View Full Version : 39 brakes on a 30 (Buick) was-Spindle help

I have a 1930 and a 1939 Buick that I am trying to get the spindle off. The thirty has a threaded retaining screw which has been removed. The cap is off the top.
The question......there is a slot in the top of the kingpin, is it threaded or a press fit? Does it come out the top as I suspect or the bottom?
Now...the 39....No head on the retaining pin, is it press fit? The Kingpin is flush top and bottom, Press fit?
Same as before...it comes out the top right?
Might seem like a dumb ass question but i'd rather ask then screw it up and have to post what an idiot I really am.
Thanks,
Stevie G

Do they not have a cross bolt, about half way up,like the Fords?

That's the retaining screw/pin I was refering to.
I got it out on the 30 and i'm guessing it's a press fit on the 39 (Since there is no head and it's flush).
I just want to be saure wich way they come out so I don't screw it up.
The only books I have found so far are Body manuals.
Thanks for looking,

On 52-54 my book says to pop the cap off the top of the kingpin by piercing it and prying it off. Drive out the lock pin and drive the kingpin out the bottom....

I'm guessing the locking pins are tapered.
A quick measurement with a Vernier Caliper will tell you which way they come out.

Then just use my Balljoint press to push the King pins up?
Cool!
Knowing is one thing, having someone else confirm it gives me a warm fuzzy.
I just found the thread about removing Kingpins in the junkyard and that kind of firmed things up for me.

My old book say that 35 to 52 are all the same as what Rocky said.

Got the uprights off the 39 today. Will try again tomorrow with the upright in a vise.
my balljoint press wasn't big enough so I guess I'll have to look for a C-clamp to try pressing out the Kingpins on the 30.
It looks like the spindles from the 39 will go on the 30 axle. I have to get it apart to make sure the Kingpins are the same size or at least find out what size to ream new bushings to .
Thanks for all the replies.
Now I know why I hang out here.

I was just helping a friend of mine put new spindles on my 54 Special this weekend. We drove the lock pin and kingpins out with a punch and a hammer. They came out fairly easy that way. Used a socket a little smaller than the diameter of the kingpin to get it started and then drove it out the rest of the way with a chisel in the slot that's on top of the kingpin.

Well, with everyones advice and info, the thirty now has juice brakes from a 39. The axle boss' are different thicknesses so I either have to machine the axle or maybe go with a torrington and a spacer. Thoughts?
The Kingpins are on a few thousandths different so all I have to do is re-ream the bushings in the 39 spindles.
Thanks gang,

Now I just have to get the body down out of the rafters and fit it all back together.

Anyone here ever change the camber angle on an I-beam axle?
The tires visibly tip in at the top.
Is this better left to a spring and axle shop or can it be done "At home" if I have the proper tools?

I think I'd rather have an alignment shop do it if it was mine.

Can anyone recomend a good shop in the ATL area?
