Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do about a Deadbeat Member?? .On the 23rd of September I contacted a member regarding a part he had advertised on the H.A.M.B. agreed on a price for the item. I proceeded to send him a money order as payment in full. Well here we are 5 weeks later and no part and he will not answer the phone or reply to any e-mail..
Any suggestions??......thanks...nomader

I was just going to make a suggestion, if this is the right place to do it, when I saw this post. I also had a HAMB deal go bad with a person who seemed to have a complete car to part out. This was in early August. We agreed on a price on the item that I was interested in and since he was allegedly in Canada I got an International Postal MO and sent it off to him on August 12. Long story short, I emailed Ryan a few seeks ago and he took it upon himself to contact the person to find out why he hadn't shipped the item. I appreciate his efforts. However Ryan emailed me and said that the person doesn't remember me. I also copied Ryan on emails that the person had sent to me indicating that the item would ship, had shipped, and that he would be contacting me with tracking info at various times.

So, I guess I'm out my money and the part. No big deal really, but what bothers me is that the HAMB really doesn't have a system in place to guard against these people. I was told that the persosn doesn't remember me and that's that. If I want to bother trying to recoup my loss I now have to go back through the postal service and trace the path of my money order. Again, no big deal, but guess what? I have to pay a fee to do it!!! I would think that if somebody advertised, say an Ardun flathead for $20,000 on HAMB and didn't come through, something would be done in short order.

Anyway, my suggestion is how about something like a HAMB mafia to take care of these characters? I know at least three or four HAMB guys from Jersey who would gladly break a few legs for a small fee. The lack of some kind of checks and balances makes me wary about buying anything else from the classifieds. Thanks for your time.

Oops. Are you Canadian Mafia? I was joking about the broken leg thing---Sir.

Seriously, I have never had a problem with a Canadian car guy before this one. Hell, a fellow from Alberta once sent me parts by bus and told me to pay him if I like them or send them back if I didn't. The person I'm talking about is from BC. Thanks for your help.

The deals you make are your own. The HAMB will not get between any deals.
If someone knowingly is ripping anyone off then after some PM's determine problems, then we put up a "Deadbeat" seller or buyer list.

Your very first post on this board was to post a seller not replying to you, and it is my understanding after some checking that you did not even do that deal on this board at all, so no we won't go between any deal on this.

If you paid by a Postal Money order then contact your local postal inspector.

For the record, there are over 18,000 members on this site for buying and selling items FREE in the classifieds and Moderators will not take sides or go between deals.

Paid by money order, contact the postal inspector.
If you paid for by Paypal, contact them.

Good Luck,

This is my personal opinion on this... not the Jalopy Journals...

I would take the persons post count and history on the hamb seriously when buying from them... the trust system is just that. You need to trust the guy on the other end.

If a guy has one or two posts... beware.

If he has a couple thousand hes been around here and is part of the HAMB community.

I think there are steps you can take to protect yourself when purchasing from other hambers... YOU need to take responsibility for these steps and protect yourself.

I don't think its fair to say Ryan should be responsible for some deal you struck with a newbie or rogue hamber...

-Tracking
-Money Orders or Paypal with tracking
-Emails and documentation
-phone numbers etc etc...

From there you can take it up legally and you have documentation... if its something Ryan cant handle in an inquiry email to that member-

HAMBERS need to make there own checks and balances...

Thats my opinion.
