View Full Version : American Graffiti - '67 Chevy question.

This might be old news, but I was watching Graffiti on DVD, frame by frame, and noticed the door on the blooper '67 is smashed, from the back, as though someone opened it in traffic.
Maybe why it's there? Did it happen during filming or while they were setting up? Anyone know the story?

I think the bigger question is what the hell is a '67 doing on the street in American Graffiti... 5 years prior to the car's existence. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Must not be much to do in Wisconsin.

Yeah, there's a '67 Chevy that snuck in there. Also the rear quarter of an early '70s Toyota shows up in one scene, and California didn't have left turn arrows in '62... bla bla bla http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

No big deal. Minor flubs that don't affect my enjoyment of the movie at all.

I got the inside scoop on the "late model" Caprice... the car was left there by someone by accident. George actually spotted the car when they were in the cutting room, but decided to leave it because the scenes were too good, and the film was dark. Also, at the time, they didn't have dvd's or home videos... so the thought of some guy sitting at home watching the movie over and over and over... and then frame by frame, was very remote.

That's a 1967 CAPRICE. Notice the window contour of the c-pillar, and that it's not a fastback style like the Impalas are. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Who spotted the mistake on the mistake web site?

They say that the wrecked '55 Chevy was a 4 door sedan. But if you look closely, it is actually 2 door hard top with phony posts, silver painted steelies, automatic trans and stock front suspension. Plus, the trunk is open before the car bursts into flames, but is closed while the car burns. (hey, better to wreck some clapped out hard top than to wreck the bitchin' one)

But then again, what does it really matter?

If you have American Graffiti and two much time forget the 67 junk heap and look for the red 32 roadster with the white headers. Axle sez there is a Gasser in the movie somewhere. I pose a question to all the whitewall tires in the world " Where were you in American Graffiti?? "

in the AG MISTAKES site it mentions the lights flashing yellow in the cruising scenes were set so for the filming,,,, however, in san rafael, the town i grew up in, where a lot of the cruising scenes were filmed the lights went to a flashing yellow automatically at night, so in my experience that is a false bit o' trivia. the other towns that were used for scenes i can not speak for. HELP... I NEED A LIFE.

no see, kustomizers modernized older cars, or current production cars for the time, right? that's simply a mildly worked 58 or 59 biscayne...

I'm a real detail fanantic I notice that the very first time I saw the movie. It's an Impala 4dr. Caprices don't have segment taillights, and I believe tha caprices were only offered as two doors in '67.KK

Like it was said earlier, only porn (and maybe Dukes of Hazzard or Fall Guy) should be watched frame by frame... DOH and Fall Guy cause the wrecks are soo cool!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You WOULD watch the wrecks, Jay! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now "Jody"....Mmmmmmmmmm!!!!

The Detail Mongers SLAY me...

too bad they edited out the scene with the retards at the fair in the DVD version of Dirty Larry, Crazy Mary"...that scene MADE the movie...when they were arguing over what the Charger had in it...

"It was a Cleveland with a Purple Cam!"

"Naw, it was a stock block Hemi with cowl induction...I saw the decal!"

SamIyam
04-07-2004, 02:14 PM
So did they say "Cleveland with a purple cam" on purpose? Purple cams are Mopar and Cleveland Ford... and then Cowl Industion and Hemi are bass akwards too... is that why it was cool? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, they said all sorts of contradictory bullshit...I dunno if it was on purpose to make the hillbillies sound like morons...or just more Hollywood bullshit and poor writing that came out sounding stupid!

I've only seen that brief scene with those lines left in on my buddy's version of the movie...on BETA, no less!! In the other versions I've seen, the cop asks who saw the car and one dude says something like "Well, it had a racing stripe".

Not nearly as funny!

I know that the very first scene where Toad wrecks his Vespa, was not supposed to happen that way, but it was so funny they left it in. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
