I was making up a front motor mount (for sbc in a 49 f1)that looks like a horseshoe in the middle bolting to the front of the engine and going out to the frame and bolting it to the top of the frame with a single bolt on each side mounted on rubber donuts, my concern is possible getting some stress crack or possibly sagging the top channel of the frame, I thought about two bolts or one long one going thru the top and bottom channel but will that weaken the frame to much?

I could make up a chunk of angel iron to reinforce the top channel of the frame but figure there has to be a certain amount of flex otherwise I'd be back to them cracks or am I way out in left field rambling and worrying about things I ought not to be?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sounds like your making a homespun version of the mount that Speedway sells.

As long as your frame rails aren't rusty, you should be okay.

(Gussets or re-inforcements can't HURT, though.)

I'd also think about adding some sort of side mounts to the bellhousing area to relieve some stresses there and take a little of the strain off of your front motor mount.

(That way, you'll have a trans mount, bellhousing mount and front motor mount.)

I tried looking up that speedway place when someone mentioned in another post but I keep getting race tracks and shopping malls! anyone got a url?

I thought about the bellhousing mount since my old chevies came bolted to the front of the block with no trans mount to keep the twisting to a minimum but I am using an automatic transmission and figured the alluminum might crack if I tried a mount there as well even a mount thru to the transmission to the block, might be I'll do that anyways once I get it all bolted in solid where things will line up in their proper places

might be I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill but I'd rather not have to redo this once its all done and find out I missed something or wrecked something

Try:
www.speedwaymotors.com (http://www.speedwaymotors.com)

Don't know how complete their site is...but that should be it.

Something like this here...

(I didn't see frame mounts for a 49 F1...they listed 53 and newer Ford trucks...but the engine mount is universal, they just offer different frame mounts to go with it in different popular chassis. )

thats something like I was building yes, but instead of having that #2 piece I was going straight across to the frame that #2 piece looks like a good idea, its bolts to the inside of the frame rather than resting on the top, I'm gonna make up that setup tomorrow then

thanks! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had originally wanted to use side mounts, I went to both our auto wreckers in search of the old style mounts that bolt to the engine with the rubber built in with the 2 holes for the pin but there was none to be had.....

Maybe try the 'newer' style Chevy side mounts.

(The frame mount is what you buy when they need to be replaced...as the part that bolts to the engine is just a steel "cup" that covers the frame mount with the rubber inside of it)

Ask your parts counterperson for a set of motor mounts for a G-body. (Say, 1983 Monte Carlo with a 305 if they bug you for ann application.) They should run ya about $8-$15 each. Then look for the 'cups' bolted to the block in a wrecking yard or at your dealer.

The frame mounts have a flat mounting surface with four bolt holes in them. Easy to adapt to ???

Just a thought!!

Okay get the Speedway Catalog. look at the universal mount that will bolt between the frame rails I have one in a 49 F-1 with a drop axle it works good

thats what I have right now out of the "donor" truck, I'd have to weld a piece across the bottom and extend the sides to the frame, my concern though looking under the truck with that stuff bolted on this afternoon was how close it is to the axle ( we got terrible roads here) and having to leave enough room to remove the oilpan should I have to sometime down the road, if it wasn't for those concerns that would be an easy fix for sure, I got the anti freeze and crud washed out of my hair so things may look better tomorrow with refreshed patience

Let me know I have a 49 with a drop axle and SBC and I'm building a 50 with a Volare and Sbc

I just got to do some gussetting, and grinding then I'll take a photo!

I had made it out of that diamond plate but cut in on the reverse side so now it faces backwards.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

PS I saved the templates I made and can trace them onto paper if anyone is interested, fold them up and stuff them in an envelope
