. man, i feel for ya, i'd say borrow a cat or get a big nasty one from the humane society and dump the fucker out when u're done w/ it or return it to the pound. traps dont work either btw. if any exterminators out there have good ideas i'm all ears.

Get a cat.

As inside pets they're not my thing at all. As outside pets they are extremely effective at eliminating rodents, and they're fairly low maintenance.

My mom has an outdoor cat that she basically feeds, and he stays around & keeps the rodents away. And since other cats would have to pass his food dish in order to get into the back yard, he'll pretty much fight any cat that comes too close (and he doesn't ever seem to lose). The neighborhood cats seem to have picked up on this, as they rarely come around. He pretty much just hangs out in the background and doesn't get in the way. He's really a pretty cool cat, and I'm not a cat person at all. He's kinda funny.

PurplePickup posted this on the RRT awhile back. Not sure if it will work with rats, don't see why not.

"I think I wrote about this a year ago, but this is what keeps the mice out of my log cabin up north and my cars that are in storage. I usually keep it in the barn but I brought it out to take a picture. The beer can has holes drilled right in the middle of the ends and spins freely on the threaded rod and is covered with peanut butter. The mice walk up the ramp and since they can't quite reach the can, they jump onto it then it spins and they fall into the anti freeze in the bottom. I just put some freshly drained anti freeze in it a week ago and caught these two critters already.

When Fat Cat and Enjenjo were here they improved the design with the rod and beer can mounted lower in the bucket so you could put the lid on. You'd have to cut a slot in the side for the ramp so the mice could get in but dogs and cats couldn't get in and munch on the mice. I haven't made one like that yet."

If you want a cat, my buddy has a few that he's looking to give away in fullerton. they keep his rodent problem down to a minimum at the complex he manages but he has too many now... PM me if you want.

If you do get a cat, please make sure you get it fixed as not to add to the cat/dog overpopulation problem.

mothballs may work. but if you got kids its not something to leave around. pull your interior out.they will chew up everything.also they will stink your car up big time .i had mice in a car i let sit for a year...well a snake got in to eat the mice and when i went to start it a 3 foot black snake dropped on my legs from under the dash.i screamed like a little girl and ran a block before i figured out he couldnt chase me

Our exterminator used some kinda bait that the ccritters eat and it makes them thirsty. The eat the bait, leave the house looking for water and then die.

Denise...I'm scared of you guys! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif That's a great idea...definitely "a better mouse trap"...

Go rent the movie "Of Unknown Origin" starring Peter Weller...watch it late at night, then go right to bed! (This works even better if you have little children visiting in a creeky old house!)

I dated a chick that lived in a part of Detroit known as Del-Ray. We were sitting on her couch watching "Cujo" one night, when I saw a big black fur ball eating from a dish in her kitchen. I asked her what the cat's name was, and she said she didn't have a cat! When I asked her what was wandering around behind the couch and in the kitchen, she calmly said that they were rats! Her reasoning was that if you left food out for them, that they wouldn't bother you!

(That was a very short realtionship!)

Before using poison, consider that the little bastards will find the most difficult hiding spot to die in so that you'll have to smell their rotting corpse.

I had one wedge himself way back into a wall right next to my office - impossible to get to without demolition - and I (and my clients) had to smell him for a month and a half!

It was so foul, I would have torn the wall out if I could have just narrowed down approximately where he was at.

Since then I only use traps.

anti freeze will kill them .it tastes sweet to them.i had a problem with skunks .they drank some of that and a day later they were belly up in the church parking lot.do not put it any where your pets can get to it .a little under the seat might work

If you've seen them, you have an infestation larger than you can imagine. Killing one or two isn't going to cut it. A cat won't get all of them and probably won't even try.

Use that poison shit. Also look them up on the net. There's a lot of info out there. They can live on moisture collected in standing cardboard so get rid of all the boxes. There are also some poisens that are fairly safe for pets etc.

Good luck.

We had an infestation in a shed. My dog was killing 2 and 3 a week (along with possums and any other rat-like thing she found). I had to eventually tear down the shed.

You need a .357 magnum like Clint used in the Dirty Harry movies.
I read this recently somewhere: 1. there are more rats than humans in the world 2. rats outnumber humans in NYC 3. rats can have sex up to 20 times per day 4. rats can have a litter every 8 weeks 5. if you have found one rat, you have a lot more (as they say; where there is smoke, there is fire).
You need one mean mother of a cat to get rid of rats. Some rats can take a cat on any day of the week.

Denise that is cool! I hate cats almost as bad as rats so that option is out. Plus, my dog likes cats for lunch....I have not actually seen any rats. Except the dead one my dog killed. Talked to the neighbors (condo garages connected) They have caught 3 or 4 w/traps. I live close to the dump so i think i am pretty much screwed. I just wanna keep em out of my ride. Guess I will just have to drive it more or something. I will try the soap though. Probabally wouldn't hurt to carry sum soap with me anyways.....haha thanks guys and gals.

Ok old school farmer tricks . we get BIG RATS in the barn. I mean cat killers they are attracted to the horse feed and cattle milk and all of that. but spinner traps work well. Its this spring loaded trap. they just take there heads off.or breaks there neck the body falls into the trap and its puts it in a holding cell. pretty nasty but the next rat being curious wants to know whats in the box and smells his buddy. WACK there the next one. Not the best with kids around even if the input is small it not small enough for a little guys hand.
Another good one is this http://www.epestsupply.com/images/Products/pest/ratzap2000.jpg
kinda an electric chair for rats. Inside only and dont get her wet.

The best thing that i have found to use since i got little boys myself is ferret shit or a ferret its self. Its stinky nasty smelling kinda like cat spray but the rats will stay away from it. The ferret will murder a rat with a vengence butt they like to save the heads a trophy or at least mine did. DeCon is the shit but if you have a dog killing the rats then the Decon can effect the dog if he get a rat just after he has been in it. Glue traps are kinda fun but then you have a live rat stuck to a hunk on glue. I cant tell ya how man i have killed with a 22 pistol or a hay fork.

If ya want my skinny barn cat "spot" let me know ill ship her out. just dont return her. She kills everything she can find. rabbits, rats mice, moles, the wifes songbirds. beats the shit out of the dog.

FYI the dryer sheets will get rid of mosquestos not rats.

I had a rat problem in a shop I used to rent and set out two traps.
Next morning two dead rats.
Set the two traps again, next morning two ore dead rats.
This went on for a coupleof weeks till I got tired of throwing the smelly things in the dumpster so I gave up.
The rats out number us.
I was working out in the garage here the other evening and heard a rustling amongst the "stuff" in the rafters of the garage, that went from right overhead over to the part above the laundry room.
I don't know if it was a rat or a possum.
I found some droppings on a box on the back of my Model A. they were about 3/8" long..That's bigger than rat droppings isnt it?
I haven't seen a possum in the yard for, oh, maybe a week. them and raccoons...
I hear they taste like chicken!
keep your car out in the sunshine in the day.
By the way YOU will like the smell of the moth balls way less than the rats do.
I've heard they don't like cedar , or is that just moths?

Oh yeah, ferrets. My Dad told me a story about when he was young their barn got infested with rats after loading it up with fresh straw/hay (can't remember which). His neighbor had a ferret that they turned loose in the barn. My Dad and his brothers covered all the exits and once the rats get a whiff of the ferret, they hightail it out of the barn. When the rat tried to escape the barn, BAM, killed the bastards. Filled a few bushel baskets full.

I had a rat problem about a year ago, and I couldnt catch the damn things for the life of me! So as I walked thru a $1.00 store one day they had these glue traps that were about the size of a sheet of paper. Anyhow, I started to catch 2 and 3 a night. Cleared up the problem real fast. Cool this was the were still alive, and you can poke at them and watch them TRY to get away. When I was done I put them in a trash bag and told my son to go bang them on the sidewalk a couple times. Shit, fun for the whole family!

Okay Fonz...I say we build the MOTHER of all rat traps based on the spinning beer can trap...which I love, by the way. Let's make it big, or make several with that washbucket-size anti-freeze trap...have a couple high, a couple low, and a couple about mid-level throughout the garage(s)...we should put a couple in your neighbors garage too...The little bastards will think they're in Disneyland with all the new rides...! You know me Fonz..I'm a giver. I will do my best to provide you with as many beer cans as you'll need to accomplish this mission....I wonder if RATS stole my torque wrench? Maybe they're building a RAT ROD of their own?

don't even try it..... my aunt put two boxes in her attic... it gets damn hot in Texas in the summer.... fumigated her whole house....couldn't live in the house without tearing up and feeling sick...... we had a really bad case of cane rats... they made a nest inside the wood covering of our fireplace ( not brick outside) the little bastards were in the attic...and our dog kept trying to dig through walls to get them....took us two years...tried everything...what finally got them was two plastic posion "houses" from a exterminator.. you use a key to open the houses and refill with a decon pellet....they like to hide in the houses....and while they are there...they snack a bit....it was so bad our cat was going out in the garage and bringing baby rats into the house to play with them...

Its a tin box about a 2" ish hole in the front its got a crank up dial on the front like and old egg timer. crank her up and set he down There is a trigger inside of the box. when its set off. the triger snaps a piece of thin rod that bent in a square flips around flying around just inside of the door. since the trigger is on just the inside of the door it breaks or severs there heads on the door frame and suck the body in at the same time (most of the time). The rod makes 2 rotations when it goes off. the second swing clearing the door and packing the rat body in a second box on the side. just in case you dont kill him. The door way to the box has a one way swing door. so it shuts right behind him. The one i have is OLD. It was given to me by my wifes great uncle when we got the farm from him. I have seen alot of the mice versons of it but not alot of the big rat. You might want to check with a feed store or somewhere like that to find one.

Well something I can actually talk about now... I have gotten 14 rats in the last 4 days... they were in the attic and on the roof and climbing the trees... so you first got to clean up any places they like to nest ... then you secure any openings they will use to get in with quarter inch wire mesh... if you can... then first use big rat traps... get the ones that have a inch and a half by inch and a half flat trigger.. not the ones that just have a narrow trigger thats about the size of a large light switch... they dont work cuz they dont hold enought bait and arent all that sensitive .. but the ones with the big trigger (its yellow in color) man if you even fart near that thing it goes off... they have them at home depot.. I even got two double hook ups with those traps .. and the other ones would get triggered but not catch them.. when you bait it use fresh peanut butter its got a strong oder and they love the shit out of that crap... make sure you smear it on the wooden part of the trap itself (on the part where the trigger is) cuz they get greedy and want more and eventually get to the trigger.. and thier greedy buddies eat at the edge while the dominant one takes the trigger... the baits are a problem cuz those lil fuckers die in the weirdest places and stink forever... so do the traps for a couple of weeks.. oh and when you catch one and it dies in the trap dump it with the trap and all ..they recognize the smell of another dead rat and wont touch the trap... well good hunting.. I got rid of em ... Sammy
