Whew!!! What a day, A good group of great people pulling together to give a well deserved Hamber, Denise (HRLC) a helping hand with her (BOY) hot rod.
It started a couple of days ago for me by trying to shove all of my junk into a corner so we had a place to work. It ended a couple of hours ago when Jim C, his lovely wife Judy and Denise left for the motel to get some rest.
Tomorrow They will return, help me do a quick cleanup and Jim C will leave for home (Missouri) and Denise and Big Olds will head for Charlotte to get the hood that Kustombuilder and Cheeryblossom took home to give some final detailing.
Denise will post about the whole shindig when she gets home. Right now I'm headed for the shower and a good nights rest.

Thanks to all of those who baked, cooked, grilled and contributed.
Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this historical (and sometimes hestarical) event. Some of these guys worked their butts off. It was all for a good cause.
While you'll probably see many photos of actual work being done, here's a couple of "those other times".

Where do I even start???

First off I must thank HATCH for coming up with this idea and implimenting it. Without his vision, it never would have all come together.

Then theres my very special buddy FAB32. Yes, his shop is great, the most awesome one I've ever been in, but he's more then just a cool car guy with a cool shop. Frank (FAB32) is the most down to earth, caring, generous person I know. He's a true friend who listens to my troubles and woes, along with my dreams and desires, and gives me needed advice not only from his lifes experiences but from his heart as well. Thank you Frank, from the bottom of my heart, for an awesome weekend spent with many friends, not just car buddies, but true friends. We all worked our asses off but had an great time doing so and it was all possible because of you and your lovely wife Sharon's hospitality.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank JimC and his lovely wife Judy who drove all the way from Joplin, MO to help this weekend. I don't know how many miles it is but I do know they were on the road for over 16 on Friday to get to Frank's place. Jim and Judy are two of the nicest people in this world. It's no wonder FAB32's wife and JIMC's wife got along so well. They were chit chatting for hours on end like they've known each other for years. JIM, thank you for helping to make this weekend one of the most memoriable ever.

I'd also like to thank my very good buddy PURPLEPICKUP for coming. George has always been there for me and Big Olds thru the years and yesterday was no exception. George's guidance and encouragment thru the years has given me the strenght to try to do alot of mechanical things for myself and now, because you took the time to guide me thru some of the bodywork phases, I think I might have the confidence to try to do the rest of the sanding and body work myself. Thank you George, once again, for being there for me.... and for the spooning, that was one of the many highlights of the day http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd also like to thank KUSTOMBUILDER for the awesome hood peeking job. I know you spent many, many hours BEFORE you even got to Franks and then you spent ALL DAY yesterday standing over that hood again and then more hours today! You are a perfectionist! Thank you so much for all your hard work. I know your back was killing you, hence I owe you a backrub. I'd like to thank STUDEBOY for helping out KUSTOMBUILDER on the hood project. Everyone needs a right hand man plus moral support when your tackling a big project like peeking that hood. I'm sure Mike appreicated your help as much as I did.

I also want to thank CHERRYBLOSSOM for all the BBQing and food prep stuff that went on yesterday. You were a huge help and always fun to be around. We didn't get to spend as much time chatting girly stuff as we normally do but I sure hope you had a good time.

A specail thanks to LEVIS CLASSIC, KRITZ, and HATCH for all the welding expertise. All the patch panel areas look awesome. You can not tell where any work has been done anywhere on Big Olds. You guys rock!

I'd like to thank DONZIE, FUEL PUMP, FAST ELVIS, DIRTY T and JDUBBYA for all the tedious sanding and taping off you guys did. Big Olds is a huge car and there was lot that needed to be done. Without you guys, it never woulda gotten done in a day.

I'd like to thank ENJENJO, FART CAT, and HOT ROD GIRL for coming and helping out. I sure hope you guys had fun cuz I sure enjoyed your company and I'm looking forward to the BBQ trailer build at your place in a couple of weeks.

There's a few guys that I'd like to add a very special heartfelt thank you to for monatary donations. SHOEBOX72, HOT ROD PRIMER, and JIMC. You guys we're very, very generous. Me and Big Olds appreciate it very, very much. I had no clue how expensive body work materials are. Your generous donations eased that burden alittle. Thank you sooooo much.

Shoebox72, it was loud inside alot of the time with the DA's, grinders, etc going. I never heard the phone ring. Sure wish you would have left a message. I would have called you back. There's always next time http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd like to add one more thank you and that's to a fellow that most of you don't know. His name is Eric Allen and he's a very talented painter buddy of Kritz's. He had expressed an interest in painting Big Olds so he came along for the day to check out the project and so him and I could meet and discuss things. He just didn't stand back and watch everyone else work, this guy jumped in with both hands and both feet. If he saw something that wasn't perfect, he made it perfect. He's a bodywork god. A perfectionist to the core. After dicussing, off to the side with a few folks, "who's going to actually spray the new primer on Big Olds", we all came to the conclusion that Eric would be the best man for the job and lucky for me he agreed. This kid knows what he's doing. You'll hear his name in the future thats for sure.

I'm hoping to get enough of the rest of the sanding and blocking done myself so that I can actually afford the cost of him painting copper shiney paint on Big Olds sometime soon.

Once again, a huge thank you to all that showed up yesterday to devote their time and effort to Big Olds and thanks to those that brought supplies and tools to share. I hope to be able to do the same for all of you one of these days.

Ryan, I'd also like to thank you for this specail place we call the HAMB. Without the HAMB I would have never met alot of these fine folk nor would I have the opportunity to make such awesome, lifelong friendships. Thank you once from the bottom of my heart.

Next time...lets just goof off http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif...mucho thanks to everybody...especially Frank for his generous offer of the shop....only problem is that now he has room to bring more stuff home....I think he needs some more drill presses...maybe we could chip in and get him a few. He has a couple more drill bits that don't have a permanant resting place.

All kidding aside...it sure was fantastic for a bunch of internet buddies to contribute their time, money, and talent for no pay....even decline overtime pay at their regular job just to come and be involved....and drive long distances to boot.... It was just plain cool. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

it was a great time and we all really enjoyed helping you out Denise. you do so much for so many other people and this board thats it's only fitting we give back to you.

sometimes my ambition gets the better of me and i volunteer for something stupid, like peaking that monster of a hood. (for those who don't know) i did it just like the recent magazine article but what they don't mention in there and what nobody told me -till i was in it up to my eyeballs- is that it is considered about the hardest body modification to pull off and pull off correctly. man do i have some work in that sucker. but it was worth it for such a great friend. just a little more "finessing" and it's be ready for ROADSTAR to get his hands dirty (since he bailed on us and went to Vegas for some kind of striper convention or something http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and do the prime, sand, prime thing and teach Denise the finer points of blocking out a body.

good times, keep the pictures comin...

HE'S going to be a shiny metalic, medium hue, copper color. I thought I'd do a copper tinted primer now but I was told that it would have come out looking brownish, not copper. So we just used a grey, high build primer yesterday. It's a start http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

KustomBuilder, take your time on the hood. I really like this hoodless look. Kind of reminds me of my buddy Big Ric. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just Steve, It's hard to believe everything that has happened in Big Olds life since that very cold, dark nite I came to pick him up. Remember our conversation of my plans for him? Here the "new" rear end. I've always wanted to lower the bumper and bring it in closer to the body. Bumper was taken off, holes filled to perfection. FAB32 is going to make custom bumper bracket lowering thingys and then we'll stick the bumper back on so the brackets come from under the car. ALTHOUGH, I'm begining to really like this very smooth, no bumper look. Decisions, decisions http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow. Looks good Denise..
Funny about the weather comment....
I was in the garage all day today... sweating.
Welded the front forks for my new mini bike...
And I am peeling on my shoulders from the sunbun that I got at the round-up last Saturday...
I'm not much of a cold weather guy... Texas is too cold for me!

Keep on trucking...

I had the license plate bolted to one of the holes on the top edge where the ragtop meets the body at the trunk. Lasted for about 1 mile after I left FAB32's place today. Was making such a loud rattling noise in the wind I couldn't stand it. Took it off and ran thru the state without a license plate. How long do you think I can get away with it before I get pulled over?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just got off the phone with OUR Denise. I had to check in and see if she made it home alright. I'm glad this event took place and I wish EVERYONE on the HAMB could have participated. If you have never had the opportunity to observe a bunch of very different people from many different places get together for a one day happening with a common goal in mind you've really missed something. Quite a few of the participants had never met before Saturday and by 10:00 A.M. they were functioning like a well oiled machine.
Before Denise left her and I were reflecting on the weekend and spent some time discussing this amazing THING called the HAMB. We'll take the extremes in this case as an example. How would any two people, one from Missouri the other from Canada, ever cross paths let alone share the unique event of this weekend if it weren't for the HAMB? To resist the temptation to go "on and on" I'll simply say THANK YOU RYAN, you've created a wonderful monster.

This was an incredulous experience!

I am thrilled beyond words to have been a part of this(a very small part).

I was allowed to do a little sanding and paper work. And, I was allowed near the food.

Talk about a fabulous bunch of people, you have to include the folks from Michigan.

Fab32 is a great guy. To open his shop for an event like this, furnish tools, allow strangers to wander at will. And run his legs off getting tools, fabbing fillers for hole plugging, back and forth all day long.

All the HAMBers that showed up, went straight to work with out a Boss telling them what to do.

There were countless hours of work transforming Big Olds. If it was my car, I would be extremely grateful.
I know denise is. She is a great person, deserving no doubt. She is extremely fortunate to have such great friends.

Hatch actually worked. Not just a little, but all day. Which describes all of the folks showing up.
As everyone knows, this was Hatch's idea, a good one as it turns out.
Purplepickup spent all day working, knowing he would probably get sick from the paint fumes.

Kustombuilder spent all day hunched over surgically reconstructing the hood. I know his back had to be killing him.And Sirstude Boy stood there all day assisting him, handing him his torch, rod, doing what ever the job required.
So many folks(see group photo) in the room busy getting work done with out someone standing over them barking out orders? I am telling you this astonished me. Talent, you would not believe.

Lets not forget the ladys laboring over the hot grill to feed this bunch.I confess, there were cookies hijacked for the trip back to Mo. They did not make it all the way.

I just cannot begin to tell you all what you missed by not being there. I am still on a high this morning, a little tired from the ride, but still excited.

Thanks to everyone for letting me come to your party.
Just Steve, you would have been proud.

What goes around, comes around.
Never truer than here.

A gang of HAMB'rs doing what they do best to Big Olds.
Doesn't hurt that he's owned by the HAMB sweetheart either.
I think Big Olds is in for a long and interesting life.
How could he not be?

About that rear bumper decision . . . put one on.
Looks most cool without, but after a while the idjits in traffic who pull up too close will have you worried.
Not to mention that a small tap will do major damage.

One reason I put the gasser style bumper on the 32 and will put nerfs on the 31.
Not much protection - admitted - but every little bit helps.

If I remember right, the rear bumper on Big Olds has a license plate surround or at the least a bracket that could be styled to carry a license plate.

All in all, cool story about Denise, HAMB'rs and their ladies and best of all, an update on where Big Olds is going and where he's been.

Ain't life great? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I agree about the bumper; my first thought was: leave it off... looks cool without it. (my second thought was: damn, I missed cookies again) Then I thought about all of the miles she puts on him... needs a bumper.

Sorry I missed the fun, although, I sand against the grain... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

WOW!!! You people "Kicked Ass". It is simply amazing the kind of friendships this place we call the HAMB has spawned.
The dedication of all you people working togeather for a very special friend, and a very special car I might add.

It was unfortunate for me to have to choose between going to my sons wedding in Las Vegas that same weekend, or participating in a unbeliveable display of unselfish dedication from all the people involved. You people ROCK http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Brush, Have been away from the computer for a while. Regarding your offer for adoption, lets make some plans to get that done. You won't have to make your own bed just do some of your great artwork on the walls of my shop and you can have the run of the place. Make sure you come for the next work session or garage crawl and I'll have a wall all cleaned off for you and the adoption papers ready for you to sign. haha!!!

Denise, Thanks for reminding me about the cookies. I just went and got a few to eat as I type. There aren't but only a very few left so if you want to stay in my good graces you can fire up the stove again (just kidding). BTW the bread in the cookie container works great, they are still soft just like fresh baked.
