THought I'd post a few pics from my collection of Hot Rods from around here from the mid to late 50's. There's more at my web page. This one had a Packard Patrician V8. was raced at Cayuga in Ontario and New Baltimore Mi. Beat Connie Kalitta's 40 Willys there. THis car belonged to Bernie DesJardins of Tecumseh Ontario

Here's another one. Don't know the 3 window, but the 34 Cabriolet belonged to Phil Dutka and had a real hot flathead in it - used to beat most of the O/H's. Phil had a hole to look through in the firewall - used to duck down so you couldn't see him and pass the whole row of Hot Rods on the way to the drags at speed.

Mike....I think I asked you this one before. Who was the guy that owned the A roadster with the 427 side oiler in it? Mid 60's to early 70's. That car got me hooked on hot rods at a young age. Oh yeah, have any pics of it?

Great stuff, thanks for posting. I like the simplicity of that dragster. Looks like the front wheels came right off of a scrambler.

Interesting the dragster is running a radiator too. I'm guessing it was probably removed the next week to get rid of that "excess weight on the drag strip". http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Joe....it might have been blue but I thought it was gray. But that was a looong time ago when I was just a kid. All I could do is focus on the 427 s/o Ford.
I have to ask you, what is a dude in NJ doing with a picture of a Model A from the Windsor area?

"Ontario George Fitzios" and he still has it. Here's an old pic and a new one and I have an even older one on my webpage. It was grey way back then, but it's blue now (and has been for about 25 years. George has owned it for well over 30 years. I don't believe it was ever injected, and I've been a friend of George's for a long time, but it did have a wild tunnel ram on it that was home made by a guy in Michigan name of Fred Flecinstien. I might have the spelling off a bit, but Fred is still around too and recently had a very nice flathead powered glass deuce roadster.

I've been colecting them for a couple of years, but it's tough - some of these older guys won't part with their pics long enough for me to get them copied and others will show me the pics, but don't want copies made. It's a shame because they'll disapear and no one will be able to enjoy their efforts. Fast Elvis has some pics of a great model T coupe that was my all time favourite, but I haven't been able to find pics of it before it was burned and turned into a typical 70's street rod - The car was in this area for quite a while but has disapeared now - It would be a great car to clone. I'll post pictures here from time to time with some great stories to go along with them. I'm glad you guys are enjoying them - it makes my efforts seem worthwhile.

This is Zorro ( the first version) Went well over 100 MPH at Cayauga and New Baltimore Mi. With the Packard Patrician V8 out of the roadster in the first picture (Golden Rod)on page 1. The guys used to swap the motor into the dragster every 2nd weekend and race the roadster on opposite weekends. This is the "Push Rods" membership: L to R: Gary Duffy (who I must thank for a great number of these pics) Bernie DesJardins, Paul Marion, Armond LaChance, Roy DesJardins, Dick Roy, Tony Soulierre, "Chief" Lesard, Mike Soulliere. Mike worked for me for a number of years before I got into this deal and I was never able to ask him much about those days or if he had pictures. Mike passed on a couple of years ago -- it's a shame because he was a great guy.

Here it is guys - my all time favourite 50s Hot Rod! I've been looking for pics of this car for a couple of years and (Many) thanx to Fast Elvis, I now have some. This is the "T for Two", built by Roy DesJardins of the Tecumseh PushRods. This car had a little Red Ram Dodge Hemi and appeared in Rodding & Restyling magazine in 1964. Roy, his buddy and his dog were on their way to Florida from Windsor Ontario Canada, fighting snow storms etc. on the way and pulling a 12' travel trailer. Shortly after this article was photographed the 2 guys joined the US Air Force and were stationed for some time in California. The T and the trailer made the trip back and forth quite often when the guys were on leave. On one trip back to Ca. they stopped at a gas station to fill up and noticed a cop in a brand new Ford police intercepter patrol car watching them leave. When they thought they were well clear of the cop, they took off and drove at a very rapid pace until they needed to stop again for fuel. This time they filled up and went in for lunch. On the way out the same cop pulled in and stopped them wanting to know how fast they were going. Of course the guys refused to admit it so the cop told them he wouldn't ticket them if they 'fessed up since he saw the Air Force uniforms in the car. At this point Roy admitted to probably doing 140! The cop said that would be about right because he had been chasing them wide open for over two hours and hadn't been able to catch up.

I just talked to Roy DesJardins today - builder or mentor to the guys that built most of these cars and he says that 6 cylinder inline dragster was actually from the London Ontario area, but raced with them. It was owned by Bob Hayward who went on to race the Miss Supertest unlimited Hydroplanes and was killed in one of these races. Miss Supertest was always powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin V12. If you'd like to see more of these please mention it and we can keep the post on page 1 for a little longer.

I missed this thread the first time around, I'm glad it popped back to the top. When I saw the heading "real 50's hot rods" I wasn't thinking Ontario.

I'm going to e-mail this link to my father, he rodded, raced and rallied in southern Ontario and Michigan through the late 50's and early 60's. He's got some cool stories, and probably knew, or knew of, some of the cars and guys in these old photos. He went to GMI and had a customized '55 Chev in '56, then got into Porsches and MGs in the early 60's and it was all sportscars after that.

Great stuff Ragtop. Thanks for posting the shots.

This is a sad story about one of my all time favorite cars,...... this picture was taken in 1976, a friend of mine named Ron found this car in the upper,( it was a true 50's survivor ) brought it back and put it on the road as-is just cleaned up, a mighty Olds with 3 leakers, LaSalle trans, and one of the most cool black and white T&R int. I had ever seen,...... when it went up for sale I tried to put all the money together but you could almost buy a new car for the $6,500 asking price at the time,...... it was sold to a cop that beat the crap out of it, then to another guy and another,..... finally a young guy got ahold of it, tore it apart and built a Graffiti clone out of it,..... it was in the book a couple years ago "Deuce Coupe" ,...... this thing still gives me chills !

I don't mean to hijack this thread,.....but if you guys are interested here are some pictures of MHRA's Dragstrip " Motor City Dragway" the dragstrip is why the Detroit Autorama was started in the first place, to raise money to build this. the Dragway is long abandoned. but Autorama lives on as a part of Hot Rod History !

In looking at all the pictures of both the "Hot Rods" and the "Drag Cars" I didn't see any that resemble what some are building today "As the were back in the day"

In a way I'm glad, I was beginning to think all my memory was gone, cause I sure as hell don't remember any "Rat Rods" running the streets in the 50's and 60's.

I'm Glad you said that , My thoughts exactly -- not a "rat " in the lot!!
If your rod had rust, was not painted & had moth eaten upholstery -it was cause you didn't have the bucks to do better --yet --but it was sure coming when you could.

WOW! I haven't looked at this old post for a long time - didn't see the last few posts. Harm's Way - I know Harry. He still looks the same. I bought a deuce frame from him about 30 years ago and he helped arrange the sale of my deuce three window about 15 years ago. The Frank Mack car was incredible. It's too bad Frank got screwwed so bad when he sold it but it;s now in good hands eh! If you have more pics I'm sure we'd all love to see them.

Just found an early pic of this car. It is now back up on top of the frame and looking very nice again. The oupe was owned by George Beaumont back then.

Just found out the 6 cylinder dragster of Bob HAyward's had this written on the side "6 in a row - watch it go!" Bob went on to drive the Miss Supertest unlimited Hydroplane and was killed in the boat. Or did I already mention that? Old age!
Here's another pic of the "6 in a row, watch it go", plus a few more from Cayuga, to add to this great old thread.

I met with a group of old hot rodders for lunch yesterday and finally got a bunch of pics I'd been trying to get for years. These guys were the "El Dragos" from the Windsor/LaSalle Ontario area and had some terrific hot rods back in the mid 50s to mid 60s. I'll post a few at a time - enjoy! NO, I never did find any more pics of the T for Two. Too bad because it was the coolest car around in my book. After it burned the chassis was lengthend a bit and other mods were done to make it a 70s Street Rod and it just never was as nice. I'm sure the car is still out there somewhere - probably around Michigan or Ohio. Last know engine was a 428 Cobra jet. It would be cool to know where it went. Here's a few more pics

The little black A Cabriolet was first built with a Y block from a '56 Merc, then converted to a Buick Nailhead and it was blown. Ran 98 MPH in the quarter with those skinny little tires - Awesome. Most of the ELDragos are still around although a few have passed away. I think only one of them is still involved with Hot Rods today - he has a nice '53 Ford pickup, reversed rims with a flatty and a hood scoop they used on the '53 Ford big trucks. He also has one of the nicest '55 Birds I've ever seen - Mercury wagon tailights, real Halibrands, stock Y block with a little Holley on it. Nice!

MARK! _ Just found another copy of the Rodding and Restyling magazine from 1964 on EBAy - I got it for $12.00! I gave your copy to Roy - he never saw the magazine even though he knew they had done the feature. He was super excited to get it but now that I found a good T Coupe body I was kinda wishing I had it back. Really glad to find another copy. Trigger and Ed are coming down for a visit soon to see metal master Jim Bailie and they're gonna deliver the dropped axle etc. I bought for the T - come on down with them if you can.
